  1. I didn’t quite blow away driving into work today through the storm, but I was glad to have new windshield wipers.

  2. Pouring rain right now. It was foggy, too, this morning, but that’s dissipated.

  3. Things were hopping in Peoria Sunday as the Drake University Bulldogs visited a sold out Carver Arena to play the Bradley Braves for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
The teams have had a long standing sport’s rivalry. Both schools were founded in the 1800’s and this was the 161st time they played Basketball.
Great to see student athletes from schools that not only attracted students from the Midwest but also from across the country and around the world. Bradley had student athletes from the Netherlands and Finland on the court. Drake has been a highly regarded school since it’s founding in 1881.
Great game. A tough but solid win for the Illinois school.
The MVC Tournament for a NCAA spot is still up for grabs with 20 or more regular season game winners in the hunt including Southern Illinois.

  4. I guess I’m just going to have to hold my nose and pick a mayoral candidate.
Don’t really like any of them.

  5. Heard the Lviv (Ukraine) orchestra at Krannert last night. Great concert and I had forgotten how good that hall sounds. Lot of support shown for Ukraine. The orchestra is on a 36 city US tour. See them.

  6. lots of vallas signs on actual personal property, as opposed to the parkway, or the center strip down busy streets. i would say that the nw side is well lit up with vallas signs. it seems like no other candidate has the voter intensity that vallas voters have. while it seems unlikely, its not impossible for vallas to win in round 1 without a runoff. early vote totals in predominantly white wards is high, and low in predominantly hispanic wards. if it goes to a runoff, vallas wins going away.

  9. We’re on our 2nd “seek shelter” tornado warning of the morning here at the Big U, so we got that going for us.

  10. Days like today remind me how great implementing WFH has been. Sitting at my desk dry and cozy in sweats with a cup of drip coffee that probably cost me 20 cents to make, instead of slogging through the rain and getting a $3 cup from Dunkin on my way to the office.

  11. Hard rain, gray skies, heavy winds here… but my heart is lighter this morning.

You might remember I posted here recently about being victimized by an out-of-state cremation company from Florida, called Legacy/Heritage, that misrepresents itself as a local Illinois service. They basically “lost” my mom’s body for over two months, wouldn’t tell me where she was, and I was crippled in trying to handle mom’s estate and business affairs without her death certificate paperwork. Because they’re out-of-state and working via internet, they were in all kinds of legal trouble in Florida, but basically “untouchable” to Illinois agencies like Professional Regulation, SOS, and the A.G’s office. But I have to give a shout-out to Comptroller Mendoza’s people, who are fanatical as she is about constituent services, and have some dealings with the funeral business in Illinois. They listened to my hotline message, called me back same-day, and in just a couple of days, located my mom, broke the paperwork tangle, and today, I have my mom’s ashes, and can move forward with my duties of putting her to rest with dad, and settling her estate. The entire family has been on edge, grieving this whole time, and is now at peace.

Don’t tell me all state workers are lazy and uncaring, because I have seen and experienced their empathy, concern, and dedication first-hand. I feel proud and blessed we have such people working for us. If you meet one of them today, give them a fist bump for me.

  12. A big, bright yellow thing just appeared in the sky over Rogers Park following about six soaked hours.

    It’s gone now.

  13. Got a tornado alert on my phone, followed by the village siren about 3 minutes later. Nice to know that the powers that be are doing there best to warn me. Good news is no tornado appeared.

  17. Barabbas @ 11:03–So good to hear that the ordeal locating your mother’s remains is behind you. And good to hear about Mendoza’s people. When you lead with energy and compassion, it is bound to spread throughout your department.
