Chicago mayor candidate Brandon Johnson @Brandon4Chicago was endorsed by 49th Ward Ald. Maria Hadden @Mariafor49. I count 29 aldermen endorsing for #chimayor23. Lori Lightfoot has 8 endorsements, Johnson has 8, Chuy Garcia has 5, & Paul Vallas has 4. #twill pic.twitter.com/zHqRYT7xYH

"You can tell that he’s the child of a pastor. Very good at convincing people he’s on your side."

This is at least the second time this reference has been made. My father was a pastor. My late mother was a pastor. Why does Lori Lightfoot insist on using this as a weapon? https://t.co/rKx7K2ABNe

First time I’ve seen this - Twitter account pops up, tweets a video of a political candidate (Paul Vallas) saying something with what seems like a fake, AI generated voice

The fake was sniffed out quickly in the replies, and then the account + tweet were promptly deleted pic.twitter.com/mRjjuVvQGo

  1. Frank Calabrese’s map: not at all surprised to see Vallas doing so well up in the Norwood Park area.

    Comment by Lynn S. Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 8:19 am

  2. The Vallas/Twitter thing is an awful example of how not to approach any social media.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it always… more campaigns have been embarrassed or ruined by social media then have been helped by it.

If this is the taste of Crisis Management to expect from Vallas as a Mayor, and given the subject, at least be quicker and decisive, not slowly shifting shenanigans

Oh, and Vallas Crew… Never go full “Patsy/Victim”, what will the FOP say?

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 8:33 am

  3. After next Friday when the votes are tabulated and hopefully a new president of the FOP is elected this once respected fraternal organization can regain its footing.

  4. == hopefully a new president of the FOP is elected ==

I’m hoping too, but not optimistic. Don’t forget, retired cops get to vote and they usually cast more ballots than the on-duty officers. They love watching the Cantazara clown show from their condos on the gulf coast of Florida and don’t care that he can’t get anything done in Springfield or City Hall.

    Comment by Tony T. Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 9:26 am

  5. lots of vallas signs on actual personal property, as opposed to the parkway, or the center strip down busy streets. i would say that the nw side is well lit up with vallas signs. it seems like no other candidate has the voter intensity that vallas voters have. while it seems unlikely, its not impossible for vallas to win in round 1 without a runoff. early vote totals in predominantly white wards is high, and low in predominantly hispanic wards. if it goes to a runoff, vallas wins going away.

  6. “I was hacked” = “the dog ate my homework.”

Comment by Big Dipper Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 9:54 am

  7. Tony T you are correct and I wish they would wake up and realize the the FOP brand is so damaged that nobody in Springfield or City hall wants anything to do with them. It is in the best interests of all members active and retired to realize that despite political disagreements the lines of communication have to remain open. Just the fact that the president recruited and gave 100,000 dollars to a candidate that did not have a remote chance of winning to run against the Senator who is the chairman of the pension committee is one of many examples of the foolishness that has gone on for the last three years. The fact that retired members get to vote in FOP as well as Local 2 elections is ludicrous but that is a subject for another day. I am confident better days are ahead.

  8. I’m serious about calling dibs on one of the 47th Ward Chuy Garcia shamrocks sign (banned punctuation). I chuckle every time I see one, definitely going into the collection.

Saw my first Lightfoot yard sign in 32nd/44th (Lakeview) area over weekend. Meanwhile Rod Sawyer’s got a weirdly effective sign team that has dozens out around there.

Comment by ChicagoBars Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 10:24 am

  9. I think there is going to be a lot of anti-incumbent sentiment in Chicago. Vallas may ride that into office. There are a lot of problems and stuff floating around with the candidates, but brass tacks voters aren’t getting the same level of services from the government as before.

Comment by Three Dimensional Checkers Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 10:29 am

  10. That MacGarcia sign is pretty cool.

  13. Not a Chicago voter but a consumer of Chicago television commercials, and yesterday I was thinking “Thank goodness this is almost over”.

Then I remembered they will having a runoff….

  14. ==After next Friday when the votes are tabulated and hopefully a new president of the FOP is elected this once respected fraternal organization can regain its footing.==

There’s always a bigger kook waiting in the wings to replace the current one when it comes to present-day right-wing politics.

Comment by Roadrager Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 12:23 pm

  15. The Chuy Garcia shamrock campaign signs were used in his 2015 mayoral campaign against Rahm Emanuel.

  17. I bet we get some crazy picks for the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability. People have not done enough to educate voters on this board, and if you don’t educate voters they just make crazy decisions like whose last name sounds the best.

Comment by Three Dimensional Checkers Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 3:34 pm

  18. -if it goes to a runoff, vallas wins going away-

I doubt that. Seems to me that he will about have maxed out his support this time around. Who joins a coalition with him and the likes of the current right wing FOP? Not a lot of liberals, or diverse voters, or the CTU and their supporters.

  19. ===-if it goes to a runoff, vallas wins going away-

    That’s the thing, ain’t it?

Vallas, FOP, angry old white folks, in a one-on-one race…

Vallas can break out and get to a runoff… but which of the other “7” (or 2-3 actual candidates with measurable, but uncontrolled bases) helps Vallas?

I have no idea what tomorrow brings.

I learned my lesson with Lightfoot last time in a crowded field.

Anyone who tells you with “strong certainty” how it’s going down is just playing a speculative game.

    Why?

There’s 177,000+ votes already cast. Not many, if any, of these 9 are driving or turning out pluses in that 177,000+ where it’s a controlled voting mechanism of GOTV.

    It’ll be really interesting tomorrow.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 4:10 pm

  20. ==Who joins a coalition with him==

Yup it’s like primaries now, where the passionate extreme core can get you through but that same extremism dooms you in the general.

Comment by Big Dipper Monday, Feb 27, 23 @ 4:10 pm

  21. 3 predictions:

    1) Paul Vallas is going to become the next mayor of Chicago
    2) Lightfoot is not making the runoff
    3) Lamont Robinson will be elected as the new 4th Ward Alderman tomorrow
