Bost’s mail-in ballot lawsuit delayed until December

A potential cloud over vote counting in Illinois’ election was lifted late Monday when a federal judge put off until December arguments over the validity of mail-in ballots postmarked on or before Election Day but received by election authorities within two weeks afterward.

U.S. District Judge John Kness set Dec. 5 for oral arguments over a motion to dismiss the suit, which was filed in May in U.S. District Court in Chicago by a downstate Republican congressman and two GOP officials. The timing of the argument is too late to affect the Nov. 8 general election’s vote count.

An adverse ruling on Election Day could have invalidated potentially tens of thousands of mailed general election ballots that are cast by Illinois voters, including military members serving overseas, and postmarked on or before this coming Election Day but received by election authorities afterward.

The lawsuit, led by four-term U.S. Rep. Mike Bost of Murphysboro, echoed former President Donald Trump’s rejected court challenges in other states in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election that he falsely contends was stolen.

  1. See, this is what happens when federal judges are beholden to Mike Madigan.

  2. Seems like Bost is trying hard to show how Trumpy he is to fend off a primary challenge by Darren in the next election.

  3. Ah yes, the Republican party, all about free and fair elections. Not!

  5. Sad to see Bost turn this direction more and more. It doesn’t given the electorate much of a reason to vote for someone capable of upholding a Congressional oath and Darren Bailey.

  6. I wonder what Mike Bost has against letting the ballots of US Service members stationed abroad be counted.

  7. US District Court Judge, John Kness, is a Trump appointee!

Yes. I meant to update it Sunday and forgot. Then meant to do it yesterday after hours and forgot.

    Sigh.

  9. Going full Trump is the saddest demise of arguably *one* of my favorite (former favorite) legislators… and that’s before the Bost Toss which made me re-examine his status for me.

It’s weird, no? It’s weird that the more odd and more “Un-Bost” Bost became, the further his career kept going… without *any* thought to the devolution.

Now trying to stop likely military ballots?

    Yeah, it’s a full devolution.

It should be standard time, I think you meant DST.

  11. Illinois VBM ballots must be received within 14 days of the election if postmarked on or before Election Day. Most states have a deadline of election day some are 6 or 10 ( Utah has a range of 6-14)…

  13. What does Mike Bost have against voting?

  14. For those who are surprised by his actions, don’t be.

Bost has never been a candidate who had anywhere close to any platform. Keeping a well-wetted finger to the wind.

While that does not make him unique as a politician, there is a reason he was known as Representative Present to those of us in his district when he was in the G.A.

As I’ve commented many times, why Il Dems gave him so many passes in the 90’s and early aughts, I’ll never know. Now, it’s too late. His family won’t let him near any of the family businesses. He’s got a job for life.

  15. Bost has been the most ineffective legislator in both the Illinois and U.S. Houses of decades now. His agenda is re-elect Mike Bost.
