  1. Justin Fields approaching super stardom. Refs took over game though at Soldier Field. Whatever, better draft position for Bears.

  2. I’m ready for Wednesday and a breather from the ads before we get innundated again with all the stuff for the local races next spring.

Now that Election Day is becoming a holiday for more folks in addition to state employees, I’m wondering if we should consider changing tradition and move Election Day to the Monday following the first Sunday in November. Meaning a Monday Election Day holiday.

  3. === I’m wondering if we should consider changing tradition and move Election Day to the Monday following the first Sunday in November. Meaning a Monday Election Day holiday.===

You expect folks, with the possibly of a three day weekend, to vote?

Explain how Election Day would change from “the first Tuesday following a Monday in November”

    How would one change this?

  4. Re moving Election Day, I assume they would be worried voters would go out of town for the three-day weekend.

Comment by Big Dipper Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:12 am

  5. Making Election Day a holiday is a joke. It’s only a state worker holiday because the unions wanted to get another day off under the guise of democracy. You can early vote for weeks, and vote by mail anytime, and polls are open 6 am to 7 pm on Election Day itself. Explain to me again why we should give state workers the whole day off?

  6. ==It’s only a state worker holiday because the unions wanted to get another day off under the guise of democracy.==

I wonder if there’s been pushes in the past to get state workers Primary Day off? As well as Local Election days? Either by union proposals or possible legislation, even in recent years. Not supporting this but makes me wonder.

Comment by Stuck in Celliniland Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:23 am

  7. We got rid of cable tv back in 2020 and I have not seen a single broadcast or cable ad on television this entire election season.

    We are not alone.

A survey last month found that 1/3 US households rely solely on streaming services. With 85% of households subscribing to atleast one streaming service, the influence of broadcast and cable ads will continue to wane.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:24 am

  8. === Explain to me again why we should give state workers the whole day off?===

It should be a national holiday.

    Anything else?

Deep breaths, the unions aren’t after you.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:28 am

  9. Bears offense looking better and better. I look forward to when they get a few more linemen who can actually block straight up so he doesn’t need to rely on the run so much.

I have a couple of friends complaining about the D though. That’s not what’s going on right now. It’s all about QB development and shootouts are okay for that!

    Comment by ddp76 Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:32 am

  10. As fun as it is to watch Fields run they need to find a way to keep him in the pocket more for his health. At least the Bears are interesting, and for the first time I can remember the offense outshines the D. They have some holes to plug but with their first rounder, $100mm in cap space, and a smart GM they should contend for the division next year.

Comment by Independent Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:37 am

  11. All you Bears fans ought to try being a Hokie fan. My alma mater has apparently quit recruiting after Frqnk Beamer and Bud Foster retired.

But I am still a fan to the end, just like you Bears folks.

    Comment by H-W Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:42 am

  12. @save democracy. Gee, that’s just awful that the state of Illinois encourages its employees to go and vote by giving them a day off to do so. Like OW said, it should be a national holiday. I gather from your handle that you would prefer only certain members of American society to vote: land-owning white men.

Comment by Steve Rogers Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:47 am

  13. **It’s only a state worker holiday because the unions wanted to get another day off under the guise of democracy.**

This is totally false, but feel free to not let facts get in the way of your anti-union narrative.

  14. Welp, after the Midnight Rain of tears fall, a campaign season ends when the clock strikes… “Tuesday”… tomorrow, election day voting will begin. You don’t have to be a campaign Mastermind to realize how important early voting is and was so unless your campaign was run by a Maroon, you should have a great many pluses in the bag. Election day turnout is going to big a huge factor in so many races under the radar.

Campaign season is my favorite, and sure, legislative session is fine, and important, but I find campaign season puts me in a Lavender Haze, as ads whisper Sweet Nothing to me about things like jobs, crime, education, and Illinois has had so many ads this season, folks with ads that seem like some “Vigilante &#$@“, but I have faith in our democracy.

This midterm is seen at The Great War, some say it’s Bigger Than the Whole Sky, with those same ads in High Fidelity hitting us on all the platforms. I won’t miss the ads, but I’ll miss Mr. Bigger, who is a true superstar.

Come Wednesday, there’s gonna be so much Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve, some will say Karma will find it’s victims, some crazy results that will seem as crazy as Snow on the Beach. That’s democracy, and Illinois voters will have their voice heard where they want Illinois to be going.

Others that win? Some ran as an Anti-Hero, now they’ll have to maneuver the Labyrinth of actual governing, so different than just being a candidate. You think “you know it all”, we’ll, you’ll find that You’re on Your Own, Kid, with few friends and allies acting so off putting, and that Bejeweled campaign jean jacket, leave it at home.

Here’s hoping Tuesday goes off without a Glitch… in Chicago, Oswego… even Paris, Illinois. As a Dear Reader of this blog, so much will be hashed out Tuesday. We’ll have answers, but what will be the Question…?

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 9:58 am

  15. Like Yellow Dog said more peope are relying on streaming now. And with the current movement of a lot of folk to decentralized social media, which also does not tend to allow advertising, twitter/facebook ads and the social effect of Twitter/Facebook will not be as large either.
Maybe radio ads (commuters) and meeting people at El/metro stops will be the new methods.

  16. Still kinda bummed that “The Justin Fields Game” was not a win for the Bears. At least the Packers keep losing.

Illini stubbed their toe on Saturday but still control their fate in the Big Ten West the rest of the way. Just got to get the job done against Purdue and Northwestern.

  17. ===It’s only a state worker holiday because the unions wanted to get another day off under the guise of democracy.===

    Bruce, is that you?

It was a state holiday before AFSCME was big enough to endorse Thompson. Started under JRT, and the “old-timers” (Stratton era) said the expectation was that state employees would work in the polls / help their party get out the vote.

  18. Anyone Remember,

That’s what I was thinking too. Plus the network effects. So if all the people you would have collaborated with are off doing poll work (on their vac time), election judging, etc. Then you may as well not come in, too.

  19. Went to a show at the casino in New Buffalo over the weekend, and you could tell they gave tickets to their heavy slot players.

My AARP member self was one of the younger folks.

  20. The Bears aren’t going anywhere fast, but the Packers are going backwards. It’s like winning the Super Bowl down here south of the Mars Cheese Castle curtain.

Wished “The Grobber” were still with us, he’d be enjoying this.

Comment by Jerry Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 12:28 pm

  21. I’m so sick of opening my email account, surfing anywhere on line and certainly cable and the tv on the porch just plugged into the electric outlet. sooooo many ads. especially hate the ones that almost proclaim some candidate has “died.” but with the used car salesman about to become the Speaker of the House, it’s only going to get worse except it won’t be about an election.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 12:49 pm

  22. Bears game: Can someone explain to the officials what pass interference is, and when it should or shouldn’t be called? Yes on Justin Fields as well; Bears in a rebuild, people. Could be worse, we could be Green Bay.

Election Day can’t come soon enough, as the Final Ad Blitzkreig rolls across all forms of mass media. Please recycle campaign advertising materials when and where possible after the election.

  23. I had a fun morning going through various bar association evaluations trying to decide which judges to vote for/against.

There are 54 judges up for retention, not to mention a dozen running unopposed for vacancies.

I’m going to be in the voting booth for a while.

  24. Rep Foster field organizer Kyle Schoen ticketed for damaging property of Naperville Central Swim team athletes while chasing after them with what appears to be a weapon on Friday night during team spirit night activities.

  25. Who will be the first declared winner in Illinois? I’m guessing Mendoza will not take longer than 2 minutes past polls closing.

Comment by Lurker Monday, Nov 7, 22 @ 1:50 pm

  26. Last min national congress and governor campaign stops sound bites/comments like This will be the last democratic election of our time (if my side loses) are over the top. Once the sky falls on Tuesday (for either side) I will have to get up and go to work Wednesday Anyone else not worried about the sky falling and the end of days?
