Did you know Darren Bailey runs a school? And they use quite the curriculum.
Lessons like:
Women in the workforce have been harmful to America.
Evolution isn’t real.
Dinosaurs and humans were definitely on Earth at the same time.
Gay people have no more claims to special rights than child molesters or rapists.
The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well.Class dismissed. Darren Bailey is too extreme for Illinois.

The year before he ran for a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives, Bailey and his wife Cindy launched a fundamentalist Christian school based in Louisville, Illinois, in 2016. In that same year, Bob Jones University Press was once again in the process of rewriting its history books to soften or remove some of the more dubious or offensive claims found in its pages. The BJU Press altered its textbooks on several occasions in recent years to remove racially charged content that sometimes spoke about slave owners or the Ku Klux Klan in forgiving terms.
BJU publishers shipped history books to Christian classrooms in the early 1990s that claimed, “The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well.” That line was published in BJU’s second edition textbooks long before Bailey founded Full Armor Christian Academy in 2016.
In its third edition, Bob Jones University Press authors highlighted the Ku Klux Klan’s affinity with strict Christian morals, writing in 2001 that the KKK “tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross. Klan targets were bootleggers, wife-beaters, and immoral movies. In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians.” […]
5 On Your Side obtained hard copies of several of the textbooks on the shelves at Full Armor Academy. While the racially charged language is more subtle than previous editions, it is still present.
For example, textbooks on the shelves at Bailey’s school now teach students that “God regulated but did not forbid slavery.” Teachers are instructed to ask students to compare outlawing abortion to ending slavery, and to ask students to explain the strengths of the Three-Fifths Compromise, the part of the U.S. Constitution that counted slaves as three-fifths of a person. “I think you can see that Darren Bailey would be bad for schools in the state of Illinois,” Pritzker said during a campaign stop in East St. Louis. “Darren Bailey wants to put forward things that I think are ancient ideas, racist ideas. These are ideas that are bad for women, bad for people of color. He’s living in another century.”

No wonder they are against any teachings that discuss racial inequality in America. They support counting African-Americans as 3/5ths of a person.

This is why Mark Maxwell will continue to thrive in his career. To the post, DB, while in his own mind may believe he’s striving for great things, is plain disgusting. Why? Because he will never budge on his really toxic beliefs. There’s no softening and compromising his views. He’s a fundamentalist and politics is not the place for this kind of guy.

To be fair, from a position of biblical inerrancy, the quotation is accurate. While I feel that unfortunately allows Christians to excuse major injustice tied to their religion, the faith of their ancestors believed God approved of slavery in some forms and even commanded his followers to take others as slaves at times in the Old Testament.

Religious phonies are the ones who claim to follow Jesus but cite the Old Testament for bigotry, hatred, anti-woman, physical and psychological abuses… and think all that bad is “allowed” in Jesus’ name.
These are the Pharisees that we are warned about. Bailey is a man that arguably would be a poster child who claims to be a child of God what only if all Bailey’s biases in race, gender, or equality can be justified under a pretend following of Jesus.
It makes me ill.

Not defending Bailey’s school curriculum – but the 3/5 compromise is often misunderstood. While of course, the idea of counting someone as a partial person is offensive. In the context of needing to find support for a new constitution, and in light of the great debate that was raging around slavery – it can be seen as an enlighted compromise that envisioned a day when slavery would be banned. Without the 3/5 compromise, slaveholding states would have counted slaves when it came to apportioning representatives to Congress, meaning that those states would thus be perpetually overrepresented in national politics. Absent the 3/5 compromise southern states would have been able to stifle all abolitionist proposals coming out of Congress.

The United Colonies declared independence to be the United States under a compromise that slavery was not be seen/written as vile in the Declaration.
The point?
Even our founding was based on a bold hypocrisy that the signers couldn’t square as “acceptable”.
It’s not enlightened, it’s ruinous.
Slavery and any appeasement towards it has never been an acceptable compromise to an American Experiment, it’s been what’s held us back, even *today* from living the words Thomas Jefferson, a slave owner, wrote.

There’s no way to escape what is contained in the bible.
It’s unfortunate so many people decided to attach themselves to it and go all in on it before fully reading it.
I thank my 8 years in a catholic school, and 5 as an altar boy, for ‘punishing me’ when I asked too many secular questions by making me read the entire thing.
Slavery is the tame stuff. Discussions about many other parts of the bible would get an adult sexual/violence/graphical content warning on most social media sites, and not in the good way.

I saw a cross burning ceremony in the mid-1960s, in Southside Virginia. They were not talking about the above issues. It was pretty much about what we might today call wicked liberals and the belief that liberals were destroying America. It was also about all the African Americans in Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Suffolk Virginia, and how Black folks were viewed as problematic.
I do not recall anything about immoral movies or bootleggers coming up.

I think what the commenter may have been trying to say was that comparing American chattel slavery to ancient slavery is apples to oranges.
American slavery was birth to death, generational and race-based. Universities in the American South taught courses in slave husbandry. Entire industries were created to raise and sell human beings. The list of horrific atrocities connected to American slavery is endless.
Ancient, biblical-style slavery was horrible, but neither permanent nor generational. It was significantly different.
American-style slavery was an absolute abomination for which there can be no historical excuse. And yet, people like Bailey persist. It’s just one reason why people like Bailey don’t want accurate, factual history taught in schools, if they’re even aware of the facts, which they may not be due to their subpar schooling combined with their often willful lack of curiosity, or worse.

Amalia, I have family members involved in this type of nonsense. The attraction is it allows those who follow this to claim moral authority over others and believe everyone except those who worship like them are dammed to hell.
There is no room for other views, other beliefs or other thoughts. They even split among themselves over who is most pure in their doctrine.
On the slavery issue, the Southern Baptist Churches became their own branch when the southern churches refused to side with anti slavery views.
The anti slavery Baptist became what is now “The American Baptist Church” which are progressive Baptist. Jim Edgar was a member of Springfield’s American Baptist Church, Central Baptist Church.

There are no such things for 8 year olds. The material that has some cartoon drawings that are explicit are in high school libraries. They aren’t particularly prurient though so it’s hard to call them porn.

As a Christian myself, I am baffled about the Right’s obsession with so-called Critical Race Theory.
Jesus commanded his followers to confess their sins to God, no matter how uncomfortable or humiliating that might be, and ask forgiveness.
Hiding or denying the ills of slavery and racism contradicts that. No white people alive today owned slaves, but to defend the KKK is inexcusable.
How do people get so off track?

Spot on. I studied history in college and have been an avid history buff my entire life. I guess what is so surprising to me is that there are people (Bob Jones, Bailey, etc) that would disagree with this. Thomas Jefferson did some great things for this country but he was an incredible hypocrite. Many (most?) of the Founding Fathers were too. The whole thing of trying to parse slavery to me is just shocking.

Are you just learning American history for the first time? They did that *with* the 3/5ths compromise, dude. The Southern states absolutely scuttled any abolitionist talk in Congress, going so far as to even turn *Ben Franklin* away. There’s a reason we had to fight the Civil War to end slavery.

The northern states would never have accepted that solution, so the union would not have been formed. Which given the stain of slavery (and Jim Crow and…) on this land will never be able to be overcome. Lincoln laid the story out in his 2nd Inaugural Address. He referred to the war and I would generalize to the entirety of the nation’s history.

What type of school fails to teach critical thinking skills, logic, and analysis? Darren Bailey’s Full Armor Christian Academy.
Wacky curriculum that is based on religious overtones not connected to sound educational principles has no place in a school setting.
Does the library at FACA have a collection of the Caldecott and Newbery books for students? Does the library at FACA have a collection from the Great Books program? The GB Foundation advances critical, reflective thinking and social and civic engagement through literature.
Is Darren Bailey guilty of educational neglect as he infuses the students with tripe and nonsense?

My wife went to Bob Jones in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The stories of the mental and emotional abuse the students suffered at the hands of the school it is a wonder she was able to leave reasonably sane. She dropped out after we met on a blind date.

… and yet Jesus (New Testament) made clear all are equal, our sins are forgiven, we are all children of God.

Defending the 3/5ths Compromise as “the best that we could do” ignores the fact these decisions were made by rich white land owners. Rich white landowners decided treating some people as less than people was worth it in order to make more money living in an independent country.

American chattel slavery was uniquely cruel, both in context of historical examples of slavery that KKK-types like to point to as “fair” — particularly Roman slavery and Biblical slavery, as Rich covered above. But also in the context of European serfdom, where serfs were more or less as immiserated as slaves, BUT they had rights against the lord and they *could not be sold off the land*. They didn’t belong to the lord; they belonged to the land.
The whole reason we have to specify that American slavery was “chattel” slavery is that European systems of serfdom and indentured servitude of the era/just before the Atlantic slave trade came with rules and rights for the serfs/servants. Slavery turned human being from people with rights into chattel — movable property that could be freely bought and sold.
American slavery was a uniquely totalizing process of treating humans literally as livestock — as chattels — as moveable property. And unlike most ancient systems of slavery, it was not possible for American slaves ever to become citizens or freemen. They were literally turned from people into things under the law, which is a world-historical horror on par with the Holocaust. Like it really was an innovation in human cruelty, and we can never, ever allow people to minimize the Atlantic slave trade, and in particularly the US’s participation in it, by pointing to Roman slavery or Biblical slavery or European serfs and saying, “see, people understand THAT’S not so bad, it’s just that they hate the United States/the South/whatever that makes them say American slavery was really, really bad.”
No. American chattel slavery was world-historically, innovatively immoral and cruel, and anyone defending any part of the American system of slavery (including claiming that some slaveowners treated their slaves “well”) is defending treating human beings as objects and things, no different from sheep or clocks, under the law. That cannot be okay.

No. As a history major who taught US history and government and studied these issues extensively,I have never heard a single historian posit that the 3/5ths compromise or the issues that arose as a result were enlightened. Not one.
It took me awhile to get calm after reading the post. As an educator it is beyond offensive to listen to bailey and his ilk complain about “indoctrination” when that is obviously all that they want to achieve.
No serious educator uses or gives and credence to Bob Jones U.
I am now waiting to hear baile, thomas,and trussel speak to these issues.
My guess is that they won’t because that is what pritzker wants them to do

You probably mean serious historian, but many of the history texts in the South argued exactly this along with a number of other awful things (and may still be doing it in some places)

Watch where you’re stepping. There are a lot of rabbit holes in this post. Rather than going into which bad is worse, I believe we should be focused on improving everyone’s lot in life. Clearly, that’s not Bailey’s belief nor that of the MAGA GOP.
To the post, JS Mill hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that this is all about indoctrinating folks to accept without question MAGA GOP philosophy.

While Bailey is the issue at hand, it makes me concerned about the broader issue as well. What sort of oversight is in place for what is taught at religious schools? It’s one thing to do Sunday school but if a school is handing out a high school diploma I would hope there would be safeguards in place to keep them from going totally wackadoo.

So let us add another twist to this story. It has been reported that Virtue House Ministries/Full Armor Christian Academy and run by Cindy Bailey received $569,045 in PPP funds in 2020-21.
One can make the case that private, parochial or charter schools can devise and control their own curriculum. In this scenario they can be as unorthodox and contrarian as they choose to be so long as they maintain some semblance of being an alternative to the public school system. But for the taxpayers to subsidize such outrageous teachings to the tune of over a half million dollars does not seem equitable,

I’m WAY more concerned about the device in my kids’ hand 24 hours day than I am any book in a public school. But reading this story, I’m equally worried about that device and the books that are in private schools.

In all you spamming, they read as though the Pritzker family, including Jennifer Pritzker, a Republican, may have… they say may… been one thing or another to have talk, but like your spamming, not much else.
