  1. Illinois, surrounded by successful states , maybe we could learn something?

    Comment by Early Wynn Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:15 am

  2. Great series between the Cubs and Cards. Two nail-biters, and two beat downs. Two wins each. I just love this series every year.

    Should we adopt Indiana’s county level income tax, Kentucky’s city level income tax, or one of the progressive income tax structures from Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa?

    Comment by vern Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:22 am

  4. I guess I would need Early’s definition of “successful”…

    Comment by Vote Quimby Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:24 am

  5. ===maybe we could learn something?===

    Perhaps repeal the constitutional prohibition on local government personal property taxes on vehicles, so Illinois can follow the “example” of Kentucky & Missouri?

    Comment by Anyone Remember Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:25 am

  6. Anyone ready for some high school football?

    Indiana’s new abortion law requiring a child victim of rape and/or incest to carry a pregnancy to term kind of learning?

  8. On NHL network right now, Team USA women’s world hockey championship first game. South Suburban native Kendall Coyne Schofield is captain again, tiny fast player. Way up on Japan and very fun watch. Kendall’s husband now plays for the Bears.

  10. ===maybe we could learn something?===

    Which of those states have the 3rd largest city in America, the economic engine of the Midwest region, a global city recognized by companies relocating and tourist as a top place…

    Oh, yeah… it’s Illinois

    Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:31 am

  11. Still pondering the mysteries of the White Sox. In 2 games vs Baltimore they had 23 hits, scored 8 runs and left 27 runners on base. 1 win and 1 loss. They are leading the league in singles.

    Someone needs to let them know it’s still legal to hit home 4uns…

    Comment by Friendly Bob Adams Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:34 am

  12. Maybe if - Early Wynn - is still here… *they* are a slow learner themselves, staying here with all that good elsewhere?

    Why would Illinois like to be any state that does not reflect being both a recognized urban jewel AND an agricultural world giant

    I mean… “Indiana”… seriously? “Iowa”?

    Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:35 am

  13. ==Illinois, surrounded by successful states==

    We are a successful state ourselves.

    Maybe they should learn something from us.

    Comment by Arsenal Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:36 am

  14. Would that success be like Indiana where politicians and pundits worry about a “race to the bottom” with jobs and wages. Decatur had the highest levels of concentrated poverty in Illinois yet most of the cities close to where my daughter goes to school in Indiana have higher poverty rates than we do. M up nc in engas a higher poverty rate and it has Ball State. Usually university towns have a buffer Decatur doesn’t but outside of where Purdue and Indiana U, that does not appear to be the case in Indiana. Is that the “success” we are supposed to emulate?

    Comment by DTownResident Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:42 am

  15. This is a straight no-snark request: Does anyone have a link to a good, unbiased synopsis of the pros and cons of the new no-cash-bail policy law?

    This is an issue that I truly do not care about, but I had lunch with mom yesterday and she asked. TIA.

    Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:45 am

  16. ==Illinois, surrounded by successful states==

    25% of Missouri schools can only hold classes 4 days a week, so if you want someone to learn something, I got bad news for you.

    Comment by Arsenal Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:46 am

  17. Early Wynn, ask the residents of eastern Kentucky how “successful” they feel right now.

    Travel the bootheel of Missouri and simply marvel at all the “success” down there.

    Keep them “idears” coming, Copernicus.

  19. MLB announces all 30 teams play each other next year. How does it help the team like the 47-77 Pirates when they play the 46-79 Athletics ? League and division games are more important. MLB come on please try to make it easier to be a fan. Cards @ Cubs rubber game of a 5 set should be a fun watch 1:20 start.

  23. ===got what he/she wanted===

    They baited a way to look not only foolish but also wholly ignorant?

    When has a self-own been a winning thing?

    To the post,

    The White Sox are a head scratcher. The ball club is no where near where the club should’ve been, on paper this club should be far more productive, and there’s a lack of leadership…

    Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 9:58 am

  24. @Early Wynn, perhaps if we didn’t elect a governor who purposefully shut down state government for two years, we’d be in much better shape today.

    Sure you can argue (and I won’t disagree) that problems began long before that, but Rauner massively exacerbated the problem.

    Comment by Steve Rogers Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 10:11 am

  25. You wonder if the White Sox had decided to cut ties with LaRussa when it was clear the team was under-achieving if it would have provided a spark? I would hope that by know Reinsdorf would have appeased any guilt he had over letting Tony go in his prime. Clearly something needs to be done to inject some life into this team. And it seems that it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable decision will be made to bring in a new skipper.

  32. =Let’s talk about how CPS and its cohort have failed these kids=

    To suggest the struggles of children living in the poor areas of Chicago have been failed by teachers, is just an oversimplification of the problem. Indeed, it is false of several levels.

    Children struggle in schools in rural Illinois too. Our rural schools are struggling due to inadequate funding, not because local teachers are unionized (or not). Poor communities produce poor outcomes because of poverty, not because of unions. Children who grow up in poverty are born with just as much hope and just as many dreams as those in wealthy and successful suburbs. But as Jonathan Kozol and Alex Kotlowitz have well documented, after a short lifetime (12 years?) of having to observe adults fail due to inadequate labor market opportunities and underfunded schools, these children’s aspirations wane. The teachers are not the cause of the maldistribution of good jobs and opportunities for success. It is much more complicated, and just foolishness to assert that the whole problem of inadequate schooling in America is the result of teachers.

  33. We can ask or wonder how the change of political environment toward Democrats, since Roe was overturned, will impact Illinois. This might not be the traditional red wave in midterms.

  36. === Well I got everyone riled up ===

    That would be one way of putting it, I guess. A couple people mildly teased you for a relatively low-effort comment, and a couple others responded to the substance. Anyone Remember and I suggested some tax policies, OW asked if you meant abortion, and Vote Quimby asked for a reasonable clarification.

    You could have engaged with any of those and had an interesting conversation. We all could have learned something from each other and had a pleasant time on the Internet. Instead you declared victory because you got roasted, offered some irrelevant biographical details, and changed the subject.

    I’m genuinely curious: what was your goal here?

    Comment by vern Thursday, Aug 25, 22 @ 12:05 pm

  37. Zero goal other then to see things get better for kids in CPS schools. W/O that not much good can happen .

  38. Just what downtown Springfield needs. Road closures this weekend for the umpteenth street festival this year:
