Oppo dump!

* From a Chicago Tribune editorial board endorsement

Brett Nicklaus, a certified financial planner from Dixon, and incumbent Win Stoller, who lives in Germantown Hills, go head to head in the Republican primary for this newly redrawn district, for which no Democratic candidate has been slated. The 37th District now includes parts of DeKalb, Whiteside, Ogle and Lee counties. […]

Stoller, a CPA with an accounting degree and a former auditor with Price Waterhouse, points to his financial acumen as a way to put the state on a more solid financial track, even in times when federal money is not there to help. He said he does not intend to campaign negatively. And he told us he intends to “work both sides of the aisle, in a bipartisan way, to get things done and help small businesses.”

Taking him at his word on that, and noting his broad experience, Stoller has our endorsement.

Maybe the Tribune shouldn’t have taken him at his word. He definitely has a huge amount of quite impressive experience, but Sen. Stoller’s CPA license expired 13 years ago.

And I’m thinking this may not have been a misquote or misunderstanding. Sen. Stoller has claimed more than once that he is a CPA.

Oops again!

  2. Once a CPA, always a CPA?

  3. Anyone who is a CPA knows that it is a clear ethical violation to make Stoller’s claim if your license is expired. It’s not something that you inadvertently allow to lapse, especially for years. Not exactly at the Jesse Sullivan stolen valor level, but far more than an innocent misrepresentation.

  4. Maybe he can sue to get his name changed to Win Stoller, CPA.

  5. “Taking him at his word on that”

Why do they even call themselves a newspaper at this point? I get this is an editorial, but that doesn’t put their editorial views in a good light for literally anything the editorial board says in the future.

  6. Stoller participated in a candidate event in Henry County on 6/9/22 and in his own remarks he stated he was a CPA. I believe someone videoed his remarks. It’s time for all candidates to be honest with their remarks at all times.

  7. The Trib doesn’t have the resources or manpower to write informed and responsible editorials (other than about the city’s theater scene) - this is just further evidence of a now twenty year decline.

“Mr. DeMille, we’re ready for our close up” they cried from their printing plant HQ, soon to be a casino.

  8. Maybe he can start all his floor speeches - as a former federal CPA.
Been missing that in the chamber

  9. Note to self. If I advertise myself as a licensed professional, insure that my license is up to date!

  10. I’m sure his license renewal is simply hung up somewhere in the space-time continuum.

  11. ===Anyone who is a CPA knows that it is a clear ethical violation to make Stoller’s claim if your license is expired.===

I think this would make him a Rand Paul Republican since Rand Paul has made it acceptable to falsely state your credentials for years in public and private practice when he falsely asserted that he was a board certified ophthalmologist when the “board” that “certified” him was not a legally recognized entity to be either a medical board or to provide a medical certification.

Take from it what you will, but the GOP certainly doesn’t seem concerned with personal or professional ethics when it comes to lying to the public about their qualifications.

  12. What’s so silly about this is that there is an easy way that the organization says this should be reflected. If he were to simply list “CPA (inactive)” no one would bat an eye. There’s nothing to be gained by not doing this. And like Sullivan when a candidate decides to play fast and loose with things like this it does make you wonder if there’s something else going on.

  13. The Theater Critic don’t need to check no facts!

If the performance is convincing, you get a positive review!!

  14. Why is honesty about something like this so hard for politicians?? The word “former” is your friend, unless you were a “former inmate”, than maybe not so much. At this point we need the term “stolen professional valor” for this guy.

  16. Sports Stooge - Yeah we knew that about Sen Paul.
Please notice that Candy Dogood above did not claim he had lost his license.

  17. I believe Candy was referring to, in part, the license Paul obtained from the “National Board of Ophthalmologists” a board created and run by none other than Rand Paul.

Comment by Pundent Friday, Jun 17, 22 @ 2:05 pm

  18. Apologies then as I read that as Dr. Paul was not certified at all.
