I knew they’d arrive at an agreement on the new Ward Map to prevent it going to a vote. It’s to save the citizens of the city the costs associated with the vote dontcha know.

With respect, schools cannot do everything.
I think our politicians forget what our primary role is and we are not the parents although it feels like it most days. We do have counseling available to help kids, but that is really surface level and not intended to provide deep therapy.
While the right screams about keeping schools out of family business, they talk out of the other side of their mouths about doing more. I am absolutely not inferring that you are doing that, my point is that is one of the other battles we face in public education.
I hope it wasn’t your parent and if it was, you have my condolences.

URBANA — Retired U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson, 75, died Monday night at his Urbana home amid family and friends.
Mr. Johnson served in Congress from 2001 to 2013. Before that he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1977 to 2001. He began his political career more than 50 years ago when he was elected to the Urbana City Council in 1971.
He never lost an election race, most recently being elected to the board of Champaign’s Parkland College in 2015. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Tim Johnson was colorful to say the least. He had a temper that could make him “go off” in committee (once saw him stand on his chair and demand to be heard when a committee chair was trying to adjourn a committee). But, he understood constituent services and taking care of his district. He would often just open up the phone book and randomly call voters in his district to ask them their thoughts on issues.
After he got congress I worked with him on several issues and he was great to work with.

Back when I taught high school government, I would give students a copy of the Illinois handbook of government. The first thing the kids would do is look at the pics of the reps and senators. More than one saw Tim Johnson’s pic and said, “I didn’t know the Marlboro man was a state representative.”

As a Latino living in Chicago, I’m extremely frustrated and disappointed today. We deserved one more. We’re the reason the City and the state didn’t lose more than it did. You could’ve supported our map and still kept your same number, but you see the writing on the wall, so you’re trying to hold on to what you can for a little bit longer. Our city is a less just place today thanks to you.

I got one of those random phone calls. He asked about my family and I told him that a family member worked for an elected Democratic person. He quickly found an excuse why he needed to get off the phone. He clearly wasn’t interested in ‘my’ thoughts on the issues.
My current (also GOP). representative is similarly uninterested in any thoughts that do not mirror his own.

My thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and former colleagues of Tim Johnson.
When remembering Johnson, don’t forget the “paperclip voting” episode from his early days in the GA. When he first ran for Congress in 2000 his Democratic challenger brought up that story in the campaign:

Despite Sangamon County going back on heightened COVID alert, SJR reports that the District 186 plus Glenwood graduations that will be held in early June at the BOS Center downtown will lack COVID protocols and mask enforcement. Not a good idea.

Also, other than being one of (if not the largest) HS in Sangamon County, I don’t understand why Glenwood can’t return their graduation from the BoS Center and back to Chatham where it should be held. Or at least see if they could have it at UIS, which lies within the Ball-Chatham (Glenwood) district.

Maybe pick up the phone and contact the district and ask THEM why instead of posting the question here. I will never, for the life of me, understand why people post school questions to everyone but the school.

Tim Johnson was a smart guy and a good debater when he chose to be involved in the legislative process. However, I will remember Tim most for his epic melt down when one of the smaller public universities (EIU?) released the names of its General Assembly scholarship recipients/sponsors in response to a FOIA request. Until that time, there was a unified front against releasing that information.

Glenwood has over 300 graduates a year. They would have to limit the number of guests dramatically to make it work at UIS. It was a tight fit for Rochester, which usually had about 200 graduates, when they used UIS.

Sangamon Auditorium seats 2000. Plenty of seating for Glenwood.
