Chuy Garcia to finally endorse Delia Ramirez for Congress

Posted in:

* Press release…

On Tuesday, February 15, 2022, Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García will be endorsing State Representative Delia Ramirez for the Democratic nomination in the 3rd Congressional District in Illinois.

“Delia Ramirez is a proven fighter who delivers results for diverse, immigrant, and working-class families across Illinois. She’s fought hard in Springfield to secure critical legislative victories and deliver critical resources for our communities. She’s as fierce an advocate for social justice as she is an effective legislator. I’ve stood with Delia before, and I proudly stand with her once more.”

“Delia is who I believe in,” Garcia told the Chicago Sun-Times. “And I think that we need more Latinas in Congress.” At present there are 13 Latina members. “So it’s definitely time for them. And I hope my endorsement can make a difference.”

Ramirez, an assistant majority leader in the House, has one main rival in the June 28 primary, Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th). As of Dec. 31, Villegas raised $386,473 for his campaign and ended the year with $377,055 cash-on-hand.

Ramirez’s contributions totaled $113,218 and, as of Dec. 31, she had a balance of $110,443.

Asked what his endorsement will bring to Ramirez, Garcia said, “I will be involved in fundraising, helping her to make connections with potential donors in Washington D.C. Certainly there’s the potential for a Bernie endorsement as well. I will be exploring that with Bernie.”

The Bernie is Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont Independent, who Garcia is close to because he served as a national surrogate for Sanders in his two presidential campaigns. Sanders stumped for Garcia when he ran for Chicago mayor and Congress, with the two sharing a base of progressive, activist supporters.

  1. HUGE for her campaign! Chuy backs winners

  2. Happy that Chuy has endorsed Delia Ramirez but disappointed in the stated reasons. Chuy could have said that we need more people in Congress that refuse corporate PAC money but instead slips into identity politics and says we need more Latinas. Sorry but that is not as important than having someone free from corporate influence.

  4. “HUGE for her campaign! Chuy backs winners” @10th Ward 9:20 am — “He backs winners” except when he lost his seat to Sen. Muñoz or lost endorsing a candidate against former Rep Acevedo among other unsuccessful endorsements. But to your post. Yes… Chuy’s Ramirez endorsement will definitely have a huge impact in the race.

  5. @City Zen

Kennedy and the Ed Burke race are the exceptions that prove the rule perhaps?

The only person who still talks about the Tony Munoz victory 20 years ago and convicted ex state Rep Acevedo is Victor Reyes.
    Et tu, Víctor? LOL

  7. “ instead slips into identity politics and says we need more Latinas” Sounds like you support her anyway? Vote for her and write her a check and be done with it.

  8. Really?-@ 11:55 am — Non est non victor….so those two candidates did not beat Chuy?….go check the board of elections results, please.

  9. Moi— not going to belabor this. My point was that nobody cares about a 20 year old victory over then state Senator Garcia who is now the most powerful Latino politician in Illinois when Munoz is out of Senate leadership. And Rep Acevedo is just an ex-rep who’s going to jail. Again, old news. Today’s endorsement is new news. Let’s stick with that.

  10. While new to the State House, Rep. Ramirez does not have the experience, political skills, military experience as Ald. Villegas.

While Congressman Garcia backs winners, they don’t always win.

Ald. Villegas will take the nod in June.

  12. @Really — “Garcia who is now the most powerful Latino politician in Illinois “WHEN” Munoz is out of Senate leadership”…ah, ok….Let’s stick with that.

  13. Although Garcia and Muñoz don’t seem to be competing against each other these days, I think it’s a pretty obvious answer as to who has the most influence.

  14. Iris Y. Martinez - the Clerk of the Circuit Court in Cook County has more influence and credibility in the new 3rd Congressional District (northwest side) than does Chuy Garcia and she has endorsed Alderman Gilbert Villegas for this position. I believe this is going to be a very close race, but ultimately Alderman Gil Villegas will emerge victorious.

  15. It’s interesting to see how much sway Bernie has in Illinois politics due to his relationship who Chuy.

The majority of the new 3rd was in the old 4th. If Iris had more influence than Chuy in that area, she’d be congresswoman.

  17. Not sure this get is that big. Sounds good, but won’t carry the same weight in this new district. Villegas has the kind of story and record that will resonate more with these voters. I’m not even sure Chuy could win this district.

  18. This congressional seat will be fought for, & it seems that both major candidates have something going for them. Ramírez seems to have a chance with Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s endorsement & help with fundraising & canvassing.
