  1. They said during the briefing yesterday that the last time this kind of snowstorm happened the reason they had to shut down the interstates was to go rescue people. Looks like it’s happening again.

  2. just because you have a 4×4 doesn’t mean you can stop faster than a 4×2.

Good day to find a barstool and look out the window or the TV with the weather girl on WGN

  3. Nearly 2/3rds of the state’s roads are in terrible condition. Please stay home if you can. It’s just going to get worse with the increased winds and additional snow coming in. https://www.gettingaroundillinois.com/winterconditions/

Agree, and many many times it is the prople driving a 4×4 that you see in the ditch first.

  5. = many times it is the people driving a 4×4 that you see in the ditch first =

Yep. They think they can handle the snow and ice, but they forget that a higher center of gravity means they’re more likely to tip over. That’s why you sometimes get high-wind restrictions for semis and other high-profile vehicles on interstates.

  6. Staying in today. Even having breakfast at home because our regular restaurant is closed.

Neighbor just was kind enough to do everyone’s driveways and sidewalks with his big snowblower.

A 4×4 just gets you into trouble much faster. Learned that lesson the hard way.

  8. I wish some of the stay home messages were aimed at employers to let their workforce stay home. I saw some restaurant was advertising they were open today despite the storm and it just made me think about their poor employees and not want to patronize them in the future.

  9. Had to venture out to attend my father’s cremation today. A fella with some IL bonafides, Rich; he was appointed to oversee Dart’s compliance with the Shakman Decrees.

    Anyway, it’s rough out there.

    Including the State.

  11. Google maps showing lots of INterstate closures in central Illinois including NB 55 in Springfield area, and westbound 72 on the southwest side of Springfield.

  12. “Including the State.”

IDOT got a CMS memo that said to go home at 2pm. If working remote, may stop working. State offices are closed until Friday 2/4/22.

  13. Years ago during a snowstorm, my father was pulling 4 x 4’s out of ditches with his 4 x 2 pickup (banned punctuation) near his house. Fire Dept was checking all vehicles stopped to make sure nobody was trapped. Dad watched a 4 x 4 go flying past only to wind up involuntarily off road moments later.
And Rich is channeling the late Sgt. Phil Esterhaus of Hill Street Blues, who used to end roll calls with “….and HEY…Let’s be careful out there.” Durn good advice in this weather. Don’t add to First Responder’s problem, eh?

Agencies under the Governor will have their offices closed at 2:00 pm today and will remain closed tomorrow. If you have a problem then take it up with your employer.

Not the Constitutionals, at least not yet. For example, at SOS it’s business as usual rest of today and tomorrow. Unless a decision on tomorrow is made later. ALthough some central IL facilities are closed due to the storm. From SOS page:

“Due to hazardous road conditions, some Driver Services facilities have been closed and others have suspended road tests. The following facilities are closed for the day: Beardstown, Bradley, Canton, Carthage, Gibson City, Greenville, Havana, Hillsboro, Monmouth, Pontiac, Rantoul, Roanoke, Streator, Taylorville, Tilton, Vandalia

  16. Had to go out today for doctor’s appointment. They didn’t want to reschedule. Lucky I have a 4×4, but I don’t drive like I own the road. Take it slow, folks.

  17. Still inside, still waiting for the snowplow service to arrive. I’m finally getting my money’s worth this winter. Time for my third hot cocoa.
