Irvin Lies to Voters on TV While Continuing to Hide From Them In Real Life
Today, in an unprecedented move for a statewide candidate, Richard Irvin went up with his first paid TV ad of the campaign. The only problem? Irvin has still not met with voters, held a public event, or answered questions from the media.
In the ad, Irvin spreads the same lies he told in his announcement video, including the claim that as mayor, he called in the National Guard to Aurora. Only the governor can call in the National Guard and despite being fact-checked for this lie, he continues to repeat it on air. Clearly, Irvin and the rest of the Rauner Reboot slate think they can avoid accountability for their words as long as they can avoid talking to voters or reporters.
Richard Irvin would prefer to not answer basic questions like where he stands on a woman’s right to choose, who he voted for in the 2016 Democratic primary, if he thinks the 2020 election was stolen, or why he flip-flopped from saying Black Lives Matter to All Lives Matter. And why won’t Irvin or the slate answer simple questions? Because Ken Griffin won’t let them.
For Griffin and his Rauner Reboot slate, this election isn’t about solving the big challenges facing Illinois families. They just want to implement disastrous policies to take us backwards — and they aren’t interested in being held accountable by voters, reporters, or anyone else.

Today, Richard Irvin released his first TV ad despite not meeting with voters, holding a public event, or answering questions from the media in the week since declaring his candidacy.

The ad features the same lies and hypocrisy Irvin has based his entire campaign on. He claims he called the National Guard to Aurora, even though he was called out for this lie before. Only the governor — who Irvin himself has praised numerous times — can call in the National Guard. And since the protests shown in the ad, Irvin has flip-flopped from saying Black Lives Matter to All Lives Matter.
Instead of speaking with Illinoisans about the challenges they face, Irvin is busy parroting big donor Ken Griffin’s agenda of dragging Illinois back to the failed policies of Bruce Rauner.
By dodging events and interviews, Irvin has avoided the tough questions like why he’s voted for Democrats in the past and where he stands on a woman’s right to choose.
“Richard Irvin doesn’t know where he stands — which is why his only strategy is to dodge questions or lie,” said DGA Senior Communications Advisor Christina Amestoy. “Once Illinoisans hear Irvin’s true intentions of a Rauner reboot, they’ll see the Griffin slate is more interested in undoing progress than moving forward.”

This idea Aurora was “occupied” or threatened to *be* occupied seems a bit too much with the strong idea of a message.

C+/B- Footage of the Aurora riots, even after the national guard comes in, doesn’t exactly scream “safety.” Running on his record on the crime issue could be risky given the numbers there (and in almost every Illinois city to be fair). Big step down from his personal story.

Holy right wing, Batman, who wrote this commercial, Todd Ricketts? 2020 called and wants its images back. The riots happened over a year ago. Irvin said he supported BLM last year, but now he’s “all lives matter.” Girl, please.
Didn’t expect this type of commercial and thought it would be much milder, and introductory. But, it’s the GOP primary and base.

As to OW point about the guard. I don’t think a mayor actually can call in the guard. Don’t the local authorities I guess mayor have to say a situation is so bad that they are unable to handle it so they go asking for help and someone helps them (Pritzger) do the job they are not able to do? So Pritzger save Irvin because Irvin incompetent

Don’t know that I’d put a lie in my first ad about the guard. Pretty sure Pritzker deployed them to every population center county during that time.
We know who this is appealing to, but it does break my heart to see the old gang back together ready to tear the state down again with advertising dollars. Guess we’re back into everything is terrible in Illinois mode.

C-level production. D- for a launch ad. This is the one you pull out when you’re 7 points down in April.
Why didn’t they use some of the earlier online intro video? I get that it’s a GOP primary in the current, um, climate, but conceptually it still seems like a misfire.

The issue likely polls well in the primary and general election. A- for the ad.
Good size ad buy and reinforces the candidate’s name. It will draw a strong contrast to a “soft on crime”, highly privileged, caucasian Governor.

Was the riot footage from Aurora or was was it from Chicago and/or other cities?
Why is that relevant? The ad speaks to what Irvin did however if the visuals don’t actually represent the reality on the ground in Aurora then do the claims of how effective he was have any credibility?

Ad is designed to change the message towards issues that he would control vs ones that Bailey or others might win on during a primary. It’s just enough of a general election message, but still soaking with all the red meat. I give it a C+

I watched it first without sound. It starts with angry African Americans rioting and then someone who looks like an angry Jesse Jackson Jr. preaching. Non verbal messages matter. Not sure what people will “hear” with this one.

It’s a solid B. Feeds GOP primary voters the red meat they crave. (Jesse Sullivan has a similar ad running this morning in Chicago.)
This line of attack does not come without risk. It invites scrutiny of crime in Aurora under Irvin’s tenure. That was probably coming no matter what, but by portraying himself as Elliott Ness he’s really begging for it.

Red meat for the base that doesn’t want to think too hard.
1. Mayors can’t call in the guard
2. His police chief marched with the protestors earlier in the day and he expressed sympathy for the nonviolent protestors.
3. “Take back our state” The Ours/The Other dog whistle is strong and is sadly where this campaign is headed.

The “tough on crime” posturing and showing 2020 riots is so hypocritical. The ILGOP opposed Trump’s impeachment over inciting a violent insurrection and trying to destroy democracy. Most Republican voters still support him. The ad is a dog whistle to the base. The guy just supported BLM. Thought it would have been a different type of ad. Thought Irvin might not have bought in that far.

The new Sullivan ad is on the same topic and it’s just a better ad, it looks like it’s designed to appeal to Republican primary voters, it’s not even clear from the Irvin ad that he’s running in the Republican primary. Sullivan’s buy isn’t as big as Irvin’s but it’s a real buy, and his spot is the more likely to move numbers of the two.

really doesn’t matter if its the Gov. who calls in the guard. Irvin is the face of the situation. honestly as someone who lives in the fox valley this ad isn’t really based in reality, Aurora did have some really bad nights in the summer of 2020. More could have been done to stop the senseless destruction. Help was only called in after the aggressors got their ya ya’s out.
with that being said. unless you live in downtown Aurora, you’ll probably just accept that Irvin was the hero that stopped the riots.

Can confirm the footage is from Aurora (actually fairly easy to id to locations in town).
Not a bad idea to lead with, hey the others talk about doing something about violence, I did something. If you think this isn’t a big deal I would say you are unlikely to vote in a Republican primary.
I get why they are leading with this, but would suggest they follow up with a biography ad before too long.

It’s also a message to the people he’ll have to work with as Governor. Bipartisan comity and productive governing will be rewarded with false credit-hogging and mendacious hyperbole. I guess that makes it a good ad for the Republican primary.

The ‘living in fear’ comments are interesting to me. Our friends who live in the City and suburbs, Dems and GOPers are all concerned about their safety for months and months now. They talk about it, they question why it’s happening and they are more careful out there. They will all I think react positively to this type of message.

Effective ad for the primary. No need to worry about the general just yet. This “Guard” quote is not an issue. He asked the Governor for troops like a bunch of mayors did. You’re losing if you want to get caught up in the nuance of “who” can call the Guard in.

I’d give it a B. I suppose the ad works on its desired audience. But if you believe that crime is the most pressing issue facing us you’re probably not voting for Pritzker to begin with. I hope that Irvin’s campaign isn’t as dark as his introduction.
But I have this lingering feeling that Irving’s campaign is no more about crime than Rauner’s was on “shakin things up.” What I really want to know is what Ken Griffin’s expectations and objectives will be if he is able to reinstall his chosen candidate. Something tells me that crime isn’t at the top of his list. Might not even be on the list.

D+ for production. This seems like a rough cut of a better ad.
But the whole thing falls apart when he talks. It comes off as tough talk into a microphone. Dare I say “Lightfootesque.”
Overall F, and it will get worse as he has to backpedal about the National Guard, his flip on BLM, and more.

Meh, that goes both ways. Joe and JB aren’t exactly putting their running mates front and center on favorable issues. Kamala was given the border as a focal point which was a no-win situation from day 1.
And likely 95% of Illinoisians haven’t even heard of Richard Irvin to this point, so hard to critique him on not giving Avery Bourne her own 30 second ads in January when he needs to introduce himself to people.
Ad is a B+. It will play well with the base and not too controversial for the general.

Trying to set Irvin up as an action hero is hilarious. What’s he gonna do, arm wrestle Don Harmon?
That being said, being on the air at all is more important than what you say on the air, so what I’m really curious about is how long he stays on the air. $1.5M won’t let you do it for very long, but getting on the air at all might let you goose donations so you can do more ads.
My question is why they didn’t have this ad ready to go at launch.

There’s not much nuance to it, as seen in the DPI response. Irvin lied. He didn’t call up the NG because he can’t. But Governors can, and Pritzker did, and now you’re handing the issue to the other party.

Genuine question - what makes people think this is a bad ad for the general election? A mayor standing up to criminals ransacking his city?
What specifically was said or communicated in this ad that you don’t think at least 60% of the electorate would feel positive towards? What polling or other data gives you that impression?

I’ll give it a “B” because it fits in line with the mood of the electorate, in particular the primary electorate.
But the Governor might as well get an ad up on the air that says “when Richard Irvin lost control of the streets of Aurora, I ordered the national guard to go and support his police department” and call it a day.

It’s OK on reflecting fear and discomfort for now. But the image should be less macho strongman, and more responsible competence.
Avery Bourne is a better speaker than Irvin. They should begin to move her a little closer to the front, rather than not even mentioning her name.

I think we learned a long time ago that political ads don’t have to be “true” to be effective. Kinda telling that DPI responded to Irvin’s ad so quickly and nothing yet on Sullivan’s ad.
Also you gotta love politics. When my candidate lies he/she “misspoke.” When your candidates lies, he/she is a liar…

This is a strong indiction of the campaign that Irvin will run I guess. It will be mostly video and social media so the “tough” questions like the contrast in his support for BLM and the “tough on protestors” image he wants to create dont get traction via verbal gaffes.
The more the media howls about answering questions the more the base loves it because they (the right) see the media is corrupt. All good for the base , but he will have a tough time expanding his base for a win in the general if this is his approach.

Solid B. Too many commenters are assessing it from the perspective of a Democratic and/or general election voter. Republican base voters are *still* very upset about the unrest that happened during summer of 2020 and they blame Democratic mayors for how this was handled and connect it to how they are handling rising violent crime. Irvin is distinguishing himself and showcasing his Republican bonafides. It’s red meat and better than Sullivan’s ad which doesn’t tell us anything about why he is qualified to address Chicago’s crime problem.

Good ad… hits on the theme du jour.
And it appeals to far more than the right wing base. In case you’ve not noticed, liberal Democrats like Ann Williams, Sara Feigenholtz, and others are now backing away from the criminal reform and Speaker Welch want to pass a new crime bill.
Why - its simple - its foremost on the minds of voters. This ad and theme hits Democrats in a vulnerable flank and for those that disagree, I’ll bet you we see a crime ad from JB.

Yes, that is the strategy. Don’t get killed downstate and win through the collars, but I also disagree that the riots are a Chicagoland issue. There were riots in Champaign, Peoria and Decatur, Rockford the Quad cities and others. If you think downstate Republicans aren’t talking about urban violence and crime, then you are just not listening.

White people know what these/those people mean.
It’s Darren Bailey taking PPP and raising taxes but “those” people getting SNAP benefits are ruining our state and bankrupting us. Having to keep raising taxes to take care of “those” people is unfair to hardworking men and women.
Subtle words are important and Irvin being black and saying those subtle words gives others permission to believe it, say it and not feel bad about it.

Some of these ad ratings are too low. Both this and the Sullivan ad show up in Rich’s media buys information as only airing on Fox News.
Therefore I would give.the Irvin ad an A for personalizing the candidate as being anti-Chicago/tough on rioters as a mayor and the Sullivan ad a B- because while it hits the same notes GOP primary voters want to heat the connection to Afghanistan is much more tenuous.
