* The Brennan Center has a new study up entitled “Preparing Your State for an Election Under Pandemic Conditions”…

Here’s a 50-state breakdown of what policies states already have and still need in order to best protect the November 2020 election from the Covid-19 pandemic.

* Illinois was the only state to meet all of the criteria. Click the pic for the full list. The last column is same-day registration, by the way. It got cut off…

The Brennan Center only dinged Illinois on one topic: We have no pre-paid statewide postage for mail-in ballots. Fourteen states have that.

Lack of prepaid postage to return a ballot is such an impediment to voting. May as well not vote. /s

I wonder if someone will sue claiming that required postage constitutes a poll tax.

To be fair the * is that for the first two metrics some states already do vote by mail entirely for every single voter

But still we’ve made great progress to prepare for the election this November

True, but you have to look at their laws for COUNTING those ballots and additional requirements imposed on first time voters. They have some additional restrictions.

Anyone who would call a few cents for a stamp a poll tax would be laughed out of the room.

At yet in national surveys Illinois always ranks right in the middle of voter turnout as a percentage of voting age population.

It cost me $1.40. Cheap at twice the price. I can see making it free for lower income voters but the state doesn’t need to get any further in the red for me. It’s a bargain as is.

you can also return your vote by mail ballot at your local clerk’s office even if you don’t have money for return postage, but do not want to vote in person.
