* Earlier this week we had some fun with a photo of a coyote across the street from Gibson’s. Since then, however, things got ugly…
Residents in Chicago have been rattled after two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were attacked by coyotes on the same day … after at least a decade without an incident.
Both attacks occurred Wednesday. The Chicago Tribune reports the boy was walking on a path near the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. A coyote lying on a grassy hill bit the boy on the head and had to be fought off by the boy’s nanny and other bystanders, the Tribune reports. USA Today reports the boy is recovering and is in “good spirits” in Lurie Children’s Hospital.

A coyote was caught on Chicago’s North Side Thursday evening, but authorities said it was not yet known whether it’s the same animal that attacked a 5-year-old boy the day before about two miles away.
The coyote, which appeared injured, was spotted around 10 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Dayton Street in the Lincoln Park area, according to Chicago Animal Care and Control. Workers from the agency caught up with the animal about a block away and “safely” shot it with a tranquilizer dart.
The coyote was taken to the agency’s facilities for “further evaluation,” it said in a tweet. […]
But Ald. Brian Hopkins, whose 2nd Ward includes the museum, tweeted that “preliminary indications strongly suggest this is the animal involved … waiting for DNA test results to confirm.”
The alderman said the coyote may also be the same animal that bit a man in the buttocks later Wednesday in Streeterville. Neither the boy nor the man — who showed up at a hospital with what he said was a coyote bite — suffered life-threatening injuries.

I heard on a Chicago radio station that Illinois is a no kill coyotes state. Ironically, CFD rescued a coyote from Lake Michigan earlier this week.

If there is one thing Chicago loves, it’s tracking attempts to capture atypical wild animals.

My theory is the lack of snowfall is making them hungry. Brown rodents hard to see on brown grass. Can’t follow their preys’ tracks to their burrows either. If coyotes learn how to cross streets safely, and they have, they can definitely track small prey in snow. IMHO.

Each year, between 30 and 50 Americans are killed by dogs. More than four-million Americans are bitten by dogs every year, resulting in the hospitalization of 6,000 to 13,000 people.
There have only been two (2) recorded incidences in the United States and Canada of humans being killed by coyotes.
Ever.

Question, what are they going to do with it?
I get that CPD isn’t set up to deal with Coyotes but it seems odd to tranq it if it simply get’s euthanized.
P no offense but the snow or lack
isn’t hurting Coyotes. Most likely they’re scavenging trash. As a plus they love eating cats so they’ve likely reduced the stray cat population.

That radio report is patently false. Illinois is not a ‘no kill’ coyote state. https://www.dnr.illinois.gov/hunting/Pages/HuntTrapDigest.aspx
However, I would anticipate that there are major restrictions on harvesting coyotes in Cook County and the collar counties. This situation will likely involve local police, IL Dept of Natural Resources Conservation Police and animal control. The urban area where these animals are living complicates how best to limit future incidents of coyote/human interactions. Even in suburban areas I believe you are encouraged to get a nuisance permit or engage a pest control service or animal control. But there definitely isn’t a prohibition against killing coyotes in Illinois. Coyote is a year round hunting season that is only closed during deer season in counties open to firearm deer hunting. Coyotes have no real population of natural predators in Illinois so their populations can explode if there is easy access to food for them. This can have a negative impact on not only humans who live near coyotes but other prey species like turkeys, rabbits, small birds and voles. Coyote hunting isn’t terribly popular compared to deer hunting even downstate so many people aren’t aware of it.

Lincoln Park High School where my son is a senior was on lockdown for 4 hours mid-day yesterday as the coyote was spotted in Oz Park next door. I know they are trying to be safe, but after the CPS strike and then makeup days when have the students and teachers are gone so they are just watching videos, and then this…It has been a very disruptive, tiring year. [Ooops, I just made the coyote headline about the teacher’s strike; my bad].

Over a century of relentless eradiction efforts at the cost of millions has resulted in coyotes spreading all over North America and now into South Ameica. Resilency doesn’t begin to describe coyotes. Check digitalcommons.unl.edu to see Dr. Stan Gehrt’s study on Urban Coyotes, University of Ohio. Shooting them hasn’t worked. Removing outdoor food sources helps.

Have to agree with MrJM coyotes are not really dangerous to humans. If you do encounter a coyote, and it does not run from you, it is probably diseased.
They are, however, extremely dangerous to domestic animals under 20 pounds. I’ve lost at least 2 indoor outdoor/barn cats to coyotes (another disappeared without evidence of foul play by I have my suspensions). One was consumed on premises, and the other was carry out. I replaced them with glue strips. Coyotes don’t eat glue strips.

Coyotes downstate are more afraid of people than their urban and suburban relatives. Downstate they get shot.
As a pheasant hunter they are a plus. More coyotes means fewer foxes and raccoons. Foxes and raccoons take more pheasants and pheasant eggs than coyotes. When they take down diseased deer, that is another plus.
One coyote is a nuisance. Three coyotes as a pack are dangerous.

Coyotes also kill foxes because they compete for the same prey. I read a few years ago that foxes are moving into residential areas to avoid coyotes. I have seen both red and grey foxes in a couple of different Springfield neighborhoods.

I live in an area of DuPage County in which coyote sightings are not uncommon. I used to laugh at the paranoia shown by people that documented every sighting on local Facebook groups… until I saw one Monday night. They’re pretty big… and as wild animals, unpredictable, so as a lifelong city slicker, I realized I have no idea what to do if I’m face to face with one (and not in my car as I was on Monday night), so I get the hysterics to a certain extent.

As of now, the coyote’s family has retained Loevy and Loevy with the intent of filing a federal civil rights case against Chicago Police for excessive force. Matthew Topic, attorney for the coyote family, called the needless use of force by the militarized chicago police senselessly violent.
**This is satire, not intended to imply that Loevy and Loevy would EVER take a frivolous case and try to extort the taxpayers**

The captured coyote is obviously a patsy. The single coyote theory already being floated less than 48 hours after the attacks is very suspicious. This is how it starts, find a scapegoat while the real biters are still free and the coyote cabal wielding the true power remains able to manipulate our beliefs behind the scenes. We need Oliver Stone to look into this.

You would drive ten hours round trip for an animal’s carcass? You know you can get a good used fur coat at the thrift store, with lining and arms and pockets etc for the cost of your gas.
