  7. Was thinking of how tough it must be for John Schriffen as the new Sox TV announcer. It takes the fans a while to get used to the new guy, and it takes a while for a young guy to find his voice.

But to have to go through that with a team this terrible is an extra challenge. Best of luck to him. I miss Jason Benetti, but what’s done is done.

  8. @Friendly Bob Adams:

It is hard, but not impossible.

Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean made his name as an announcer radio broadcasting for the St. Louis Browns. Things got so bad that Dean once accepted a challenge and exited the booth to start a game for the Browns despite having been retired as an active player for several seasons. Naturally, the Browns lost the game after Dean left with a no decision.

Dean moved on to become the voice of “The Game of the Week.”

If Schriffen is good, he will make it despite the Sox being bad.

  9. As to Dean’s final game, the visiting opponents of the last place St. Louis Browns on September 28, 1947 (the final game of the regular season) were the 6th place Chicago White Sox. Dean pitched four scoreless innings and allowed three hits. He left the game after pulling a hamstring while running out a single.

The Sox scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th inning and held off the Browns as the home team scored twice for a 5-2 victory. Eddie Lopat pitched a complete game for Chicago. Over 15,000 attended the game (a good crowd for the Browns) which was completed in less than two hours (1:50).
