  1. Just came across this Open Secrets tweet which IDs the University of Illinois as the no. 4 national spender on federal lobbying amongst universities. I always think its sad when public entities have to employ lobbyists.

  3. Second billing cycle ended since ComEd moved to their new billing system and hourly pricing customers still can’t see the breakdown of any savings they are getting. Still very much worth being on the hourly pricing though since I think I’ve saved about $230 over the last 4 months versus the standard rate.

  4. April is proving to be the cruelest month here in beautiful DuPage County… 34 degrees going up to a high of 36 degrees. With rain for the fourth day in a row.

At least the White Sox have won a game. Only 61 more wins to exceed last year’s total…

  6. Re: hisgirlfriday

Given the number of projects that the Engineering and CS departments have with the feds, I’m not shocked at all that the school lobbies the feds to get those projects to CU.

  7. @hisgirlfriday: So long as we have many independent government agencies at different levels (municipal, county, state, federal) that all answer to different elected officials who in turn have different constituencies, lobbying will be necessary. Squeaky wheels get the grease. If you’re not vocal about needing or wanting resources, and not advocating why giving you those resources is better for everyone than giving those resources to someone else, then you’re going to lose out.

Federalism has lots of pros and cons. One of the cons is that the competitiveness for things like federal funding (or for state funding, when it comes to municipalities seeking state grants) means a lot of money and effort is wasted trying to get more money back. It is a completely rational thing for the University (or any other entity) to do, but it means government resources are being expended for essentially infighting between various government entities.

  8. === OK, apart from those, what do you have? They were on the 5th Floor for 23 years. ===

    Chicago school “reform.”

940 murders in 1992, the second-most violent year in the entire history of the city.

For perspective, The Great Chicago Fire claimed 300 lives.

  9. Congrats to the Illini WBB team for winning the inaugural WBIT.

As for my Cardinals in baseball, cannot wait for the home opener.

  10. “Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.”
