House Minority Leader Tony McCombie is calling on a statewide moratorium when it comes to accepting migrants, claiming the expense is too high for the state.
“We have to take care of what is here today,” McCombie, R-Savanna, said during a press conference last week. “But we do not have the services that can accommodate this influx of folks.”
Just hit the “off” switch. Easy peasy.

Immigration is one of the answers to our pension problems. We rely on economic and population growth and without it, our fiscal problems multiply.

Yeah. Just stating we now have a moratorium is going to stop things. If Rep. McCombie is concerned perhaps she can call up her fellow Republican in Texas and ask him to stop sending migrants here. It is an individual from her party that is doing this.

As noted previously, I am not a fan of “first name” politics. It suggest all leaders are not to be taken seriously, and that their positions are unworthy of respect. But I digress.
It seems to me the proper solution Gov. Abbott should be following is seeking help, rather than enhancing chaos. Rep. McCombie should be collaborating with her colleagues to find workable solutions, rather than advocating a do-nothing for the poor and oppressed seeking asylum approach.
If we are to be leaders in the realm of politics, the choice always exists between advocating rhetoric, and advocating on behalf of the people. And with a divided people, the solution is always in between unless one side chooses to abuse the people.
Find common ground. That’s why you serve. Rep. McCombie needs to be signaling Gov. Abbott that his practices are unacceptable and ineffective, both here and there. No one benefits by enhancing chaos. Gov. Abbott needs to learn that he can accomplish more by working with the other United States, rather than working against them by his own unnecessary and ineffective design.

I don’t understand why we allowed Abbott to get off so easy.
He took it upon himself to bus thousands of Texas migrants to Chicago?
Put them back on buses and send them back to Texas.
When he gets tired of dealing that, we can all get together as a nation and decide what to do about immigration.

You legally can’t do that if the migrants don’t want to go. It’s why Texas has not been busted for human trafficking.

There’s no constitutional mechanism for this as far as I know. We could do what Texas is doing - pay for their voluntary interstate travel. But there’s no way to “reject” anyone from crossing interstate borders based on immigration status, because we’re a free country.

This is the first time in the history of the world that a mayor named Brandon Johnson has made that claim, but it doesn’t seem to have stopped him from breaking precedent. Put the CYA word games aside and get to work.

All he is doing is playing politics using human beings. I think that’s disgusting.
As for what the “answer” is, the answer is the federal government stepping in and doing something. I have no idea what that “something” is other than to tell the people yelling “build a wall” that they are idiots.

No offense but Texas has been asking for help since Rick Perry was Governor. Help didn’t come. I’m not saying this is a great policy by Texas but an awful lot of Americans were happy to ignore the issue and allow the border states to bear the costs.

Meanwhile, they have continually killed any legislation that would help. That includes the Gang of Eight deal a few months before the article you posted. It’s almost like they don’t actually want to improve anything, but instead use it as a political tool.

Actually, it is effective. Texas got ignored for years when they asked the Feds for help. Now other Governors are asking the Feds for help, and, instead of sweeping it under the rug, that is generating a national debate and potentially some Federal action.
It isn’t pretty, but politics is all about the art of the possible … and since the Governor of Texas can’t take Federal action, he’s doing what is perceived to be best for Texas.

No offense but Illinois has been asking for help on the gun violence issue since Jim Thompson was Governor. Help didn’t come. I’m not saying this is a great policy by Illinois (the recent gun legislation) but an awful lot of Americans were happy to ignore the issue and allow the big cities to bear the costs.

If only there was a national bipartisan border bill literally waiting for passage. A Democrat in New York turned the tables on GOP immigration messaging and won the special election last week.
But America can’t have a national solution to the problem Republicans have been screaming about while there’s a presidential election. How can the candidate run when his main issue is taken away? How can people put their country over party at a time like this?

The “proper solution” depends on how the problem is defined. To Abbott, the problem is political, not humanitarian. “Enhancing chaos” may in his eyes therefore be very much part of the “proper solution.”

Gov. Abbott got the attention he wanted, that’s for sure. But, did he really want a solution? The Republicans (including the TX delegation to Congress) have consistently rebuffed possible solutions in favor of nothing. Perhaps he should talk to his Cong. delegation about voting for one of the negotiated solutions. Or, maybe, he just wants the attention.

That’s exactly what the Republicans want right now. They aren’t really interested in fixing the problem right now. That’s not good politics for them. Hence the continuation of treating human beings like cattle.
