Abbott publicly rejected Pritzker plea, but his buses aren’t showing up

Posted in:

* Sun-Times

Pritzker on Friday begged Abbott in a letter to show some mercy for the migrants sent to Chicago on planes and buses and dressed for warmer climates as the city and state scramble to find more shelters.

Pritzker said in the letter: “Please, while winter is threatening vulnerable people’s lives, suspend your transports and do not send more people to our state.”

On Friday, a spokesperson for Abbott said Pritzker’s request for a pause would not be granted.

Abbott may have publicly rejected a pause, but I checked with the city and the state this morning and no migrants have arrived in Chicago via bus since Friday and none are expected today. So, we’ll see. Maybe the companies didn’t want to risk the weather. More here.

  1. Abbott’s behavior is heartless. Regardless of your political view, his actions have created dangerous conditions for human beings.

  2. Maybe best suited for the open thread, but somewhat relevant here.

    The city of Crest Hill attempted to pass a bus ordinance last night.

    I think they are the first non-home rule municipality to attempt to do so, and it led to interesting results. As non-home rule, the city can only pass ordinances equal to existing state laws - of which there are none for this recent spur of bus ordinances. It’s why Dupage came out a few weeks ago and made clear non home rule governments were unable to pass these types of ordinances. But Crest Hill seems to have decided this week to try to put that square peg in the round hole.

    So the city used as a citation, (65 ILCS 5/11-42-6), which gives the city the power to license and regulate its own bus drivers. Based on that citation, the city passed an ordinance to regulate inter city bus traffic of non-city employed bus drivers.

    I suppose it stands until it is challenged, but it still looks sloppy - and pandering.

  3. -Abbott’s behavior is heartless-

    It was 19 degrees in Houston yesterday: just for some perspective.

  4. ===It was 19 degrees in Houston yesterday===

    And your point? That’s quite a bit north of the border. It’s 53 in El Paso today.

  5. “…his actions have created dangerous conditions for human beings.”

    Abbott, Trump and the rest of the MAGA Republicans don’t see them as human beings. They just don’t care.

    And is Abbott been looked at for human trafficking?

  6. Since Texas is waging a type of war on blue States, I propose that IL Senators and Reps, remember this when Texas needs assistance from the next Cat 4 Hurricane, or power failure of their unregulated home state power grid. I would agree to aid, conditioned on them instituting an Income tax. They have the Tax base now from the influx of people and wont need to sponge off blue states.

  7. =It was 19 degrees in Houston yesterday: just for some perspective.=

    It is 57 in Madrid Spain today, and that has as much to do with anything as your comment.

    Abbott is a complete tool for his little stunt but if the state and city really thought about it, they could really make him look like a fool by embracing these immigrants rather than running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

  8. -And your point?-

    Not exactly warm all over Texas: unless you think living outside when its’ 19 degrees is doable.

    Comment by Steve Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 11:53 am

  9. Lovely Texas, the slave holding state that seceded from two different nations. It has a huge amount of territory and sufficient hatred to fill it from border to border.

  10. Who will freeze faster — someone in 19 degree weather or negative 8 degree weather? That’s almost a 30 degree difference, not counting the effect of windchill.

  11. Tired of cruelty being ok, even admired. Also tired of it being supported by voters, and the officials they elect. I miss the country we used to be… not as painted by MAGA, but the one that believed you did the right thing, took care of those needing help, and cared for others because that’s how you were raised and what you were judged over by family and neighbors.

    When he starts busing migrants to Houston instead of Chicago let me know.

  13. The open border policies of the current administration “have created dangerous conditions for human beings.” There, fixed it for all of you. Unless we get our southern border under control nothing will change.

    Comment by Which one is Pink Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 1:08 pm

  14. The whole country should pitch in and help with these immigrants. Maybe that would motivate enough law makers to fix the law or fund the immigration courts or whatever the root cause is.

    Comment by Tall one Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 1:15 pm

  15. What Tall One said… agree 100%.

    Comment by Lincoln Lad Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 1:35 pm

  16. == open border policies of the current administration==

    Under the law asylum seekers have a right to be here until their cases are adjudicated. It is not just an administration policy. These kind of irrelevant talking points aren’t helpful.

    Comment by Big Dipper Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 1:38 pm

  17. =or whatever the root cause is=

    The inability to work. Assimilating migrants would be far easier but for this hurdle. And it would address critical labor shortage problems to boot.

  18. ==Not exactly warm all over Texas: unless you think living outside when its’ 19 degrees is doable.==

    And again @Steve, what is your point? You don’t seem to have any intelligent point as far as I can tell.

    Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 1:58 pm

  19. -Under the law asylum seekers have a right to be here until their cases are adjudicated-

    That’s the problem, defining most of the people crossing the border as asylum seekers even when they aren’t.

    Comment by Which one is Pink Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 1:59 pm

  20. ==request for a pause would not be granted==

    When you have zero care for your fellow human beings it’s easy to make such a statement. I think he should be thrown in jail for what he has done.

    Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 2:02 pm

  21. =defining most of the people crossing the border as asylum seekers even when they aren’t.=

    The law deems them to be asylum seekers until adjudicated otherwise. It’s been that way for a long, long time. But go on and tell us how this is all the fault of the current administration.

  23. The current administration seems to be facilitating the process and doing nothing to staunch the flow of migrants at our southern border. What we are currently doing cannot be sustainable in the long run.

    Comment by Which one is Pink Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 2:15 pm

  24. Is our southern border secure and under control? I’m all for an orderly immigration policy where all those coming into this country are properly vetted. I argue the current process is anything but orderly.

    Comment by Which one is Pink Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 2:25 pm

  25. There is a quote attributed to Gen. Phil Sheridan: “If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell.” For what Abbott is doing I’m thinking when he gets to the Pearly Gates he might be told, “You’ve lived in Texas, now it’s your turn for Hell.”

  28. =I argue the current process is anything but orderly.=

    There are many good arguments to make and criticisms to levy. But it starts with actually understanding the laws governing asylum seekers and the roles of Congress and the President.

    Comment by Pundent Tuesday, Jan 16, 24 @ 4:14 pm

  29. There is no open border . Period. Thousands are detained by the Border Patrol. The fact we can , as a nation, come to a consensus on immigration policy mostly rests with the GOP. The actions taken by Abbott go beyond any decent human standard. Period

    Please identify the law these asylum seekers are blatantly breaking. Because I’m not familiar with the specific law of which you speak.
