Rate Mike Bost’s first TV ad

* We’re coming late to this because the ad was released during the break. Press release…

Congressman Mike Bost’s campaign released its first television advertisement of the 2024 election cycle this week. The ad, titled “People,” will air district-wide on broadcast and satellite television, as well as on streaming services.

* The spot

* Script

Mike Bost fights for Southern Illinois.

Mike fought to open international markets…and to protect us from China’s unfair trade policies.

Mike fought and won to get more invested in rural broadband.

Mike fought to get better mental health services for Veterans. And more job opportunities when we came home.

When it comes to our guns, no one’s a stronger supporter than Mike Bost.

Mike will finish the wall and keep the cartels out of America.

Mike Bost.

Conservative fighter.

Mike Bost gets results.

BOST: I’m Mike Bost and I approve this message.”

  1. It’s good. (Although the thought of him “finishing” the wall is kinda funny.)

  2. F.

How about discussing things that Mike Bost really did.

Like voting against certification of the last presidential election.

Or, refusing to hold town hall meetings because someone might be mean to him.

The first challenge Bost has had in nearly three decades and it comes from Darren Bailey.

    Good frickin’ grief.

  3. I thought Pink Floyd finished The Wall in 1979!

    Is this thing on?

  4. Bost gets results. His gun lawsuit got results

Comment by Rabid Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:25 pm

  5. Love that he is wearing his grandsons blaze orange vest.

Tell me you never hunt without telling me you never hunt.

    Poser.

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:36 pm

  6. It’s better than Bailey’s but that’s not saying much. D+

Comment by Radical Moderate Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:40 pm

  7. F-

There are no roads or bridges that need fixing in his district. What about the meth labs?

Comment by Jerry Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:46 pm

  8. It is a B.
Solid opener. Touches what it needs to touch.
Farmers, Veterans, Cops, Internet access, guns, the Wall….

Grading it an F is ridiculous. He’s not running in NE Illinois. The voters that will decide this primary didn’t want him to certify the election. If you think that’s a negative in this race you don’t know the GOP downstate primary voter.

Remember they tried to use his tirade on the House floor against him the first time he ran and it turned out the people in the district loved he yelled and screamed at the Speaker.

    Comment by Frida's boss Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:53 pm

  9. When Mike is in DC, he is seen wearing a three piece suit. Honestly, it has always seemed odd for a small town guy from Southern Illinois. I can’t help but notice he’s not wearing one in this ad. Maybe it doesn’t resonate here at home but makes him look all fancy in DC?

Comment by TheSouthern Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:53 pm

  10. ===turned out the people in the district loved he yelled and screamed at the Speaker. ===

Yep. Now compare that to the tone of this ad.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:55 pm

  11. Cartels. lol.

Comment by Henry Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 1:59 pm

  12. The last Illinois guvnor wore carhartts and dropped his “g’s” so he could appear folksy and not a wealthy elitist from Chicagos North Shore. Just an observation.

Comment by Jerry Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 2:09 pm

  13. Rate the ad B. The ad covers issues that relate to folks in his district. It reminds voters that he has been working for them in Congress. The ad reviews issues like jobs, veterans, trade policies, and broadband access. All this is a positive for Bost. .

    Comment by Rudy’s teeth Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 2:14 pm

  14. I’d give it a C. He looks and sounds like the guy managing the plant in town. His opponent is threatening to shoot anyone who tries to take his gun. And I think the voters identify more with the latter.

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 2:21 pm

  15. I have no idea how to rate political ads because I generally just zone out when they come on. But like most people who comment here, I’m already a decided voter, and ads don’t impact me at all.

But I’ll never stop rolling my eyes as hard as I can when GOP politicians strut around all proud of bringing projects and infrastructure dollars to their districts when the vast majority of their own party consistently votes against those projects.

Comment by Homebody Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 2:29 pm

  16. =Grading it an F is ridiculous. He’s not running in NE Illinois. =

    This is true.

I will give it a SOuthern Illinois C.

It hits some major points, but a bit too softly.

    What is it missing?

-Mention of the war on christians
-Didn’t shoot anything with an AR-15
-Didn’t call Biden family the “Biden Crime Family”
-Didn’t talk about J6 convicts as political hostages.
    -No weaponization of government talk.
-Just generally a little too soft.

    It is a suburban metro F .

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 2:37 pm

  17. To underscore JS Mill’s analyses, it’s an establishment Republican ad. And his opponent has labeled him an establishment Republican. And that’s not a compliment in this district.

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 2:43 pm

  18. The ad is a B. However what matters is the money behind it. Bost has 1.5 million on hand, and probably a million in PAC money that will come through before election day. Bailey has 150 grand and his Facebook page. Additionally, Bost has been racking up endorsements from those close to Trump. Which tells me that Donald ain’t gonna be flying in for Beatle Bailey. If Trump stays out, Bost can probably pull this off, mostly because Bailey can’t compete on the air.

Comment by James Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 2:46 pm

  19. C-. Feels generic, like the RCCC used its cookie cutter ad formula to produce an innocuous ad that could be for almost any GOP House incumbent. Not sure this is going to move the needle much for him.

    Comment by 47th Ward Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 3:17 pm

  20. If Trump stays out, Bost can probably pull this off, mostly because Bailey can’t compete on the air.

Trump’s gonna be a bit busy in courtrooms for the rest of 2024. I highly doubt he will even remember who Darren Bailey is.

Comment by The Truth Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 3:28 pm

  21. Of all the races I’m watching this spring, this is the one I’m most fascinated with. Two well-known Republicans, both very MAGA, trying out-Trump each other.

Personally I can’t imagine Bailey being anything more than yet another screaming idiot in D.C., but I’m not in that district.

    Comment by Just Me 2 Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 3:55 pm

  22. ===He’s not running in NE Illinois.===

But he IS running in Illinois. Things in the ad that might raise questions Bailey can use against him.

Bost is the “establishment” candidate, with their $$ to CGI-out the name of the sheriff’s department in the patch (& on vehicle) at 0:22; patch at 0:24; and patches at 0:26. Anyone recognize the officers / shape of the patch / squad car? Are they even active officers?

Comment by Anyone Remember Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 4:41 pm

  23. What did Bost do for his local area since has been elected? Bring more employers and jobs to the area, bucks for roads/schools/tourists/healthcare? The wall and the cartels… how is he gonna do that? Nice generic slogans that fill 30 seconds of space with nice sounding people. Seen this ad forever.

Comment by zatoichi Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 4:51 pm

  24. Town hall meetings? Bost has been visible for years in his district, attending various organization/board meetings, making comments, and staying afterwards to listen to residents’ questions and concerns. And this effort long precedes the challenge from Bailey. That beats the heck out of election cycle town hall meetings.
Three piece suit in Washington? The House has a dress code.

Comment by Motambe Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 5:23 pm

  25. If Bailey wasnt his apponenet he’d lose.

Comment by flea Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 5:25 pm

  26. opponent.. sorry

Comment by flea Wednesday, Jan 10, 24 @ 5:27 pm

  27. The problem is, his opponent is running on emotions and one issue is dominant. Voters now are accustomed to voting on emotion. This stirs no emotion whatsoever. It’s a good responsible ad in different times that addresses multiple issues. Its my kind of ad, but my kind of ad doesn’t win elections or at least not in the southern quadrant.

Comment by Smithers Thursday, Jan 11, 24 @ 1:31 pm

  28. And remember, Bailey isn’t running for Governor here. Go to a parade in the 618 area code when his bus rolls through and you get the feel for the kind of support he has south of I70.

Comment by Smithers Thursday, Jan 11, 24 @ 1:32 pm

  29. The inclusion of law enforcement probably offers mixed results too. While many conservative voters prop up law enforcement and public safety, others will think of those are the people making me register my guns. I’m talking about their perception, not my view of things.Whether they’re ISP or not isn’t considered.

Comment by Smithers Thursday, Jan 11, 24 @ 2:28 pm

  30. How about taking credit for Bide
n achievements, Mike has done nothing except kiss the former president’s tush, so all he can do is try to remember his own name.
