*** UPDATED x1 *** Dems avoid a fight as Daya drops out

Posted in:

* Background is here if you need it. From Ishan Daya, now a former candidate for 32nd Ward Democratic Committeeperson…

“After internal deliberation, we have decided that we’ll be sunsetting the campaign today. We were able to do in 15 days what those already in power weren’t able to do over 3 months – get signatures from over 2,000 people that wanted to see change for a more progressive and democratic ward. I’m wishing the best of luck to the candidates that file for their write-in candidacy for the March 19th election, and will continue to organize our neighbors to drive pressure towards our electeds on building a more inclusive ward.”

I was told that the basis of the petition challenge against Daya was that he didn’t number his sheets.

*** UPDATE *** Ald. Scott Waguespack…

“I am pleased that Mr. Daya has decided not to pursue this effort further. I am running a write-in campaign for re-election as 32nd Ward Committeeman on the March 19, 2024 Democratic primary election ballot. I’m proud to have the continued support of residents of our community to keep building a vibrant and strong local Democratic Party that supports progressive candidates up and down the ballot.”

    It’s corporate-speak. They never “hire” anyone, they “onboard” them. They don’t “fire” people; they “outsource jobs”.

  4. Numbers on pages matter more than the signatures of registered voters?

  5. ===Numbers on pages matter more===

    No, but the law was written in a way that makes following all the many rules imperative.

  6. No matter your opinion on the Hamas-Israle war, the Cook County Democrats don’t need a committeeman who ripped down posters of innocent people taken hostage by Hamas. Good riddance.

  7. Really silly to have something as minor as page numbers get someone thrown off the ballot. We need to make it easier for people to run for office.

  8. LOL corporate speak. that is so bizarre. thanks for the chuckle, JoanP.

    This comment is silly. You must be able to recapitulate the signatures. This is like having a series of houses with no numbers or streets with no names.

  10. Having elected officials who read the statute from time to time is also important Jeremy, I agree with your concern but don’t think this is the proper avenue.

  11. Sounds like the Dems won that fight!

  12. @AvoidAFight not sure this means we avoid a divisive race here. There’s so much happening on the ground in the Toro-Guzman Senate race, I wouldn’t be surprised if the uber-progressive crowd is already looking for their own write-in candidate.

  13. ===uber-progressive crowd is already looking===

    They’re kinda busy trying to pass a resolution instead of running the city. /s

  14. I remember when Waguespack was considered progressive just a few years ago. His ineptness as committeeman really opened him up for a challenge next election as alderman from the far far left. Pretty funny

    Comment by Regular democrat Monday, Dec 18, 23 @ 5:25 pm

  15. Waguespack is more likely to be the next mayor than get taken out by a “far far left” candidate. People of that political inclination got the chance of a lifetime in the spring and mostly managed to blow it in less than a year and the prospects of a rebound are dim.
