Beautiful colors on the trees in some places around Central Illinois right now, but I wonder if the quick temperature drop expected Sunday will end that early.

It’s way too early to be making political points off a mass murder. An alternative might be to say a prayer for the families.

Statistically speaking, in any 36 hour period, there’s a mass murder in America, and nowhere else in the world is that “hourly” rate statistically existing.
When is that “36 hour” window that won’t be inappropriate?

The question herein might be to ask what our new PICA laws might look like if they were in effect there.
The image I saw of the killer and his weapon clearly indicated a weapon intended for human massacre. The clip looked to hold more than 10 rounds. He had a few extras in his cargo pants pockets. Nothing about his appearance suggested he needed such a weapon for the purpose of hunting deer, moose, elk, black bear, etc. Such a weapon is unnecessary for any sport shooting.
That weapon is the kind Illinois is now asking citizens to register. If Illinoisans believe they have a right to be prepared for foreign attacks on our soil, or for a government rebellion against the people, fine. But that does not mean you should not have to register your possession of such a weapon in the meantime while we wait for such events. It does not mean that the State Police should not know who owns weapons specifically designed for a war (that has yet to happen on U.S. soil in any of our lifetimes and longer).
I also like to think that if there was prior knowledge of a fantasized attack on a military armory, and knowledge of a person hearing voices, that our red flag provisions would have prevented what is now occurring.
And yes, I am praying for the victims who survived, and the families and friends of those needlessly killed because some people believe our government is the problem and thus they are entitled to be prepared to kill dozens of people.

Is it long enough after Highland Park? Or Sandy Hook? or Columbine?
If the “appropriate time to talk about it” counter gets reset every time a tragedy happens, then nothing will ever happen.
Almost seems like the people who make this argument know that, and are doing it intentionally.

I was born into a hunting family. I have my hunter’s safety license. My high school sport was trap shooting. I firmly believe that clips that hold over 10 rounds should be illegal. If you need more than one or two bullets to hunt and kill standard animals, you need more practice at the range before you hunt. The more bullets that are in an animal, the less usable meat there will be.
I grew up doing active shooter drills more than tornado and fire drills. This madness needs to stop, and it needs to start with common-sense laws like restricting clip sizes and quantities.

My comments were not intended to contradict your statement. Your are right to indicate we should temper our words at this time our of respect for those who will be triggered by such events. We should grieve and always allow others to grieve as well.
I simply believe that for some like we people in Illinois who are far removed from the actual event, part of our grieving involved knowledge that this sort of event could occur here too, and the knowledge that our laws here cannot prevent such occurrences completely.
I pray our laws can reduce the number of such events and the number of deaths during such events.

My 10 year old grandson came in after school yesterday and we were talking about the Bears second only win this season . He looked at me with very serious eyes and said, it’s hard to be a Chicago sports fan……so true.

Please site a reference. Per the attached article from the Daily Herald. According to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University, there have been 36 total mass shootings in the United States to date. Obviously far less that one every 36 hours.

Today is “Day 299” of 2023
As of today, according to the link, there have been 565 mass shootings.
That’s ~ 1.8 a day, far more frequent than every 36 hours…
Still don’t think a parsing of words will make anyone better if there was a mass this or that… and if they are happening more than one a day, when exactly is the day we can talk about this, there’s no off days apparently.

I was wrong. It’s important to the facts.
I think what equally troubles me is I had read somewhere about “roughly 36 hours” on (now corrected) mass shootings. It was overwhelming, thinking “wow, every 36 hours”
Getting wrong that in every 5 day work week, there are statistically 9 mass shootings. Nine. In any five day period.
Getting wrong the sheer count, it is a reminder to myself to check my own facts because when I don’t, I find myself shocked, and in cases like this shocked at my under count is staggering.
So, apologies, to both term and frequency for fact.
