Illinois State Library closed after emailed bomb threat

Posted in:

* From the Illinois Secretary of State’s office…

At approximately 9:30am, a bomb threat was emailed to the Illinois State Library. Out of an abundance of caution, the library was evacuated, and the building swept for explosive devices. There were none. An all clear was issued by SOS police at approximately 11:30 and employees have returned to work.

…Adding… I’m told there are no suspects as of now. But the incident “will be investigated and the FBI will be notified.”

  1. Welcome to the new normal. Smell the freedom and the parental rights of it all.

  2. Denying others the opportunity to go to a public library because of threats is the new freedom America must embrace… or else.

When you press the cultists, the only unabridged freedom they want is for guns. They will tell you that freedom needs to be curtailed, and which freedoms have a measure.

    Vote accordingly

  3. It has been 28 years. 28 years since a right wing terrorist murdered 19 children and 149 others while injuring hundreds of other innocent people. With those deaths on the hands of right wing and Republican provocateurs their rhetoric softened or at least became a little more responsible.

This is their opportunity now to take ownership and responsibility for what their political posturing has supported and enabled and shut it down. Shut it down before they inspire the next mass murderer to an act of terror in their name and rhetoric.

  4. I remember a time when the right hated civil disobedience and protests that sometimes created inconvenience. This is not that. Tyranny by the minority.

  5. When libraries become targets for domestic terrorists, our democracy is already vanishing before our eyes.

Is this really what the right wing wants? Will anyone in the ILGOP condemn this? How long will people remain silent? How much more evidence do reasonable people need to understand we are in crisis as a civil society? Self-government is an experiment, and threats like these are evidence that our experiment can fail.

  6. Drag queen story hour in libraries: bad

    Bomb threads in libraries: good

  7. Real macho, red blooded, ‘merican tough guys here. More like a bunch of creepy cowards, hiding behind anonymous bomb threats.

  8. NN beat me to it (exclamation point).

Terrorism is okay, so long as their clothing conforms to traditional sex stereotypes.

Narrator: Trump wanted to end American Democracy.

Oh - Sue -, the more you reveal yourself the more you explain to others how much you distain you have to the American experience

I’ve already stated, often, what my take is to the border situation, as late as yesterday in fact.

There’s nothing more important than saving American democracy from those bent on letting pass what happened January 6th and ignoring thereafter those willing to keep the United States free from its overthrow by cultists.

There are two sides, - Sue -

    There’s no ambiguity

  13. I look forward to see the mug shot and perp walk of the person(s) who did this. A threat sent via email should be easy to trace back. I won’t hold my breath, though…

  14. I can see why these types hate libraries as they don’t seem to do much if any reading.

Comment by Big Dipper Friday, Sep 22, 23 @ 1:48 pm

  15. It can be hard to trace back email not impossible. You can, of course get burner accounts from google, yahoo etc. That might have been easier a few years ago but there’s enough sloshing around. You can also hack into someone else’s email or spoof the sending address.
The first thing to do would be to get the receipt info of the email and subpoena the records of that server. If you can get an ip from that, then you’d have to follow that. Commercial VPNs aren’t really anonymous given enough resources.
I hope they find them, but unless they are really stupid, it will take time.

  16. A threat sent by email makes it a federal offense, right?

Comment by Teacher Lady Friday, Sep 22, 23 @ 2:01 pm

  17. JoanP - You and I both knew it would turn out to be a bomb threat. I was guessing a phone call, but an email threat is no less a threat.

Comment by Teacher Lady Friday, Sep 22, 23 @ 2:04 pm

  18. What the heck, have ALL these terrorists used VPN’s or otherwise hid their tracks so well that NONE of them have been tracked down yet? This has been going on for weeks. Maybe I’m too impatient but I wonder just how much resources are going into these investigations.

Comment by lake county democrat Friday, Sep 22, 23 @ 2:40 pm

  19. This needs to stop. Period.

I don’t care who is doing it or why. Ten years in hard labor ought to be enough for the perpetrators.
