Local church seems to have been caught up in a ponzi scheme, and now the federal receiver is doing a clawback of all the money donated from a now defunct shell company to the church - to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars - 300k needed by nov 15 or they start force-selling assets(bought with those donations).
Seems like some more funds were used to gain tax breaks by donating to religious education under the invest in kids act - to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars as well.
No wonder a certain segment is so insistent on bringing back the Invest in Kids act. Looks like you could dump unlimited stolen money into it and get a tax credit for doing it.
A few other religious schools are involved as well, including a Joliet Diocese High School where stolen funds were used to pay for tuition.
It’s a fascinating story, and an eye-opener on just how little checking religious institutions are doing on the money coming to them, before they sign off on donations and give those tax breaks.
If Invest In Kids act ever comes back in some form, is absolutely has to have a requirement of verifying donated funds are not illicitly gained before any tax credits are issued.

After more than 10 years, it appears that the drop ceiling in Union Station near the gates is going to finally be repaired/replaced.
You have been able to see the rusty pipes for a long time.

Here in the north, we’ve begun counting how many days of overcast sky without a drop of rain. It’s been about two weeks, I think. But the fall-ish temps are welcome.

Fascinating report by great cities institute illustrating demographic voting patterns in the 2023 Mayors race.
“It almost looks like it’s the gentrifiers that were voting more for Brandon than the longtime Latino residents in that particular ward,” he said. “Even though the city is broken up about a third [white], a third [Black] and a third [Latino], the white community still has much more say over who gets elected just by the fact that they’re turning out at a much higher percentage.”

People talk about unionization and complain about comp time. Mapes was notorious for adding or detracting days off staff’s comp time based on whether he liked you or what your connections could offer the him or organization.
