Reyes slating push falling flat

Posted in:

* Politico this morning

U.S. Reps Chuy García and Delia Ramirez are endorsing Jesse Reyes for Illinois Supreme Court. The endorsements come ahead of slating this week by Cook County Democrats for the 2024 election. The county Dems will also consider Supreme Court Justice Joy Cunningham for the post. Cunningham, who is African American, was appointed to fill an empty seat in December and now must run outright. The Supreme Court and other judicial seats will be slated today.

* As should be expected, that didn’t work out so well. 80 percent of the weighted vote went with the incumbent Black woman on the subcommittee…

Cook County Democrats will slate incumbent Supreme Court Justice Joy Cunningham for the Democratic primary for the court. Latinos pushed hard for them to back Appellate Court Justice Jesse Reyes, but he has once again been passed up. 80% of weighted vote for Cunningham #twill pic.twitter.com/wuTrTURx7I

Some of Chicago’s Black and Brown political leaders have been fighting over migrants, non-citizen police and the remap. Now this.

…Adding… The tweet I relied on wasn’t quite accurate. This was a subcommittee vote. That subcommittee doesn’t have a lot of Latinos on it. The full endorsement is tomorrow. The headline was also changed.

Thoughts?

  1. the bigger problem for Reyes is not that Cunningham is Black, it is that she is very well qualified. Her experience is well beyond his. find someone who is good at smart and does not specialize in campaigning.

  2. If this is about race (welcome to Cook County and America) then Garcia and Ramirez have the stronger point. Per the census bureau Cook County is 23% black and 26% hispanic. Illinois is 14% black and 18% hispanic, further strengthening the case of a hispanic candidate.

  3. Subcommittee or not, Cunningham will be slated by a comfortable margin.

  4. Reyes is an incredibly hard campaigner. He and former MWRD member Debra Shore were probably to top two mileage folks year-round.

I haven’t looked at his past raising efforts but so far his money game is anemic compared to Cunningham’s.

Cunningham appears to have everything going her way so far but I won’t be surprised by a spirited debate tomorrow and even a push for an open primary.

  5. Doesn’t look like Chuy has any influence for a Latino Supreme Court Justice. Amazing…. Latinos seem to lose again.

  6. I agree that a Latinx Justice is overdue, but Reyes is unimpressive in his current role so not deserving of a promotion.

  7. To the post,

The question to this is if the replacement is an upgrade to the bench where this slating of a challenger over the “incumbent” appointed Justice, where the politics and the reason isn’t merely to make the politics work.

I’m a “run ‘em all” kind of person, and with slating a major hurdle/advantage in races, I’d like to think no matter how this goes, a spirited race for the seat will take place.

  8. @Big Dipper - couldn’t agree more.

Also, I’d love to hear him articulate one single reason for being elected other than putting a Latino on the Court. He never answers the question, why HIM and not someone else? I don’t think he has an answer for it.
