Just 68 years ago, Emmett Till was only 14 when he was lynched by white supremacists.
The creation of this monument is an important step in remembering his and his mother Mamie’s stories and the legacy of the horrors of racism.

Made me ill the first time I looked thru these, and what’s so terribly sickening is this continued and uninhibited empowerment and emboldening to writing such vile and being proud to say such things.
There’s no shame, they want the attention and cheering from the absolute worst of society, and to be embraced by those just as vile.

Oh, please. I’ve been on that site for years and years. But I tend to stay away from national stuff. State politics rarely brings out this huge amount of racist intensity. A few comments here and there. Maybe even a dozen or so. But this is wild.

There are many differences between this site and Twitter but one of the bigger ones is that Rich actively moderates the comments.
It takes time and it probably makes some enemies but thank you, Rich, for making the effort. This site is better for it.

You see that stuff and wonder why anyone advertises on X anymore. I wouldn’t want my brand within 100 miles of that.
You knew these people were out there, you would encounter them IRL, but the ability to demonstrate these feelings to the wider world (and the comfort in doing so) is pathetic.

Twitter was on the verge of disappearing just before it finally took off. I suppose now is the time for it to actually disappear.

Agree. Thankfully, Threads is running, where there is much less of this kind of “stuff.” Elon bought Twitter to force horrible views on people. Guess what? People and advertisers don’t have to stay there and be subjected to this.

This is unrelated, but I do miss the institutional knowledge of commemters on here for State Government. That’s what I’ve noticed on the comments here in my opinion compared to five years ago. I learned alot just from reading the comments. I know some have retired and others unfortunately passed away, but hopefully more people can come in and fill that gap.

Racists: it’s a monument to a 14-year-old boy who was tortured to death because of a false accusation. But you racists got to come out of the shadows and cry about all the (pretend) unjust stuff done to white people? Are you really so thin-skinned that you can’t just leave it alone?

Read it and took one for the team. Ugh. The ugliness is out in the open now, legitimized politically and socially over the years. Now it has a major social media platform, one that is thankfully being diminished by people leaving or spending more time on other sites.
Politically in Illinois, it just about guarantees strength for Pritzker and Democrats.

To the post, what’s disappointing is that saying the quiet part out loud, on social media like this, is the encouraging that goes on to be vile, to be angry, to show power of ugly words that should be powerless but aren’t to those ugly folks in these times.
It’s the loud two dozen that think they speak for “millions”, and in places they seemingly do, and that’s disappointing.

Maybe it’s progress that people do it anonymously on Twitter because that type of thinking is nowhere near as common as it once was.

20 years ago there were a couple dozen or so online communities that were amazing to be a part of (mostly as a lurker), but once Facebook and Twitter came around and replaced those communities for a “one stop shop” arrangement I find it’s really hard to find ones like that. For me as of right now, this is one of only two that I look forward to reading the comments. Obviously Rich Miller has a lot to do with that, so I guess I’m just saying thanks!
