*** UPDATED x1 *** Site of planned Danville abortion clinic allegedly rammed by protester

Posted in:

* News-Gazette

Danville police are declining to release information about damage recently done to a building identified as the future site of a new abortion clinic.

“Due to coordinating efforts with federal authorities, we will not be releasing information at this time,” said Danville Deputy Police Chief Josh Webb. “The initial release of information will come from either the FBI or the U.S. Attorney’s Office once they have a press release prepared.” […]

The property was sold in March to Indianapolis-based McGhee Investment Group, which has the same address as Clinic for Women, an Indianapolis abortion provider. […]

Damage done to the Danville building followed a May 4 passage of an ordinance by the city council that would ban the shipment of abortion pills and other items intended for abortions.

More from the alleged suspect is here.

*** UPDATE *** The News-Gazette has updated. Was he trying to be a suicide bomber?

Philip J. Buyno was charged with terrorist threat, burglary, conspiracy to commit arson, attempted arson and criminal damage to property in excess of $10,000.

According to a court filing by Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy, Buyno “intended to cause or create a risk and created a risk of death or great bodily harm by using his vehicle as an incendiary device to burn down the building” at 600 N. Logan Ave., Danville.

The filing also states Buyno drove a vehicle loaded with flammable material into the building at 600 N. Logan, intending to damage the building by fire.

  1. This is the direct result of the Mayor and city council’s obviously unenforceable ordinance. They wanted to signal their base…and they did. I’m glad nobody, including the driver, was hurt.

  2. I am glad his terrorist plot failed. I wonder if he’d seen too many movies where cars explode on impact, or it was a more sophisticated attempt that fizzled.

  3. The pro-life crowd strikes again.

    Instead of doing something positive like adopting an unwanted child, or even better, adopting an unwanted special needs child, these hate-filled yahoos resort to violence.

  4. Another self-proclaimed righteous warrior fails to see the irony of their actions.

  5. It has been my sincerest worry that Danville is going to turn into what Pensacola was in the 1990s.

    For those not familiar. Dr. James Gunn was shot in the back 3 times by a protester. One year later, in the same town, Dr. John Bayard Britton was shot and killed by a (former) minister. His directly stated inspiration was the killing of Dr. Gunn the year before. The words of the killer offer a glimpse of the chilling reality of what happens when religion is involved;

    ”I’m willing and I feel very honored that they are most likely going to kill me for what I did.”

    The most famous, George Tiller, was murdered in Kansas after 3 other attempts on his life. He was shot point blank in the side of the head - in church. One of the previous attempts on his life was done by someone who later admitted to vandalizing and trying to burn down clinics.

    This is what has been activated in Danville. I don’t think the mayor who was smiling and playing politics fully grasps the enormity of the road he has sent the town down. This is going to escalate, because even the death penalty was seen as a reward for this behavior by those who would commit it, not a punishment. That’s what the stakes are here.

  6. === They wanted to signal their base…and they did ===

    If any anti-abortion politicians are opposed to terrorism against clinics, now would be an excellent time to say so. They can choose to “signal to their base” for or against terrorism, today. I doubt it will happen though.

  8. Religious zealots using violence to achieve their goals. Tell me how this is different from Al Queda or the Taliban?

  9. I assume there is already a gofundme page set up for the defense /s?

    Sad we add women’s health care clinics to the list of buildings which need additional protection in the world we live in today… a list which already includes schools, churches and capitols.

  10. If you’re being charged with a terrorist threat, it’s difficult not yo see the zealots not in a cult, “just plain old zealots”

    The GOP and it’s regressing has made the country regress too, and in this instance, a threat of terror in the name of… whatever.

  11. In Republican land, he was just a tourist checking out the building.

  12. Waiting for Bailey and Miller (not related) and ILGOP to declare this an act of domestic terrorism.

    They are hypocrites so I won’t hold my breath.

  13. Organized violence against Women…2023?

    Buyno and his violent ilk are most easily activated to action when they perceive political support from public officials.

  14. clearly a deeply-disturbed, mentally ill individual; no sane person is going to do something like this
