Democrats from Peoria to Florida know just how dangerous Ron DeSantis’ “Florida blueprint” really is. Ahead of his visit to Illinois, Party leaders are speaking out against the spread of his extreme agenda:
“Ron DeSantis’ policies have no place in Illinois, and we won’t let him spread his ‘blueprint’ without accountability. From stripping reproductive rights to attacking members of the LGBTQ+ community and restricting civil rights across Florida, DeSantis has shown us that his vision for our nation contradicts everything that we stand for in Illinois,” said DPI Chair Lisa Hernandez. “Illinoisans have repeatedly rejected extremism, both in races up and down the ballot last November and just last month in school and library board races across the state. It’s clear that DeSantis’ hateful agenda is antithetical to our values and priorities in Illinois. While DeSantis callously enacts his dangerous platform in Florida, we’re lucky to have leaders here who respect the dignity of all Illinoisans, especially the most marginalized among us.”
“We here in Florida have seen firsthand the devastating effects of Ron DeSantis’s failed ‘Florida blueprint’. DeSantis spent Florida’s legislative session pushing through extreme legislation—including a more extreme abortion ban and a law that could make it easier for criminals to carry weapons—while ignoring the growing cost-of-living crisis that working Floridians are facing,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. “Ron DeSantis is shadow campaigning for president with an extreme MAGA agenda built on the backs of Floridians, and we will make sure that people in every state know how devastating DeSantis has been for Florida, and how devastating he would be in the White House.”
“The differences between Illinois and Florida under Ron DeSantis’ leadership could not be more clear. I am proud and grateful that our state’s leaders have never stopped working to uplift working families, defend women’s rights, and make Illinois a place where all are welcome and have opportunities to thrive,” said Illinois Senator Dave Koehler. “In Peoria, we believe in access to quality education, equitable economic opportunities, and the freedom to make our own decisions about how we live and who we love. It is no coincidence that the party that was unable to make any statewide gains in the last Midterm election would invite failed governor Ron DeSantis to keynote one of their largest dinners. DeSantis, who is trailing Donald Trump in the polls and has yet to show he is ready for primetime, will keynote tonight’s Peoria-Tazewell Lincoln Day Dinner and share the policies he has implemented that has made Florida one of the most restrictive states when it comes to exercising reproductive freedom, one of the worst states for health care access, and one of the worst states for teacher pay––with one of the largest number of banned books.
DeSantis has repeatedly failed to lead Florida, passing draconian abortion bans, overseeing the collapse of the state’s unemployment insurance system, delaying needed evacuations during a devastating natural disaster, and even running campaign ads during the state’s latest crisis.
“Inviting a failed governor who is at war with Donald Trump to keynote one of your largest events is emblematic of today’s Illinois GOP,” said JB For Governor spokesperson Natalie Edelstein. “Republicans are too busy fighting each other to get out of their own way and solve the issues facing working families. While they celebrate banning books and picking on LGBTQ+ kids, Illinois Democrats will continue to win elections and build a state where everyone is free to be who they are.”
DeSantis has shown time and time again he is an authoritarian career politician who has no business being in public office. From passing a harsh abortion ban in the dead of night to erasing Black history from textbooks, it is clear the only direction he wants the country to go is backwards. The Illinois GOP would be better off putting their resources into helping families across the state instead of playing footsie with an extremist who will forget all about central Illinois the minute his plane takes off.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is in Illinois. Today, DeSantis will give a speech to GOP donors in Peoria about how Illinois needs to be more like Florida.
He’ll try to pass off his racism, homophobia, and misogyny as protecting your freedoms.
I’m calling BS.
It’s up to us to show Americans there is a better way forward than DeSantis’ campaign of hate. Here in Illinois, that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.
DeSantis tried to force the AP to revise an African American studies course. I announced that Illinois will reject a water-downed course that censors the contributions of Black and queer Americans.
DeSantis signed a 6-week abortion ban into law. I’ve made Illinois one of the strongest states in America for protecting reproductive care.
And while Governor DeSantis is pushing to lower the age to buy an assault weapon, I’ve already signed legislation to ban assault weapons altogether.
Richard, if you agree we should keep being ILLINOIS and not Florida, will you chip in $10 or more today to the Democratic Party of Illinois so we can keep electing real leaders to block the GOP’s attacks on our freedom and rights?

Smart moves on the part of Pritzker. DeSantis, and the GOP as a whole, seems intent on turning back the clock decades and appealing to individuals worst instincts where anybody that doesn’t think, act, or look like you is a threat. It’s incredibly short-sided and ultimately a losing strategy. Things evolve and so too much DeSantis and the GOP. Pritzker gets this.

We’ll see if DeSantis “plays in Peoria” as they say. Smart move for him to visit a key city in the heartland. He’ll probably lead off by saying “Thank you to Illinois for sending so many new Citizens. Other than New Jersey, Illinoisans leave their state at the highest level in the nation.”

Assuming Trump declines over the next several months, who replaces him at the top of the Former GOP ticket?
I ask because I could see a lot of local folks here in West Central Illinois immediately jumping on board with DeSantis as their standard bearer.
Having simply read the transcript of the CNN interview with Trump, the insanity clearly shows through (I mean, he actually is delusional in the clinical sense).
Should a few more legal cases go against him, and Georgia initiate a suit that includes him, I can see MAGA people abandoning Trump and going to DeSantis.
I agree with most - DeSantis can never win Illinois. But I worry about most other states. MAGA is the disease, not the standard bearer.

All of DeSantis’ and Republican war on the marginalized is based on fear and bigotry, none of it on actual sexual grooming and CRT taught in grade schools. It’s a self-reinforcing loop between the base and Republicans. And it’s projection, claiming to be pro-freedom and against “cancel culture” but being the exact opposite.

To be clear, I loathe the man and what he has done and what he stands for. But I don’t think calling him a “failed Governor” is correct. The guy was re-elected convincingly and has seemingly passed all the legislation he wants, no matter how terrible it may be. I disagree with all of it - but he succeeded in getting it passed.
There are so many things you can (and should) attack the guy for. I just think calling him an “failed Governor” doesn’t land much of a punch.

The legislative record of DeSantis’ signature to some of the most far right thoughts to governing is the gift to Dems if they work tirelessly to point out all the things DeSantis signed as governor.
There’s a bright white light reason DeSantis signed the abortion bill as he did, in the dark.
Tough to move to the center when your gubernatorial career is predicated on winning a primary with cult voters.
I welcome each and every time DeSantis speaks, it’s another opportunity to highlight his terrible record for women, children, education, business (M-I-C…K-E-Y…), and human rights with asylum seekers.
He’s not “Trump-Lite”, DeSantis is “Cult Welcomed”

Disney will be just fine. They and the majority of other companies know that appealing to the narrow demographic of old and angry voters is a losing business strategy. These are not the patrons of the “happiest place on earth.” It has, and will be, a dumb strategy for DeSantis and anyone else who foolishly chooses to follow it.

Good point and that’s probably why they have a decent shot at winning their lawsuit. They had a right to state their opinion in defense of many of their customers, but the governor used the law and his powers to punish them solely for speaking up.

That is maybe the best repudiation of the desantis/gop authoritarian movement yet.
I am sure LP will not have the wherewithal to chime in on that. other than the infantile “but they started it” which was not what really happened.
It also pouts on display an emotional maturity and toughness possessed by Pritzker and lacking from desantis. Desantis lashed out when someone didn’t like his law, Pritzker never attacked Citadel or Uihlein and they did a heck of a lot more than Disney.

I did say it was a mistake for Governor DeSantis to punish Disney by revoking it’s special status taxing district the other day but the comment was blocked.
I agree it is not a good idea and it’s certainly not conservative for a Governor to meddle with business.
I think if Disney had it to do over again it would not meddle with divisive political issues.
Again you seem to think the new sex Ed curriculum that Illinois Democrats passed is popular, but only 20 school districts have adopted it, 534 have passed.

They stated an opinion. And in response DeSantis has attempted to bring the full weight of the government down on them because he doesn’t believe people should have the right to disagree with him. DeSantis won re election by 1,000,000 votes and has a super dupe majority in the FL legislature. They swept the statewide offices as well I believe.

DeSantis’ own words and thoughts to direct and individual (Disney, single) retaliation and your thinking that weaponizing government to “learn a lesson” to be quiet or directly “don’t say gay” is good… and… pointing out Illinois “opt outs”, all you’ve done is decidedly chose where you want discriminatory actions as a “teaching” tool.
To make this about the original post? Easy.
I want DeSantis to speak over and over and remind voters who he is, what he stands for, what he has signed, and who he has bullied and targeted… and why.
I welcome DeSantis to continue to speak to make himself less electable each and every event he attends… and speaks.

Less electable? There are plenty of conservatives who have not gone full Bailey who think a lot of his ideas make sense. You don’t hear many of them on this left-leaning site because they get shouted down (typed down?), or in this deep blue state, but they’re out there.

Once again you missed the point because you were too busy thinking of your snarky reply. I don’t feel at all that I’m a victim. The point wasn’t that I think this site or this state should change. There is no question which way Illinois will vote in the next election. Like I said, it’s a solid blue state. The point is that across the country, DeSantis would have plenty of support if he ends up being the nominee. And it’s not because half the country are racist bigots who want to bring back Jim Crow laws. Mathematically speaking, the odds that either party is completely insane is highly unlikely. So when I hear statements to that effect it just reminds me that that this kind of talk is just a bunch of divisive political noise-making.

I might be wrong here, but I don’t think DeSantis is running for statewide office in Illinois, or even running to win IL if he was the GOP nominee. I assume he is thinking about how to win the GOP primary in IL. That’s it. He knows he can’t win IL in the general. Everyone knows we are not a swing state. JB is doing the smart political thing by attacking DeSantis, hence keeping his profile up in case there is a “change” at the top of the ticket. There is no reason for anyone to get in a twist about any of this. It’s all very predictable.

This is utter garbage, I’ve gone over this time after time.
Illinois is a state that mirrors the majority of actual voters.
Only in 2004 has Illinois not voted in concert with a majority of election voters, yes, you are playing a victim to “majorities” and the “minority” is the GOP that can “swing” states to win an “Electoral College” election, not a popular vote, which is why the GOP won’t let go of the Jim Crow, disfranchising, electoral road blocks on a national election. So just stop this.

Illinois doesn’t elect republicans statewide anymore because the party nominees in this state, elected by the primary voters, are out of step with actual majority American positions.
It’s utterly tiring that this has to be rehashed because there’s such a lacking to what Illinois is, and it’s a “Blue State” for a most part because American policies are not in line with the 2013-2023 cultist GOP
