My guesses for a few Springfield races (even though I live outside the city):
-Langfelder hangs on by about 3+
-Lisa Badger upsets both Feger and McCarty for Treasurer
-Big margins of victory for Williams in Ward 3, Purchase in Ward 5, and Brad Carlson in Ward 7
-Larry Rockford wins Ward 4, Notariano bests Haaker in Ward 6
-Blissett is the only Dist. 186 board member to lose, goes down in Dist. 186 subdistrict 3 (endorsed by neither party), Jennifer Bandy wins a close race
-Proposal by Springfield to annex the unincorporated areas of Springfield and Woodside townships surrounded by the City passes in the city, but goes down in flames particularly in Leland Grove, Southern View, etc.
-The victory celebrations are barely over tomorrow night before more stuff hits the fan tomorrow night in City Council over the Wyndham

Wow. I haven’t heard that name in many years. He was the Dem that finally knocked out Ald. John Hoellen (a lonely Republican) from the 47th Ward City Council seat and Schulter was part of Ed Kelly’s Fightin’ 47th Democratic Ward organization. All three names were prominent during my time as a local high school student in the 1970s and many classmates landed jobs with the Chicago Park District during that era as Kelly ran the city parks.

Mayor Johnson needs to find primary challengers for Casten, Kelly, and Quigley. The only three members of the congressional delegation with parts of Chicago in their district to not endorse the new mayor.

I figured for sure Vallas would scare the older voters onto his side, especially with all the endorsements from the senior circuit. Johnson never seemed to have a cohesive campaign and the knocks on Vallas never really got mainstream traction. How badly did Paul have to mess up to lose under those conditions?

Chicago’s not gone far left.
Vallas sure seemed to be the Joe Manchin of Illinois. Says he’s a D, but hangs with Dan Proft, Amy Jacobs, AWAKE IL, wants charter schools, etc. etc.
Many people I spoke with voted Johnson with the thought that some of his ideas like head-tax wouldn’t pass the council.

Chicago Democrats need to understand who they want to be going forward, and not reach back to find what they think could be.
If voters made that statement with Johnson, then what is next is up to the future seekers, not the history buffs.

Paul Vallas was the “useful tool” of IPI, Tillman, Proft, Uihlein, Griffin, Rauner, & the Tribune Editorial Board to breach the Illinois Constitution pension clause.
He was also the “useful tool” to use get around ADA / IEPs as it relates to vouchers and non-public schools.
Maybe Greg Abbott will hire him to run the Houston School District?

Fully anecdotal here, but there was a tweet about interviewing older voters in Little Village, and several of them would not vote for Vallas because they remembered what he did to their community’s school back when.
So much of Vallas’ campaign was dependent on people not actually remembering who he was while he was in charge of something here, while also chasing money and endorsements with that big nostalgia kick. Perhaps voters have better memories than he (or I) gave them credit for.

Congrats to Mayor Elect Johnson. Him and his team ran a very good campaign, and I think the biggest thing they did well was increasing young voter turnout even though overall it is very low. Vallas was classy in his concession speech and not really a MAGA Republican.
So much of the actual government business side is managing the things that you do not expect or plan for during a campaign. The 5th Floor is never a cushy job for anyone ever. Everyone should do our best to help him.

Of the three Champaign Unit 4 School Boar candidates targeted by DPI as extreme, only one made it into the top 4 and therefore into a board seat, assuming the VBM ballots don’t change things much. The top three are have a significant enough of a lead that pretty much locks them in.
Extremism seems to be losing across the state and I am here for it.
That said, races are not being called here yet, so this could still change.

It has been lost in the weeds with the massive shift rightward of the Republican party, but this outcome of Johnson winning makes me pleased that perhaps the voters are starting to realize there are significant differences within the Democratic Party as well.

nobody talked much about which candidate you’d like to have a beer with. I might argue with him, but I’d rather hang out with Brandon. He’s talky and salty. Interesting that today Vallas voted, went to Manny’s, and then to check out his election night set up. Meanwhile the new Mayor voted, went to Manny’s, and made 15 stops to GOTV. either Vallas knew he was toast or he ran out of places that wanted to see him. and now his arrogant … is done.

Young voters turned out. Vallas MAGA flirting turned off a lot of would be voters. Vallas base gambled they could do better than Lightfoot in a city that has been steadily moving left and wound up with someone much more aligned against their interests. The DSA-ish left made a similar gamble, and won.

Surprised, not surprised by the fears - move away - doom and gloom.
If you’ve done some traveling, you might notice that the quality of life in parts of the world where they invest in public health, infrastructure, public parks, libraries, housing and education, and a social safety net, are quite nice for the residents in those places. That’s what Brandon Johnson refers to, advocates for. Yes, these have to be paid for. And we all benefit in the long run, by living in a safer, more livable city.
Illinois - austerity budgeting for decades, one of the smallest per capita public work forces of the 50 states, have resulted in a dysfunctional society. Inequality in the US has grown, as more and more wealth is clustered at the top.
I’d offer references to my comments above, but am tired from months of organizing and door knocking for Brandon Johnson. We knocked on hundreds of thousands of doors, spoke face to face with 10s of thousands of voters in every precinct in Chicago.

Congrats to Johnson. He has a tall task ahead of him but he seems to have an energy level that Chicago has not seen in some while. I am also gratified to see a teacher, especially a secondary school social studies teacher, taking a key role in Illinois politics. I’ve always felt r hat if you want to take the pulse of a city talks with the public school teachers. BTW kudos to Chicago Board of Elections on the vote counting. Textbook performance

Businesses are going to leave. Schools are going to get more tax dollars and provide lowest performances in America. Crime will stay the same, maybe even worsen due to catch-and-release. Chicago is looking very scary with Johnson as mayor.

hmmm, from very far away, this was exactly what i expected. #1: there are a lot more teachers than cops in chicago. #2: teachers are most definitely better organizers than cops. it’s not even close. #3: old white dude vs young(er) black man in chicago. chicago is the city where an old black man cried when i shook his hand. yeah, this outcome was predictable, perhaps not to old white guys, though.

Will be interesting to see how the City Council interacts with Mayor Johnson. It’s not going to be an easy relationship, but it will definitely see if the Mayor is more like Lori Lightfoot or trends more like Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. I never thought I’d think there was a step down from MLL, but here we are.

Boeing, Caterpillar, Citadel –. They left Chicago. McD’s CEO is sending out a warning on crime and how it impacts recruiting. Johnson wants to add a corporate head tax, and a LaSalle St tax, all of which will cause businesses to leave.
But I guess bc a trade magazine said differently, it must be true.

Suburban bystander here. I have no idea if Brandon Johnson will be a good mayor, but it was sure a lot of fun watching the Vallas team lose. All that money for nothing.

“So far this year, citywide robbery reports are up 15% compared to 2022, according to CPD’s latest statistical report. They’re up 30% compared to 2019. In the Shakespeare (14th) District, robberies are flat compared to last year and up 37% compared to 2019.”

The alleged “pro-police”, FOP endorsed, FOP Prez embraced candidate got beat.
Thing is, it’s an odd flex to cite crime figures and not recognize that whom the police union and their prez embraced lost, I’d also remind you that the union is seemingly fine with Proud Boys in their ranks
So… what exactly is troubling you… that crime still doesn’t make Chicago a H&%#Hole… or…
