Post-campaign notebook

Posted in:

* The Workers’ Rights Amendment is getting almost 90 percent support in Chicago’s Black-majority wards. Data compiled by Isabel…

As I told you earlier, it got abut 80 percent citywide.

* Tom DeVore apparently believes everybody is as gullible as his handful of followers…

But here’s what he said in September…

Whiner.

* Why would the GOP even try to run a comprehensive and expensive mail and chase program when its base thinks mail-in and early voting are evil and should be abolished?…

Dem campaigns had more money than Rs, real campaigns. We got canvassing back, a D strength. Ds were motivated. DNC spent a lot of money on field.

Look at how much better Ds did in the early vote than 2018, 2020. Sign of organizational strength, hustle, good campaigns. 3/ pic.twitter.com/GMz0w72EWc

Mail and chase works, as do early voting pushes. Democrat Maggie Trevor was trailing Matt Padgorski for a Cook County Board seat by about a thousand votes last week. As of yesterday, she was ahead by 481 votes.

* Well, Gov. Pritzker did give Warnock his campaign manager

  1. The Warnock thing is funny, but what really grinds my gears is the small dollar fundraising that DPI started up after Hernandez got the chair. I thought the whole point of bringing her in was to make that sort of DC nonsense unnecessary. Some have even been signed by Pritzker, which is rich to say the least.

  2. ‘Nember when Pat Brady gave Dan Proft the opportunity to be *seen* as an equal to a discussion to the ILGOP and it’s trajectory?

Proft raised his voice, used derogatory language, and basically made the whole thing a farce and made himself seem unspectacular… except to the ugly, angry GOP?

Yeah, Proft now got too big, too bright, and now actually winning and being spectacular by winning is expected … Proft 1,000% knows he (Proft) is a failure, and “now it’s all over”

    How do I know?

Easy. It’s not a tweet. It’s a surrender of himself.

===@DanProft - To people who play by the rules in blue and even purple America, you should probably make your reservations for Florida sooner rather than later.

Proft is a loser. And everyone was watching

The checks… they all cashed. Congratulations

  5. I’m pretty sure you can’t go around calling people what Prof(i)t called that Daily Herald reporter without fear of a libel suit. (Journalists tend not to sue for libel, of course.)

Comment by George Ryan Reynolds Wednesday, Nov 16, 22 @ 3:42 pm

  6. The ILGOP just got their clocked cleaned. And they can chalk quite a bit of that up to college educated suburban voters who used to vote for the GOP but aren’t buying what they’re currently selling. But instead of acknowledging that reality, they seem intent on doubling down on a losing strategy and insulting the intelligence of the voters they need to convert.

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Nov 16, 22 @ 3:42 pm

  7. The Monday afternoon tweets by Daily Herald reporter were deleted yesterday morning.

Proft, and many others, screenshot the tweets.

Usually he sticks to opinions about people which can be derogatory, but not defamatory because they cannot be objective facts, so yeah, that’s actionable and I think the press needs to start to think about acting on such claims. It allows bullies to attack reporters and news organizations are letting their reporters be vulnerable only encouraging more of this.

    Why or why not?

  11. When I first met Dan Proft, nearly 20 years ago, I thought he was a singularly loathsome human being.

My assessment was much too generous.

  12. Reminding voters early and often of your opponent’s negatives(right wing Podgorski) and your positives and again and again gets the votes in however. the mail delivers.

  13. Mr. Devore continues to behave like an amplified parody of a liberal’s fever-dream visions of an extremist, anti-intellectual clod.

    It’s “there” not “their,” Tom.

  16. The GOP is chasing a ghost if they think they can make up lost ground with GOTV and avoid the long overdue reconning on their policy and candidate recruitment.

Democrats have an 8 year head start on their early voting program. Each year the GOP gets better, Democrats are gonna get more better.

The ground Dems used to lose in the midterms, they will not have to make up in Presidential years anymore. Yes, Roe made it easier. But turnout is about creating habits, and people who get in the habit of voting every two years are much likelier to vote by mail in 2026.

You’ve handed us majorities of your collar county voters, the college educated voters, who do not need to be asked twice to vote by mail.

Our Democratic precincts are dense and walkable. Your rural precincts are sparse and barely driveable.

And most importantly: Republicans have fought every effort to make voting easier going back to Motor Voter. 30 years.

For 30 years the GOP has said that Voting on Election Day is the American Way! Voting before election day is for lazy, unamerican people.

GOP voters heard their leaders. Loud and clear. Changing their behavior is hard. That’s part of being a Conservative.

You chide Proft for his losing strategy, but you offer up another not winning strategy.

  17. =Republicans don’t have the wrong message=

    All evidence to the contrary.

I am guessing Tommy was not in advanced math as a kid.

  18. Seems to me that Proft’s ugly comment calling a DH reporter a “pedarast” would be grounds for removal from Twitter. But it appears that anything now goes under Elon Musk’s new, improved Twitter.

  19. ==what really grinds my gears is the small dollar fundraising that DPI started up after Hernandez got the chair. I thought the whole point of bringing her in was to make that sort of DC nonsense unnecessary.==

That’s her job. Small dollar fundraising is a key component of every campaign (with a few notable exceptions like JB). It gives the folks a stake in the game; they are more likely to vote and more likely to share the message. Also, JB won’t be around forever and cannot/will not support everyone; the donor list needs to be up-to-date and active for future efforts. Furthermore, that pool of money represents a certain level of independence both internally and to the folks looking in.

  20. We have a partnership in our schools here with a center that deals with battered spouses and sexual assault. The center has really good age appropriate materials. They also send a form to parents that tells by lesson exactly what they will teach and every lesson can be opted out if the parent so wishes. Why are people like Caulkins and Proft opposed to kids being better protected from predators? Dan and others have made claims similar to Proft.

  23. To Proft, and so I’m clear to my sickness to his words.

Dan Proft is an ugly and crass man, using language and that word, sneering, and in a disgusting way.

A sad, small man. Dan Proft.
