We’re not going to do a ton on the mayor’s race, but I thought you’d like to see this and weigh in.

This is a very good ad. It’s mostly positive. It doesn’t attack Lightfoot by name. Garcia really is the strongest candidate in so many ways. If I was Lightfoot , I would be concerned.

It’s not an ad, it’s an announcement video.
In that thought, it’s an A-
The themes are very “municipal”, from schools, crime, opportunities.
It embraces the hope, while talking about the bad, but not dwelling on the negative.
Having Chuy narrate, very good choice, the slo-mo was enough artsy but not too much.
Including Harold Washington and announcing on Washington’s announcement anniversary, very savvy.
Ending with “faces”, Chicago “faces”… it’s solid.

B- A bit long. A bit too much fear-based. Excellent presentation and production. “Sout’west side” yeah.
He’s a very strong candidate for this race.

It’s fine, positive, inclusive, etc. It checks the boxes.
I did think it was interesting he characterized his campaign of as continuing what Harold Washington started 40 years ago.

I thought Chuy, in his 2nd attempt for City Hall, had the right pitch and script. ‘The Mayor for All’ was unique. He did incorporate his personal but brief bio and his connection to the great Harold Washington. Interestingly in 1983 who went from Congress to City Hall as Chuy would do.
I would rate it a B+. Unlike the mayoral race against Rahm, I feel this campaign is rushed. Coming of his re-election as congressman a few days ago reminds me of when Comptroller Suzy Mendoza, right off elected Comptroller, jumped into the mayoral race and fizzled.

To me it is a C. I didn’t find it inspiring. He cited a bunch of problems. He didn’t provide any solutions. He didn’t point to anything he has accomplished.
The introduction highlighted his personal life (growing up in Little Village, his wife, his kids) which are not factors I think about when voting for a Mayor.

Positive, nice uplifting music, interesting that he ties himself to Harold Washington.

Not sure the reference to Harold works for everyone, but it got me hooked. Also Congressman Garcia is a very decent fellow and we need more decent folks in politics.
Of course, I am way past thinking I should have any role in figuring out how to run a campaign in 2023, but ready to have a slice of pizza, a coke (or maybe a Diet Coke with no caffeine) at a phone bank for Chuy.
Count me in the “in it to win it” crowd.

I thought it covered all the bases. B+. 40 yrs ago to the day of Washington announcement. Not sure where the time went. I believe he might be the guy to beat unless he runs a terrible campaign.

It’s very good. I’d give it an A-/B+ as an announcement. And it should not be mistaken for an ad.
He does an effective job of calling out the cities challenges and problems without being combative. And that could be his biggest strength. The challenge that Mayor Lightfoot has is that she did not deliver on the promise of candidate Lightfoot and has more often chosen to fight with others on issues big and small. For Garcia choosing to align himself with Harold Washington was very smart. Harold was a guy that never shied away from a fight but could also come off as a teddy bear when he needed to.

My favorite line is when he says “with kindness”. We need that badly.

Curious that earlier this week SEIU local 73 endorsed Brandon Johnson, as did CTU earlier. Did these unions not expect Chuy to get in the race? Seems like they would be natural allies of Garcia.
Maybe I’m missing something.

As a friendly reminder… Lightfoot was a 2nd, 3rd tier handicap pick the last time she ran. Who exactly knows how things will go down.
I do think Candidate Lightfoot would flat out beat this Mayor Lightfoot.

I like the announcement ad although it’s too long. It would have been such a blessing, though, for him to wait at least a week or two before inaugurating the next election cycle. People are just so very tired of politics right now and most would appreciate (and deserve) a little break. A- for the piece itself. B-for the timing.

There are over a dozen candidates already. The clock is ticking with about 3.5 months to go. If you are an unknown there is little time for you to become known in such a crowded field, especially without a lot of money. Those who have prior-acquired name recognition have a huge advantage. I discount Vallas and Wilson based on their poor performances last time. The Mayor and Rep. Garcia are the best known citywide of the rest of the field by far. I don’t think anyone gets 50% in February, but I expect those two will be 1-2 for those reasons.

Not sure what his finances look like, but I think it’s a mistake to discount Brandon Johnson at this point, given that he has CTU and SEIU backing.

I give it a B-. But can someone explain to me where Garcia’s money is coming from? Not business. Not labor. Now not the far left with Brandon in the race - or at least they’re going to split that pot on money and volunteers.

This is so true. It is such a low turnout election that the margin between winning and losing can be very small. Really a few thousand votes was the difference between a Lightfoot - Preckwinkle runoff and another outcome. Don’t ever let anyone tell you your vote doesn’t matter.

The fact that Chuy just won reelection to Congress won’t hurt him. Harold Washington was also just reelected to Congress when he announced for Mayor and won, besting Jayne Byrne & Richie Daley with a plurality in the then Dem primary.
