Today’s quotable

* From Gov. Pritzker’s presser today

Reporter: What did Senator Bailey say during your call last night?

Pritzker: He said very few words. I got on the phone. I said ‘Senator Bailey.’ He said, ‘Governor, I want to congratulate you.’ And I said, ‘Well, thank you very much. That’s very kind of you’. And he said, ‘Okay then.’ That’s the entire call.

  1. Sen. Bailey was at a loss for words? Imagine that.

  2. I’m surprised he didn’t mention that he’s a farmer.

Comment by The Velvet Frog Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:18 pm

  3. Break up texts are longer.

I do appreciate the effort. That’s not snark

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:20 pm

  4. No one can accuse Bailey of being a class act

Comment by Mamacita Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:24 pm

  5. I suppose he could have said, “thanks for all your help.”

To Bailey’s credit, he never wavered from who he is. There’s something to be said for that.

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:25 pm

  6. I’ll cut Bailey some slack. Campaigns are hard, even when you kinda half-ass them like Bailey did. I wouldn’t want to say much to the man that beat me, either.

  7. ===To Bailey’s credit, he never wavered from who he is. There’s something to be said for that.===

I agree and respect Bailey for that. He doesn’t pretend to be someone he’s not as opposed to the last ‘republican’ governor Illinois had.

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:33 pm

  8. Hey, he conceded. A lot of Republicans don’t. So credit for that.

Comment by Banish Misfortune Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:33 pm

  9. I guess that means they’re not going suit shopping now after all.

    Comment by wildcat12 Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:36 pm

  10. That’s because he wanted to get back to the reporters telling them what a terrible job you are doing.

Comment by GDubya Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:36 pm

  11. Meh, what do you expect him to say. They’re too far apart ideologically for them to say that they’ll work together, so saying congrats and moving on so no one is wasting their time with a bunch of bs that the other knows isn’t true is about the best thing both of them could’ve done at that point.

Comment by Peter Griffin Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:37 pm

  12. He didn’t ask to go suit shopping?

Comment by Highland IL Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:37 pm

  13. Regarding Bailey, I’d have to say, “mission accomplished”. He will be “Congressman-elect in 2 short years.

    Comment by Colin O'Scopy Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:38 pm

  14. He conceded. Hopefully a small start of this becoming normalized again in American elections. I’ll take it.

Comment by Baloneymous Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:38 pm

  15. Count me in the camp that is thankful Bailey made the call at all. Baby steps…

Comment by Vote Quimby Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:45 pm

  16. Well, it was short and to the point. Darren deserves credit for making the call and not throwing a crybaby fit and claiming he was cheated like a certain orange resident of the Orange State did a couple of years ago. It might have been polite to also wish Pritzker well and tell him that if he is ever down Clay County way to stop in at Bailey Family Farms for a tour and a cold Mountain Dep, but I suppose that would have been asking a lot.

Comment by MoralMinority Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:49 pm

  17. No godspeed or god bless Illinois or any of that? That’s not good.

Comment by Lurker Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:51 pm

  18. No kudos from me for doing the bare minimum. Bye bye to all that.

Comment by Amalia Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:52 pm

  19. While not exactly flowery language it seems civil and polite. Pritzkers campaign blasted Brady pretty hard in negative ads. I know politics isn’t bean bags but that seems cordial vs a F U.

Comment by Mason born Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:56 pm

  20. I’m so happy that we won’t be seeing Bailey in the cap anymore. What a waste of space he is.

Comment by Tood Aloo Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:56 pm

  21. You have to admit, Mr Bailey put alot of effort in his campaign. If he is indeed a millionaire (which is probably based on the value of the land he owns–several farmers around Moweaqua would also fall into this category), he has done much better financially than I have, and he only has an associate’s degree. I am quite sure he was a hardworking farmer when he and Cindy were raising their family–now I think his boys are doing most of the work on the farm. One last thing to remember, Clay County where Sen Bailey is from is south of Illinois Route 16 and does not have high yielding soils farms in cental Illinois do.

Darren and I do not agree on many political issues, but we both do believe in the importance of faith and family. If you could tune out his political views, I’ll bet he would be a good neighbor.

Comment by moweaqua indian Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:58 pm

  22. I forgot to add “…but not a good governor–he was in way over his head.”

Comment by moweaqua indian Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:07 pm

  23. Here’s something many of you may not consider. When you’re a person of faith and you’re doing something you believe God wants you to do and fail at it, it’s an extremely jarring experience.

I respect Bailey’s faith. He made the call. He was disappointed. Let’s give the man credit for doing the right thing, even if he was unable to say much.

Let’s be compassionate here and not kick a man when he’s down.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:15 pm

  24. Many years ago I was advised (correctly, I believe) - ‘Any ‘arm hole’ can win.
How you conduct yourself when you lose says just about everything that needs saying.’

Comment by Conusone Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:16 pm

  25. I was taught that it’s a mark of good manners to remain classy in defeat. I would say that Bailey missed the mark. I would give him a C- for his effort. It was the bare minimum.

Comment by Manchester Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:25 pm

  26. I notice DeVore has gone radio silent on FB after constant postings the last few months.

Comment by Big Dipper Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:32 pm

  27. -Hey, he conceded. A lot of Republicans don’t. So credit for that.-

Agreed. Some Democrats don’t either. Pat Quinn is a notable sore loser, for one.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:37 pm

  28. I’m surprised he made the phone call.

I didn’t think he would refuse to accept election results, rather he would slink quietly off the stage without saying anything.

Comment by Wensicia Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:40 pm

  29. At least Bailey didn’t call Jesse White and ask if he could find 450,000 or so votes.

Comment by don the legend Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 4:53 pm

  30. Well, in fairness, I don’t know exactly what you say to the winner when you lose other than congratulations. He did what he should have done so I’m not too concerned about his lack of words.

Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 5:01 pm

  31. Bailey was a mensch. He looked awful on TV, said what needed to be said, sets an example for all GOPers. Let it be.

Comment by AliceBlueChgo Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 5:18 pm

  32. I never expected Bailey (or Devore, especially Devore) to show any class given their campaigns. So Bailey calling Pritzker is more than I thought he would do.

That said, the fewer words the better.

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 5:29 pm

  33. Let it go. He called his opponent and conceded. Are we grading it by how many words now. Get over it.

    Comment by Eire17 Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 5:38 pm

  34. Two things:

    One)

    “Bailey was a mensch.”

Sorry, Alice, but that word doesn’t mean what you think it does. Takes a lot more than those eight words to be considered a mensch.

    And two)

Regarding Bailey, I’d have to say, “mission accomplished”. He will be “Congressman-elect in 2 short years.

I know this is the hottest rumor in the area but it makes zero sense. What, Bailey is going to beat Bost by running against him from the right? Good luck with that.

Comment by New Day Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 5:42 pm

  35. It’s fine. If I lost to someone whose ideology was the polar opposite of mine I wouldn’t have much to say to them either. Right now, I’m counting it a victory every time a losing Republican candidate doesn’t scream about fraud.

Comment by TooManyJens Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 6:35 pm

  36. After calling JB dangerous Bailey kind of boxed himself in. He couldn’t exactly say good luck in your future endeavors or I’m sure you’ll do a fine job.

Comment by Big Dipper Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 6:43 pm

  37. Agree that he met the minimum, and that’s OK.

Comment by Jibba Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 6:57 pm

  38. =What, Bailey is going to beat Bost by running against him from the right?=

    Uh, yes.
