Senate GOP Leader McConchie decries “rigged system”

Posted in:

* The Senate Republicans picked up one (Erica Conway Harris defeated appointed Sen. Kris Tharp), maybe two (Sen. Michael Hastings trails by a sliver) seats. So, the SDems’ super majority goes from 41 down to 40 40 or possibly 39. With that in mind…

Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie released the below statement following a productive night for the Senate Republican Caucus:

“Thousands of voters across the state have said ‘enough’ to the Democrats’ call for more power. Thanks to their resiliency, the Illinois Senate will be adding to the strength of the Caucus and will continue to serve as strong voices for the people of Illinois, who are dissatisfied with the failed policies that have come out of Springfield and want to see change.

“Unfortunately, the Democrats’ rigged system, which created some of the most gerrymandered districts we’ve ever seen, disproportionately benefits them and leaves thousands across the state without a real voice in their elections. To those people who were silenced, we will fight for you. We will be your voice when you weren’t given one. We haven’t given up, neither should you.

“The Senate Republican Caucus is ready to work on behalf of the people of this great state and will continue to advocate for policies that root out corruption, help families and businesses thrive, and keep our communities safe.”

  1. Who was left without a voice? As far as I can tell, the only people without a voice are those who didn’t show up at the polls. This cycle had more competitive races than any other in modern history. Many of the races somewhat close. That’s democracy in action.

Election deniers lost yesterday. We run fair and free elections.

    This is disgraceful

  5. I unfortunately have to agree with his complaint about gerrymandering. With the benefit of technology the carving of districts is obscene. Both parties do it when they can, and it is gross both ways.

Legislators should not be able to go into a “secret” room in the Stratton building and then use a mouse to instantly re-draw their own boundaries. I honestly can’t think of anything more corrupt than that.

I know a legislator who bragged to me he was able to re-draw his district to bring in a local business away from the neighboring district (that was represented by a freshman) so he could ask that business to donate money to his campaign fund. How is that okay?

Democratic candidates won statewide races by double digits on average. You can’t blame that on a map. And McConchie should see the results and narrow victory of his own race as a wake-up call. Seems like he’s not quite ready to learn the lessons that yesterday’s results should dictate.

Since he’s been in office every single elected Republican in Cook has lost re-election. He got $200,000 from a Griffin fund 2 months ago courtesy of Mike Z and instead of helping other R’s get elected he kept it all.

That said, gerrymandering is a problem, but I think it will remain one until there is some kind of a national solution. Expecting a dominant party, such as the Dems in IL, to forego partisan gerrymanders when Republicans in FL will not forego partisan gerrymanders is a completely unrealistic expectation.

  24. The charge of “rigged” is so so corrosive to free and fair elections and democracy itself.

Look, at some point, I hope every American learns Murray Bowen’s concept of “ self differentiation”. These election deniers and rigged evangelists are poorly self differentiated individuals. Thus when their political party loses, it’s as if their very sense of self is being called a looser. To escape this they deny fairness to psychologically give themselves an out. This is a psychological malady we’re talking about here. The same goes for the rampant usage of whataboutism and gaslighting. Those are the actions of poorly self differentiated people.

  27. == Still searching for the silent majority ==

It’s an old adage, but probably still true: Republicans need to get out of the voter’s bedrooms and Democrats need to get out of voter’s wallets.

Whichever party that can do that successfully will likely find the moderate silent majority.

Comment by RNUG Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 11:27 am

  28. Of course it’s a system rigged by Democrats

JB promised voters he would not sign a map drawn by politicians

The Map drawn by Democratic politicians was successful in disenfranchising Republicans

The Miller, Lahood and Bost Congressional districts combined margin of victory was 317,000 votes

The margin in the contested districts Democrats won

    Underwood- 17 K
    Budzinski- 19K
    Foster- 29K
    Krishnamoorthi= 25K
    Casten- 20 K

  30. I don’t like gerrymandering, but Republicans complaining about it in today’s environment is pretty rich. It might as well be one of their national platform planks. If the GA stays the course, they’ve been doing all right, and in four more years the state will be in much better shape. It would be good if they could coordinate better with JB, but that might be on him.

  40. The word “rigged” is now a trope with a vaguely Trumpian sound since he says it so frequently, the gist being that the election was manipulated or controlled by deceptive or dishonest means. Disadvantaging the opposition by mapmaking is neither. Frustrating, yes. Not in the state’s best interest, possibly. But neither dishonest nor corrupt.

  48. Here’s the problem with your logic, Mr. Leader.

You want two ideas to have equal voice and equal representation, when in fact those ideas are not equally prized.

A majority of the citizenry prefers one set of ideas over another. This has been demonstrated several times, enough now that it has produced a supermajority.

The ideas you wish to bring are not necessarily of no value. But they are not of equal value either.

If you truly wish to govern, and you truly wish for your ideas to be incorporated into the workings of our shared communities, then you must be willing to tease out what aspects of your beliefs and values will resonate with the majority’s beliefs and values.

Unfortunately, your approach only compels the majority of our citizenry to reject your ideas at face value, because you present them as alternatives, rather than possible additions to the views of the majority.

You cannot expect equal weighing of your ideas, when the people have consistently rejected your ideas at face-value.

You need to learn to work with the majority, rather than working against it.

Comment by Hannibal Lecter Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 2:44 pm

  55. Gerrymandering districts is about as anti-Democratic as you can get. It affects decisions to run in a gerrymandered district, fundraising, and rounding up volunteers, which is worsened if the district is gerrymandered against you. Good, bright candidates will almost always take a pass on running against such headwinds. Others learn the hard way and vanish after the election, never to be seen or heard from again.

I’ve run campaigns in next to impossible to win districts, and in districts where the candidate has an advantage. Big difference in fundraising, volunteers and campaigning.

    Pretending otherwise is pretty disingenuous.

In New York State where their version of their Supreme Court kicked back severely gerrymandered districts, Democrats accustomed to winning suddenly lost or were drawn into the same districts.

In Illinois, we giggle and pretend that gerrymandering is not an issue. Or we pretend that they stood a chance similar to winning the lottery that they could win.

Ask the great promiser who claimed that he would never sign a gerrymander bill into law, the current Governor of Illinois.

The latest episode of “This American Life” covered this topic in painstaking detail, using the example of Ohio - where a non-gerrymandered map was actually mandated by their state supreme court. It’s painful to listen to the tricks lawmakers used to avoid making common-sense changes. TL:DR - R’s ran out the clock and the old gerrymandered maps were the ones used in yesterday’s election to ensure Ohio stayed red.

Anyone complaining about LP and Louis Atsave’s protests should give it a listen and hear how Dems say the same thing in other states. Democracy… but within an accepted win window…

    lol

  73. Oswego, that federal case alleged racial gerrymandering. Federal Court. Not a State Supreme Court.

Nice try, though. Now try to keep up.

So, again, counselor… you want constitutional gerrymandering

Dude, you want what you want as long as your opponent can’t get what they get.

    Hypocrite to the process.

You against maps that are meet the constitutional hurdles of racial equity to voting?

    Huh.

    That’s an odd take.

You think the federal courts got it wrong?

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 9, 22 @ 3:41 pm

  76. SCOTUS has made it clear that they don’t have a problem with gerrymandering for the sake of politics. Racial gerrymandering is another issue but that may change as well with the new court.

I don’t like gerrymandering but if it’s legal then it’s hard to expect one side to not take advantage while the other side is.

  77. === I supported a court in the State of NY finding gerrymandering unconstitutional and forcing another map. ===

So, Louis, are you opposed to the independent legislature theory? You can’t crow about a state court ruling and then not be opposed to the MAGA GOP’s push for SCOTUS to adopt that theory. Otherwise, you’re showing your hypocrisy stripe.

  78. === If the GOP takes back the house, most of those flipped seats are coming from drawing new maps.===

FiveThirtyEight says Democrats came out slightly ahead on gerrymandering. Further, CNN has the house popular vote at 52-46% for Republicans. So no, if Republicans win a majority in the house it is because they won on issues (even if less than expected).

Well Louis, I suggest you give up. This is what OW does when he’s lost the argument. Roughly the equivalent of when my daughter sticks her fingers in her ears and stamps her feet. No point in arguing. Partisans are going to partisan.

    Cite please.

===I suggest you give up. This is what OW does when he’s lost the argument.===

Friend, - Louis G Atsaves - is saying that he first believe the 14th Amendment isn’t a good measure for a court to say gerrymandering is ok, but says the NY state court that allows gerrymandering is fine.

Please stop. Maybe you should pay attention better and realize hypocrisy

But it sounds like you still respect me, LOL

  81. ===Partisans are going to partisan===

Sure, Jan. I’m so partisan I want a national uniformed way for gerrymandering to work.

    Here’s your 538 cite.

===Although Republicans went into the cycle with control over drawing more districts, the number of Democratic-leaning seats actually increased as a result of redistricting. The new maps have six more Democratic-leaning seats than the old ones and the same number of Republican-leaning seats. This is due to aggressive map-drawing by Democrats in states such as Illinois as well as court decisions overturning Republican gerrymanders in states like North Carolina.===

Six seats. That’s 1.3% seat advantage? Also pointing out “overturning Republican gerrymanders”… I guess that means North Carolina, as an example, was “worse”… Illinois’ held, federal court ruling, notwithstanding.

  82. ===Republicans win a majority in the house it is because they won on issues (even if less than expected).===

    LOL

    It’s a midterm election.

What, you expected Dems to hold a slim House advantage?

If the Senate holds (statewide elections) at 50-50 or the Dems take a seat (51-49) are you going to say “well, you know, the states themselves must be gerrymandered, look at the House seats”?

    You call me a partisan?

    Physician, heal thyself.

  83. You needed three long postings saying nothing of substance in support of your gerrymandering positions other than name calling.

As you can tell in between your misplaced ridicule, I am anti-gerrymandering, period. I am anti-gerrymandering in Illinois, and I am anti-gerrymandering nationwide. I am anti-gerrymandering when Democrats do it, and I am anti-gerrymandering when Republicans do it.

I have given my reasons for it. I have run campaigns that were hopeless in gerrymandered districts and have concisely stated my position. Get over yourself for once.

  84. Oh - Louis G Atsaves -

    LOL

Three separate points. It seems reading isn’t fundamental for some.

===As you can tell in between your misplaced ridicule, I am anti-gerrymandering, period. I am anti-gerrymandering in Illinois, and I am anti-gerrymandering nationwide. I am anti-gerrymandering when Democrats do it, and I am anti-gerrymandering when Republicans do it.===

If you actually read and keep up, you would’ve read, twice, counselor

===I stated until there’s a national movement to have it for all states under the same parameters.===

    You also stated this.

===I supported a court in the State of NY finding gerrymandering unconstitutional and forcing another map.===

… while up in arms about the Illinois map meeting the VRA benchmarks.

    ===Get over yourself for once.===

You feel that the federal court got it wrong with an Illinois map netting VRA benchmarks… but are cool with NY ruling as they do.

Until it’s a national measure that equity is uniformed… this hypocrisy is normal, even for you.

  85. Yet another example of GOP electoral incompetence. Instead of focusing on actually beating Dem incumbents, McConchie whines about gerrymandering—about which nothing can be done to 2031.

People, and this includes voters, don’t like whiners. Time is better spent identifying what folks genuinely cat about and I don’t know, maybe explicate viable solutions.

Don’t be so tough on yourself.

You never answered… never… if the federal court got it wrong on the ruling with the Illinois maps.

It’s a nice day, hope yours gets better.

    Be well
