White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was blasted Monday for saying that waiting a couple of days for results is how elections are “supposed to work.”
“We may not know all the winners of elections for a few days. It takes time to count all legitimate ballots in a legal and orderly manner,” Jean-Pierre told reporters at the White House press briefing. “That’s how this is supposed to work.”
Twitter exploded as commentators on the platform expressed their dismay that many states can no longer tally all the ballots they receive by the end of election day itself.

We will have some limited coverage tonight. But any race that’s even kinda close ain’t gonna be over until the ballots are counted or enough are counted to make an accurate prediction. Illinois counts mail-in ballots received up to two weeks after the polls close and since election authorities are not allowed to count early and mailed-in votes before election day, those are often counted after the election day votes are tabulated.

Halfway through, near SW Springfield, been heavier than normal turnout but in a lull at the moment.

In my corner of beautiful DuPage County, there was a huge turnout at the local voting station. I waited in a line of about 25 people, many more than I recall seeing in the last 30 years.
Quite a few of them were younger people, maybe in their late 20s or 30s. Of course there were many old timers like me, but it was encouraging to see younger voters.

I get that election results may not be known for a couple of days or more but doesn’t mean I have to like it. But I also remember working precinct in DuPage up early counting votes waiting to close precinct with my vote counts and then driving to election party and hearing on radio my guys lost before even getting to party. I did like that either. At least now parties and drinks should go on

Received a call at 11:33 today, which Google automatically flagged as spam, leaving the following voicemail. See if you can spot the issue:
“Hi, we’re so sorry we missed you. I’m calling on behalf of Democrats in Illinois. Tomorrow is the last day to cast your ballot for this year’s midterm election, and we need to make sure everyone shows up. Polls are open until 7 p.m., and as long as you are in line, you can vote. If you have any questions about your polling location or returning your vote-by-mail ballot, you can visit www.elections.il.gov. Have a great day.”
Clueless? Intentional shenanigans? I’m confused.

The same people that complain that election authorities can’t tally everything the same day are the same people who: 1) Blast the media for “calling” races that night and not waiting until the ballots are all counted; and 2) prevent those same authorities from doing things like counting early votes before election day to speed the process.

Just voted at my assigned polling place in DuPage. No wait. Ballot printed on demand. Smooth process for me but While in the booth overheard another vote’s ballot was printed entirely in Spanish. Interesting because my ballot was English and Spanish so curious about the single language. They reprinted a ballot for him. Everyone was friendly. Overall quiet experience.

Kennedy nailed it. I think during 2020 too many people were saying because COVID it’s going to take longer to know result without doing a great job of explaining it is because the increase in VBM and EV participation.
So now, you have a lot of people correlating the wait with COVID. A good bit of those are people in bad faith trying to create doubt in elections, but there’s still a decent chunk of people that remain confused on why results may not be known.

Voted in Palatine at around 8 a.m. Sounded like I was voter 32. Think I overheard comments from the judges saying that it was a higher than normal turnout.
No problems with equipment other than me screwing up by submitting the 2nd ballot too fast, which they fixed quickly. Voter sign in this morning used tablets rather than a three ring booklet which was different and seemed to work well.
People were friendly and definitely nothing weird going on.

Yesterday morning on Good Morning Aurora podcast, Congressman Bill Foster said (and he knows it’s a state decision, not federal) he’d like to see Illinois transition into a system using ranked-choice voting (RCV) similar to Alaska, crediting the system for keeping Sarah Palin out of Congress.
Alaska’s blanket primary has all candidates on single ballot regardless of party, and top four candidates advance to the RCV general.
He thinks it’d be good for Illinois to keep extreme elements from both parties from winning primaries under current system, and he’s watching the City of Evanston’s RCV referendum today with interest.
A problem with RCV, it could be 3 weeks to a month before knowing who won a race if top vote-getter doesn’t receive 50%+1.

Handing out palm cards in SW suburbs Worth Township. I had to explain the 100 foot rule that we talked about in another thread to one of the judges. The one where you measure from the door of the room the poll is in. Not the outside door. That got me at least 30 feet closer.
Steady crowd but not causing lines.

Voted in Frankfort 13 around noon. I was voter number 250ish. There were only about 150 voters during the primary (according to one of the judges). There were no poll watchers or electioneers outside the polling place.
There are two precincts in the gym of the Mokena Park District. The election judge said people were trying to put their ballots in the wrong machine. Even though the machine would spit them out if it was the wrong ballot, the voter often would have walked away by then. She said even though she isn’t supposed to touch it, she would walk the ballot across the gym to the correct machine so the vote would be counted.

Sounds like one of those systems where the sender scheduled a mass text message to go out, but put in the wrong date.
A mistake for sure, but not necessarily nefarious.

Although I agree with RCV I don’t see it happening this decade in Illinois. If the Evanston referendum passes I imagine Oak Park and maybe one or two other areas try doing it in the next cycle or two. Chicago would then need to pass it and go through a cycle or two before serious consideration is given at the State level. For Chicago to even consider this as an option would require changing the dates of its elections given the runnoffs are usually 5 - 6 weeks after the municipal elections which doesn’t provide much time (one week tops… maybe?) to count ballots in a ranked choice manner.

Hubby voted at new precinct polling place (Chicago) and no line at all. Long line yesterday at library.

RCV might be better than what we have now, but honestly I’m not even sure about that. Aaron Hamlin does a great job analyzing the results of Alaska’s special election. Among other things, he looks at the preferences voters expressed, noting that Begich was actually preferred over either Palin or Pelota, and yet RCV eliminated him first.
He also goes to show how some voters were hurt by honestly ranking their favorite candidate first, and how some voters would have yielded a more favorable result for themselves by not voting at all.
Pretty shocking stuff, and it makes a great case for approval voting rather than RCV.

Speaking of counting votes, have there been any news reports on what order the various election authorities in the state will tally and report results tonight? Do they report EV first or Election Day ballots? Came up empty on google.

Just voted in Rock Island County, asked the judges about turnout and they said its really high and been busy all day. A lot of younger people voting I was told.

Voted in the city in the 36th ward. They gave me a sharpie to fill out my ballot. It was a “fine point”, but one of those fat ones. When I turned the ballot over to fill out the other side, I realized all the ovals I filled on the front side bled through. So I took the ballot back, had it spoiled, and filled the new one out with a pen.
I asked them why are they giving this marker as it clearly is an issue. They admitted that I was the umpteen person to have this issue, but “they” keep telling us to offer both the pens and the markers. I asked who was “they” and all I could get was “the people in charge”.
So weird. An obvious issue that can be fixed on the spot but “they” said not to do it.

went by a number of poling places in north suburban cook between 130 and 230 and pretty quiet all around. Think folks wanted to get it done by now unless they absolutely could not vote until this afternoon
