Pritzker claims his campaign spending is not excessive compared to the other side

Posted in:

* Brenden Moore

Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker outspent Republican challenger Darren Bailey more than 23-to-1 in July through September, according to quarterly campaign finance reports.

The reports show Pritzker spending nearly $38.5 million — including $15.2 million for other state and local candidates — the previous three months.

Dan Proft’s People Who Play by the Rules PAC spent $17 million in the third quarter to help Bailey.

* NBC 5

The governor has faced plenty of criticism over his prodigious spending on his political campaigns, shelling out more than $150 million on his reelection efforts.

He says that his spending compares to that done by Republicans and opposing political action committees.

“We’re going head-to-head with them,” he said. “$100 million and more has been spent attacking me. It has to have an effect on the public while they’re doing that, and it’s a tough campaign. I’m certainly telling people what I think about Darren Bailey.”

Thoughts?

  1. Dan Proft coming out against Citizens United was not the headline I expected to wake up to. Broken clock theory and all that.

  2. Even with Pritzker self-funding, Democratic fundraising is still far more diversified than the other side. That strikes me as a better metric than the raw number of dollars being spent. Uihlein’s dominance of R spending is proportionally much bigger than Pritzker’s D spending.

  3. Can’t complain about cash while cashing checks from Uihlein with “free speech” at its center.

    Proft is making well over 6-figures advising “himself” in that PAC, and now there’s hand wringing?

    Meh.

  4. If you got it, spend it.

  5. The Governor has a right to spend his own money however he wants, and he has a right to defend his record.

    I do not recall Proft or Bailey complaining when Rauner spent $89 million against Pat Quinn.

  6. Out of touch. $38M is excessive to everyone, except I guess if you’re a spoiled billionaire born with a platinum spoon in your mouth.

  7. ===Out of touch. $38M is excessive to everyone, except I guess if you’re a spoiled billionaire born===

    You are being WAY too hard on Rauner, and Rauner kept saying he wasn’t a billionaire, but really, who exactly knows, we never got full disclosure from Rauner.

    Plus, Rauner moved to Florida, so don’t worry about things. He’s gone.

  8. Over the years it seems like Republicans whine when Democrats have a money advantage but they’re mum when they have the edge in funding. So this is just noise.

    Comment by Curious citizen Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 9:42 am

  9. Does this count the money Pritzker spend in the Republican primary to pick his opponent? Ah, Democracy.

    Comment by GE Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 9:46 am

  10. ===pick his opponent===

    56%+ if the voting GOP chose Bailey over FIVE other opponents.

    Bailey IS the ILGOP.

    Own it.

  11. Republicans complaining about Pritzker spending big bucks, but remaining silent about unlimited dark money (eg, Koch brothers) is a laugh.

  12. “The other guy has more money than me, unfair.”

    Bunch of bolsheviks.

  13. Whining about how much money the other guy has.
    Another unforeseen addition to the Republican playbook, right along with we are spending too much money on education.

  14. ==including $15.2 million for other state and local candidates — the previous three months.==

    JB contributed way more than that to the Democratic Governors Association alone.

    Comment by City Zen Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 10:37 am

  15. ===JB contributed===

    I’m gonna stop you there, thanks.

    After Citizen United, any phony discussion to unfair monies is just sour grapes.

    Please don’t make me take the time to look where you defended monies spent, I’d rather not.

    Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 10:40 am

  16. At least JB owns his fortune, rather than droppin’ g’s and wearing a Carhartt jacket straight off the rack like BR did.

    Comment by Vote Quimby Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 10:42 am

  17. Funny how the rank and file have to remind themselves how much they hate Rauner to justify supporting JB. Rauner derangement syndrome is alive and well. There’s even a constitutional amendment on the ballot to memorialize it.

    Comment by Newman Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 10:55 am

  18. ===Funny how===

    Whatboutism is now not victimhood, but it’s projecting a phony victimhood.

    Illinois sent Rauner away. Rauner moved away. Illinois won

    Pretending the monies spent by Rauner, including $50 million to buy two caucuses was celebrated by some.

    I’m sorry you feel it’s funny, the hypocrisy.

    Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 10:58 am

  19. ===There’s even a constitutional amendment===

    Codifying rights isn’t funny, unless you are one who sees right usurped is fine.

    Tattling on yourself is funny, I’ll give you that, lol

  20. -Funny how the rank and file have to remind themselves how much they hate Rauner to justify supporting JB.-

    Nope. Comparing JB to Bailey is more than enough, thanks.

    Comment by Ron Burgundy Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 11:01 am

  21. ==to justify supporting JB==

    Yep. Couldn’t possibly support him because of agreement with his policies. That can’t possibly be the case. Go somewhere else and whine.

  22. Seems like their beef is with SCOTUS for gutting campaign finance reform.

    Comment by The Velvet Frog Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 1:04 pm

  23. The right wing has basically unlimited deep pockets from a myriad of billionaires who want to be feudal lords ruling over a subservient working class, but one a single left-leaning billionaire dares to actually push back, people decide to clutch their pearls.

    Comment by Homebody Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 1:28 pm

  24. If anyone has a right to complain, it would be JB’s daughter. If she’s OK with him spending her inheritance, I’m fine with it as well.

    Comment by Pot calling kettle Thursday, Oct 20, 22 @ 1:30 pm

  25. I worked for more BROKE Democratic campaigns back in the day. Its about time our side was well funded.

  26. ==If anyone has a right to complain, it would be JB’s daughter==

    After seeing her two replies about horrific agency staffing today, Honeybear would also have a right to complain too. Send some of that excess campaign money after the election to the state budget in hopes of allowing CMS and other agencies to fill critical vacancies again.
