Under JB Pritzker and Lori Lightfoot, crime is out of control. I’m Darren Bailey. I’ll end Pritzker’s no cash bail policy that’s putting violent criminals back on our streets. I’ll increase police recruitment and retention to put more officers in our neighborhoods. I’m Darren Bailey and your safety will always be my priority.

The ad buy for the 30-second spot totals $534,000, campaign spokesman Joe DeBose said, and will include being broadcast in the expensive Chicago-area TV market. DeBose said the ad is slated to debut Wednesday or Thursday.

If crime was the number one issue in the state, I’d say it’s awesome. But it’s not so I’m not sure why this would be where I’d put my rare, precious dollars.

Four weeks out from the election, and four months past the guy who set $50 million on fire with “crime is out of control” messaging getting his face ground into the curb in the primary, and this is all Darren’s got.

Darren Bailey voted against increased funding for the Illinois State Police. It’s a matter of record. There’s the response, the end, good night.

Bailey needs to introduce himself to voters, not just talk about crime.

I just don’t think the ad moves the needle at all. I think it plays to those that are already going to vote for him and that’s not the voters he needs to win over. Crime just isn’t the number one issue in the state. As others have said, this might be a good ad against Lightfoot but I don’t think it’s a good use of money in the Governor’s race.

If the topic of crime was a clear winner, we’d be hearing more about it right now from GOP nominee Richard Irvin. And I’ve yet to hear anything from Darren Bailey that remotely represents a policy whether it’s on crime or any other topic.

No call to action (vote for Bailey) or even stating what office he’s running for (other than very small in the logo)? I’d like to think most Illinoisans are aware of who Bailey is and who the candidates for governor are, but at this point, Bailey’s best hope is low-information voters, so telling them what he’s running for and that they should vote for him seems like political ad 101.
For that alone, my rating is a D, let alone the continued pushing of a narrative that has not yet shown any real traction among the voters Bailey needs to push over to his side.

Slapping a “graphic and unsuitable for children” content warning label on your own ad is certainly a bold choice…
I give this a C-. Unlikely to move anyone undecided, and it will put the candidate in explaining mode when it is pointed out he voted against increasing the state police budget.

Why?
We’re 4 weeks out. With “closing argument” time fast approaching, these are days to try to grasp at those who can still be got. This ad does ZERO to add to any groups of persons or voters that Bailey hasn’t already got.
It’s solidifying the 39% he had the day after the primary. It speaks to nothing already known about Bailey’s position(s), it doesn’t highlight any new news to what Bailey thinks is a Pritzker weakness.
In short, people are getting paid by this ad, the billing to the ad is the big winner.

Forgot to mention: the phrasing that the no-cash bail policy is “putting” (present tense) violent criminals back on the streets is fairly egregious considering the law hasn’t taken effect yet…

I would split the difference between the base and the remaining voters and give this a C. And that’s very generous since the criticism being leveled applies to a law that isn’t even in effect yet.

More Republican, “Be afraid. Be very afraid” stuff.
Pritzker’s ad about how Bailey voted on anti-crime bills effectively knocks this out.

Does he know or associate with anyone that is not white?
He voted no to fund ISP, and then says I am the one to fund police?
Didn’t his prior opponent already make this commercial, make a better argument and better commercials against crime, and come in 3rd?
D+ (because it has a parental warning at the beginning and I always bought things with that warning, I upgraded it from an F)

Yeah, Rudy’s teeth, it sounds like that except back in the early 80’s it was Darren’s father-in-law who was the principal at NCHS while Darren was a student. He talked tough too, yet mischief still happened. At least Darren was there to offer a Mountain Dep on bad days.

Forgot to rate the ad in previous comment. I give it D- for many of the same reasons others offered. The cops lined up are all white and older. Kinda says that Darren will back the blue as long as they look and think like him. Not a total fail because he doesn’t call the audience friends, just misses the mark by a long shot.

Wonder if Candidate Bailey learned to read by using phonics or only sight words. His bizarre enunciations—priority—indicate he’s never learned primary and secondary accent in a multisyllabic word.
A favorite—Bailey pronounces scho-ol as a two syllable word when it is a one syllable word.
And, this guy is in charge of FACA. And, Bailey seeks to become governor of the state of Illinois. What.
