Bailey campaign comments on migrants bused to Chicago

Posted in:

* Bailey campaign spokesperson Joe DeBose…

“The crisis at the border has a terrible human cost and we in Illinois are about to get a close up look. No city or state has the resources to handle this. Pritzker should get his buddy Biden to fix the border. Biden also owes us the resources to vet and take care of these people.”

  1. Bailey, again, successfully avoids saying what he would or could do.

Has he actually presented anything about himself or his proposed policies for anything?

Comment by Homebody Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 5:35 pm

  2. ===“The crisis at the border has a terrible human cost and we in Illinois are about to get a close up look. No city or state has the resources to handle this. Pritzker should get his buddy Biden to fix the border. Biden also owes us the resources to vet and take care of these people.”===

Narrator: A Republican governor sent less than 75 people on a bus to Chicago.

The Apostle Darren Bailey, see you in church

  3. “Biden also owes us the resources to vet and take care of these people.”
    Swing and a miss.
Texas Governor stuck them on the bus up to Chicago.
That’s the guy Bailey needs to send the bill to.

Comment by btowntruth from forgottonia Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 5:45 pm

  4. Never a policy or solution. Only attacks on the “other side.” Pathetic.

Comment by danray Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 5:45 pm

  5. This is simply another word jumble that only his most devoted followers would understand.

Most of us would not know how to react if he would ever utter a cogent statement that addresses a particular problem or issue. I am not waiting for that to happen.

Comment by illini Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 5:48 pm

  6. Question, Darren, do you think it is kind to put people on a bus without any consultation with the place to which these folks are being sent? any idea what will happen to them?

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 5:49 pm

  7. Very weak response from Mr. bailey. In addition to what Homebody and Willy and btowntruth said, if he really wants the border fixed, which he really doesn’t, he should contact Congress who has the power. Oh and they don’t want to fix it either, by the way, or they would have. I’m sure he knows all that being he knows so much.

Comment by Cheswick Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 5:50 pm

  8. Will it brings up a good point nobody wants to address.. If youre for open borders you’ll need places andcresources to accept people..where are they?

Comment by Sleek one Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 5:51 pm

  9. ===a good point===

It’s only a good point if you are addressing it as a human being, concerned for actual people.

    ===open borders===

So you’re not addressing it as a human crisis, you want “a wall built” cause ‘Merica

===you’ll need places andcresources to accept people..where are they?===

A Republican governor in Texas is deciding.

    “You like that?”

  10. = This is simply another word jumble that only his most devoted followers would understand.=

Only those who speak in tongues.

But seriously, the questions I’d ask this guy, the Most Reverend Pastor of Facebook Live are the following in this order:
    1. Do you believe that the Bible contains the literal commandments of the Creator?
    2. Can you comment on the applicability of Deuteronomy 27:19 “Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.’ ?
    3. What say you to the message of Hebrews 1, ‘ Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.’
    4. Your savior spoke in Matthew 25 about feeding, clothing, and comforting strangers. If elected, how would these instructions guide your administration?

Comment by Dysfunction Junction Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 6:10 pm

  11. Bailey’s stature grows with his supporters. With the rest of us not so much. He’s done nothing to suggest he’s capable of leading the state.

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 6:21 pm

  12. Darren Bailey: “If elected, I am going to build a wall around Illinois, and I am going to make Texas pay for it.”

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 6:23 pm

  13. Somebody should remind DeBose that it’s Governor Pritzker and President Biden. He should show a little respect for the office to which his boss aspires. Someday, maybe, he might expect that same sort of respect if he can manage to get his candidate elected to something.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 6:25 pm

  14. “No city or state has the resources to handle this.”

The way the ILGOP did not vote for the budget this year, no city or state would have resources to handle anything

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 6:25 pm

  15. “If youre for open borders…”

Once you’ve identified any Illinois elected official, major party candidate or commenter on this site who is “for open borders,” I will consider your question.

Until then, it remains strawman nonsense.

  16. Also, it took them all day to come up with this lame statement?

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 6:28 pm

  17. About the only thing Bailey has said that I agree with. Why should the border states be responsible for managing what is a crisis created in DC. If Biden wants to have unlimited migration into the US at our Southern Border- the federal govt should be picking up 100 percent of the costs- not TX AZ NM NV and CA

Comment by Sue Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 6:30 pm

  18. Should we all start calling Darren Bailey Senator Bailey so everyone can show respect for the office he currently holds?

I kid, I don’t expect anyone to treat him fairly

Immigration and crime are the second most important issues to Republican voters and Bailey is running as a Republican

Democrats are severely underwater on immigration so perhaps a dose of reality is in order

  19. What a disgraceful and heartless response. These are families with children and babies.

Team Bailey, have you ever heard of …

THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD?

Alaska elected a new member of Congress.

  22. ==No city or state has the resources to handle this. ==

He left off “for brown people”. It galls me to think the descendents of immigrants look at asylum seekers as ‘those people’.

Comment by Jocko Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 7:25 pm

  23. I for one applaud Bailey’s laser-focused determination to secure the support of 29% of the general electorate

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 7:28 pm

  24. -No city or state has the resources to handle this.-

I’m convinced our shrinking mainline Protestant congregation in our shrinking rural Central Illinois town could handle this busload of women, children and men. And more.

Comment by Stix Hix Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 7:40 pm

  25. It’s actually a fairly bland statement by Bailey. There has been complaints for a while now that some places near the border are being overwhelmed by the number of asylum seekers. I don’t know if this give us a look of the Rio Grande Valley’s difficulties so much as it will disperse what has been localized. Bailey’s statement alluding to the case backlog also seems like it shouldn’t rile people up.

Comment by Blake Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 7:42 pm

  26. You would think Darren would be there to meet the bus when it arrived to hand out cold Mountain Dew for everyone. Maybe Governor Abbott forgot to give him a heads up.

  27. ===Pritzker should get his buddy Biden to fix the border===

I thought Bailey’s Buddy Trump was going to build the wall and make Mexico pay for it…

  28. It seems nobody wants to address the elephant in the room which is the unwillingness of the US House and Senate to meaningfully address immigration reform, particularly the GOP.

Comment by Manchester Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 8:24 pm

  29. === Should we all start calling Darren Bailey Senator Bailey so everyone can show respect for the office he currently holds? ===

Another complaint heard from the party of aggrievement.

I just visited Darren’s website. Nowhere on the homepage does DB mention he is a Senator, or refer to himself as Senator.

    It says:

    “Meet Darren Bailey

A farmer, family man, and fellow citizen from rural Illinois, Darren Bailey’s conservative roots run deep.”

Here’s the irony. Darren Bailey is from Xenia. The town takes its name from the Greek, Xenos, which roughly means, “hospitality to strangers”. It was based on a belief adopted by early Christians that strangers were to be treated even better than family, because any stranger who shows up could in fact be a god, like Zeus, who had a habit of disguising himself and visiting mortals quite regularly. Thus his full name, Zeus Xenios, “Zeus, Protector of Strangers.

You see where I am going here, Right? Xenos is where we get the
Word “xenophobia,” fear of strangers. Which is what Sir Trumpsalot and his band of knights are, and what feeds their campaign.

Whether it’s Chinese students, Chicagoans, journalists, or transgender athletes, or drag queens or Venezuelan immigrants, whomever is different is clearly the source of all of our pain and troubles.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 8:24 pm

  30. Where are all these churches Bailey talks about. Shouldn’t the be stepping up to help people?

We just gave the local diocese millions of dollars of forgiven PPP loans. Not a single peep out of them on this issue.

If the US is supposedly a christian nation, as Bailey is wont to say, then were are all these christians?

Comment by TheInvisibleMan Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 9:16 pm

  31. Bailey’s comments show us nothing. He couldn’t even man up and make a statement himself, not like he isn’t on fb live daily. And Abbott is a complete coward for doing this. He uses his power and authority to take advantage of vulnerable people. Like any good christian.

Comment by JS Mill Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 9:19 pm

  32. LP, if I was the paid spokesman for a candidate for Governor, I like to think I’d try to be more respectful than, say, an anonymous commenter on a political blog. But I’m old fashioned that way.

Lemme think..Darren Bailey might well hire them to work on his farm. Speculating here, but many farmers in Illinois use migrant labor (mostly immigrants from Central and South America) to do seasonal work. It’s not a stretch to wonder if farmer Bailey relies on such labor.

Comment by Pot calling kettle Thursday, Sep 1, 22 @ 10:19 pm

  36. **many farmers in Illinois use migrant labor **•
My maternal grandfather did, and complained about the Soviet-style social security program, yet took PIK (payment in kind) payments throughout the 1980s. Please don’t expect intellectual consistency from Illinois farmers.

  37. Kind of surprised he feels there is any sort of government responsibility to ‘take care of these people’ which is implied by him calling for the government to do so.

Also Sue, last time I checked the borders are not open.

  39. Wow - anybody deal in some facts on here?

Former high level immigration official was on tonight’s news - there is an average of 7,000 people a day crossing the border illegally. How can any reasonable person possibly say the border is closed?

Chicago gets two busloads - that is a drop in bucket of what the border states deal with on a constant basis.

They’re apprehended when they cross so the border isn’t open.

  42. =Former high level immigration official was on tonight’s news=

Hmmm… Biden was holding a rare prime-time address last night after an entire week of increasingly embarrassing revelations about what top-secret and higher documents were found squirreled away at Mar-A-Lago. So I’m gonna guess that interview with the immigration guy wasn’t on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, WGN, ESPN, or Lifetime. Just a hunch. Wonder why they went with the immigration story?

Comment by Dysfunction Junction Friday, Sep 2, 22 @ 8:23 am

  43. ===Our southern border has never been more open than it is now===

And yet you link to a story about increased apprehensions.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Sep 2, 22 @ 8:27 am

  44. =No city or state has the resources to handle this.=

Net immigration in 2021 was 247K the lowest figure in decades and roughly 75% lower than the peak of 1M around 2015. It has in fact created real challenges in the labor market that relies on immigrant workers.

We are a country built on immigrants and we can all trace our lineage back to grandparents that immigrated to this country from elsewhere. Now many of those people may have been of European descent. And that seems to be the unspoken part of many of these complaints. They simply don’t like the where these immigrants are coming from. Because the majority of immigrants arrive in this country in the same way we arrive in theirs - on a plane.

Comment by Pundent Friday, Sep 2, 22 @ 8:34 am

  45. ===story about increased apprehensions===

It’s an odd flex, citing the *apprehensions* to have it seen as insecure.

    Reminds me of Yogi Berra…

“Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”

  46. unemployment is 3%. we need people to work. These are people, like all of us and our ancestors looking for a better life. Welcome them, help them find a job, and let get them the tools to work in our community. Right now, we need them.

All true, except for the fact that, for Darren Bailey and his ilk, that definition is expanded to include, “…strangers who look like me.” If they don’t look like Darren, they don’t deserve that hospitality. That’s the real Darren Bailey and today’s GOP extremists.
