Pritzker says special session will depend on if legislators can devise bills “that will meet my requirements that could get done before the new session” in January

* Capitol News Illinois

While the governor quickly announced he would call a special session after the landmark Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade was overturned in June, lawmakers have thus far not scheduled any return to the Capitol.

Last week, Pritzker wasn’t any clearer as to when he expected lawmakers to return to address issues such as abortion rights and gun violence.

“As you know, the working groups are hard at work in the House of Representatives, working on various aspects of legislation, working with advocates, listening to them,” he said. “And so we’re cautiously optimistic that they’ll be able to come up with ideas for us to be able to bring forward in a special session, or in veto session, or some of it may even be in the new year.”

On Tuesday, Pritzker was asked about session again, noting he was in favor of banning high-capacity magazines and assault-style weapons like the ones used in the Highland Park July 4 shooting.

* The governor’s full response to the question

Well, let me be clear, I am in favor of banning assault style weapons in the state of Illinois. I’m in favor of gun safety measures like banning high capacity magazines, like the ones that we saw used in Highland Park, for example, in that terrible tragedy. So I have told this to legislators. I know that they’re in working groups now to try to figure out what they can get done. As you know, in the current time period, it requires to get something done, you really have to get a supermajority of legislators voting for something. And in the new session in January, fewer. So the question is, can they come up with a compromise or bills that will meet my requirements that could get done before the new session, and that’s what I’m looking for.

The same firearms JB wants banned are some of the most popular ones sold and owned in IL. Passing such legislation would make modern sporting rifles and polymer frame 9mm pistols (most have 15-17round magazines) Illegal.

  2. They are probably reluctant to have downstate dems make a difficult vote on guns right before an election when they can just as well wait and still have the votes afterwards. The issue is, courts are moving on the gun and mag ban cases the Supreme Court vacated and it’s extremely likely these laws are ruled unconstitutional soon. I wonder if they have a backup plan.

    Data?

“Sporting rifles” or, as many know them, assault rifles may be pervasive in number but most popular demands something in terms of numbers to support what I think, as a gun owner, is a significant exaggeration.

In Illinois, aside from coyotes, will not allow rifles for hunting until 2023 (thanks to JB who signed a law allowing certain smaller caliber center fire rifles to be used for deer etc.) So not much sporting use except target shooting in Illinois right now.

Handgun owners can get smaller capacity magazines that will be compliant. Not an issue.

  5. Data ?

There is no state-specific data – but assume IL has similar firearm sales as the 2021 national data …

  6. The Governor is not in favor of locking up repeat violent gun offenders, many of whom are on electronic monitoring still terrorizing our residents..

  7. JS Mill , 2A has nothing to do with hunting. Never has.

Who said it was? Not me. But since we are talking constitution…”2A” also known as the Second Amendment was also not one of the original seven articles of the constitution.

And “2A” was about muskets. That is what the originalists and the contextualists believe.

@Donnie Elgin’s comments were what I was responding to, you should read them. But never miss a chance to say “2A” I guess.

Maybe go back and give my comment and @Donnie Elgin’s comment a read. There was nothing about he constitution or “2A” otherwise known as the second amendment. Of course the original constitution does not mention arms in any of the seven articles and the amendments were changes.Context is important.

  11. Are not most - all of the above comments avoiding the question: Why can’t a Dem Legislature Supermajority and Dem Gov get something passed - unless they really don’t care enough and/or have the courage of their convictions?
