The war with the Japanese beetles continues. I’ve never seen a year where there are so many and they are hanging around. They can and will destroy roses and other flowers in a matter of 30 mins.

Plus enable Verizon to serve them as well as the likes of Morgan, Scott, Pike, Jersey, Cass and Adams among others. Maybe even part of northwestern Madison is a Verizon dead area too. Including Jacksonville and Quincy. And even Waverly too.

It looks like inflation is starting to coming down. For Illinois, the bonus is additional inflation relief that will include tax rebates starting next month.

Some of you may remember the murders of three women at Starved Rock state park, near Utica, in 1960. Chester Weger, a kitchen helper at the lodge, was convicted of one of the murders and served 63 years in prison before being paroled a couple years ago.
Weger had some of the evidence retested. Results last week showed a hair on a glove that was from a male, but not Weger.
The problem, however, is that many people have handled the evidence over the past six decades.
It remains to be seen what will happen next. Weger confessed to the crime but later recanted and said his confessions were coerced. He is now 83 years old and in poor health.

I know no one here is surprised but employment for the state is going to need a drastic change in the near future. We have over 100 positions in Springfield and Chicago that are getting 0 applicants. And that is due to the people in Springfield are aware that a Tier II state job means that you are underpaid as well as low benefits that are just going to Tier I. Same with Chicago but now add the higher cost of living. We may need to move some offices to where employment is more desperate. Southern Illinois?

Well can’t you just try recruiting in other areas of the state? Maybe offer a bus line or two on weekends so people can go home? At least until they get settled in Springfield?

Must acknowledge I do not have an answer to the conundrum that is the abortion issue. It is painfully apparent there is no single solution that will satisfy everyone and there is no single solution that can avoid deeply offending sincere people on both sides of the pro-life or pro-choice spectrums.
Like it or not, getting an abortion or “how to” information about getting abortion is widely, though not universally, available. And with that, there will be pregnant women that will desire an abortion as well as others within their orbit, such as parents, spouses, partners, that will desire that they do so.
With that in mind, banning abortions will not eliminate them and might not, contrary to what is argued, might not even reduce the number of them. Most people, including many that are strongly pro-life, are repulsed that a woman or a child would be forced to carry to term in the instance of rape or incest. At the same time, most people including many that are 1,000% in favor of the concept of women controlling their own bodies, are repulsed by the notion of aborting a fetus, person-to-be or whatever via partial birth abortions as well as very late term—third trimester or those within a week or day of the due date–abortions.
With all of this in mind, it must be asked whether are solutions with which the middle-90% of the public can live.
Even though it requires more than generating a catchy sound bite, this is something political, media and opinion leaders should be addressing.

Found out today there will be no hog and husband-calling at this year’s fair. That’s a first in my lifetime; then again, I remember when they did that in the Hog Barns, before it became a big media thing with follow-on TV appearances on Letterman, Hardees commercials, and such.

Yes, for about 15 years where we live, but right now we’re getting some respite.
The beetles like to munch on some things better than others. In my yard, they head for the grapevine first (beans second and raspberries third). So the grape is the sacrificial plant. The past three years I’ve used the Bt for adult beetles just on the grape, and this season there are so few beetles I’ve not taken any action.

Here in Effingham County, we have had 44 inches of rain so far this year. The normal total annual rainfall is 42 inches. So we are two inches above what we would normally expect for the entire year, with four and a half months to go.
