Guess who’s really paying for Darren Bailey’s campaign for governor? You are. Yes, you are. Follow along. Darren Bailey’s taken over $2 million in government money. The same Darren Bailey who acts like he’s against government support. And Bailey got caught taking a fortune in PPP money just weeks before giving $150,000 to his campaign. So, he’s running for governor courtesy of you. And Darren Bailey didn’t even say thank you.

  1. Jettison “Follow along” and it would be a solid “A”

Nobody likes to be told what to do.

    Especially by a campaign ad.

  2. meh. weak.

    Comment by ;) Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:10 pm

  3. Solid B. Think it could be a bit punchier, and I would have led with his prior characterizations of handouts and then itemized them afterward.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:15 pm

  4. I agree. Solid A. Drop the “follow along.”

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:16 pm

  5. MrJM makes a good point. I would rate as Ouch. This one is going to hurt.

Comment by very old soil Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:17 pm

  6. A
Told the truth, which is always good in my opinion

Comment by Lurker Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:18 pm

  7. Meh, C+/B-

The message is definitely fair game, but falls a little flat without actual clips or quotes from Bailey showing him to be a hypocrite

Comment by fs Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:19 pm

  8. More boot on the neck, but ironic too. For a Governor that gave his own campaign a truckload of his inherited money that he hides from taxation in offshore accounts, drawing attention to how the Bailey campaign is being financed is pretty ironic. He can only get away with it because he knows Bailey doesn’t have the money to fight back, which makes the underlying charge of the ad…that Bailey is running some richly funded campaign…pretty ironic as well. C+

Comment by The Abyss Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:19 pm

  9. B+. It won’t sway voters to Pritzker but could sway some not to vote for Bailey by showing what a hypocrite he is.

But to be fair, he also had a lot of help in the Primary from Democrats including JB. He never thanked them either

    Comment by SOIL M Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:19 pm

  10. A Going right to money is a really good pivot from all of the social issues that Dems seem to first head to. It’s the economy……

Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:29 pm

  11. A. Simple and to the point. If you feel like you’re being talked down to by “follow along” you may be a little too sensitive for this world.

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:29 pm

  12. Flying Elvis, haha, yes! Can’t be woke about everything!

To the ad, agree with others: A.

    simple truth telling.

Comment by Alice Childress Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:37 pm

  13. Great for the many low information voters who have no idea that JB spent 24 million to pay for ads boosting the Bailey campaign

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:38 pm

  14. A solid B maybe A minus. I always love to see the hypocrisy Cut pensions cut benefit cut Chicago boy don’t touch my farm subsidies or any farm program. Huge corporate farms with low low property taxes. Of course the Governor could also point out the the Dems also helped him in the primary

Comment by DuPage Saint Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:40 pm

  15. B+.

A simple step to continue to expose the hypocrisy of “family” farmers and agri-business to come down on food stamps and socialism. As they hound the government to provide them more dollars in crop insurance subsidies, MFP, ARC and PLC payments and so on.

Agree that the message needs to be a little tighter but the work here is good and can always get better.

Comment by Cool Papa Bell Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:41 pm

  16. B

Hypocrite stuff is great, but this takes a while to deliver the punch which is why it starts out “follow along.”

Comment by New Day Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:51 pm

  17. A little more debate about govt welfare to farmers is always fun….especially when the whacks in DC want to cut food stamps. Next lets check the property tax bills

Comment by Annonin' Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:51 pm

  18. Was leaning toward a B but the “And Darren Bailey didn’t even say thank you” line at the end is such a nice jab that I give it an A-.

Comment by Dance Band on the Titanic Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 2:55 pm

  19. These mega farmers claim to be the self-reliant type and pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, but in fact they gobble up obscene amounts of farm subsidy taxpayer money. It’s about time some of them get called out. More people need to know about it.

    Comment by Rufus T. Firefly Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:23 pm

  20. It’s a B-

It’s perfect, easy to follow, no frills, blocking and tackling fundamentals.

It’s a B- because it would be far better with Bailey, in his own words complaining about “bailouts” and “giveaways”

You let Bailey be the hypocrite to his own “voice”, everything the same, yikes…

    A B- is good, but it’s a B-

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:27 pm

  21. If you are going to run an ad about who is paying for a campaign then maybe JB should tell the voters who spent the most money to have Darren win the primary. Darren isn’t my pick either but just tell the voters JB. You will still win but be honest about the primary money.

Comment by Galway Bay Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:34 pm

  22. C, but grading on a curve.

The best Pritzker ads are when someone gives Bailey a mic and lets him speak freely. Those are A+++.

Comment by ChrisB Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:36 pm

  23. ==If you are going to run an ad about who is paying for a campaign then maybe JB should tell the voters who spent the most money to have Darren win the primary.==

JB didn’t “pay for” Bailey’s campaign, though. He ran ads specifically telling people not to vote for Bailey. Republicans nominated him, anyway. That’s on them, and it’ll remain on them no matter how many times you blame Pritzker for Bailey’s behavior.

Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:48 pm

  24. For an early August ad, it’s a “B”.

This kind of ad should not run after Labor Day.

Comment by John Lopez Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:50 pm

  25. Ad Grade - - B
Agree with Abyss thoughts on the hypocrisy of Team Pritzker.
With Pritzker being among the Nations biggest “Tax Avoiders” and a person who probably pays a smaller percentage of his net worth than anyone in Illinois this is really a shameless approach that borders on being indecent, but that is the way Team Pritzker and President Elect Pritzker rolls.

Comment by Back to the Future Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:53 pm

  26. Too much gobbledygook Brevity is your friend. C-

Comment by walker Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 3:57 pm

  27. After paying for 24 million in ads for Bailey and sitting on 90 million in campaign funds for misleading ads like this one, the state of the race is Pritzker 50%- Bailey 43%, which could be just a couple of points outside the margin of error

I guess when you can’t run ads on growing the economy here or stopping the exodus of wealthy residents and successful businesses all you are left with is negative ads about the opponent you propped up in the primary.

And yet JB is barnstorming the country trying to raise his profile as a Presidential candidate?

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:05 pm

  28. “It’s a B- because it would be far better with Bailey, in his own words complaining about “bailouts” and “giveaways”

    100%

Comment by New Day Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:05 pm

  29. - Lucky Pierre -

Will you be voting for Bailey?

===I guess when you can’t run ads on growing the economy here or stopping the exodus of wealthy residents and successful businesses all you are left with is negative ads about the opponent you propped up in the primary.===

    Sounds like you support Bailey.

    You didn’t rate the ad.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:11 pm

  30. B-/C+
I doubt many will be moved by it but it widens the narrative a bit.
At the point when they say, “follow along” people’s eyes will glaze over.
Trust me on this; I’m a teacher.

Comment by Proud Papa Bear Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:20 pm

  31. ===for misleading ads like this one===

    What’s misleading?

    Thanks.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:25 pm

  32. I was prepared to not really like it…I give it an A. It offers fodder for a different group to be disgusted with him.

Comment by Sam Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:28 pm

  33. If ‘everyone’s leaving the state’ why are they *still* building luxury apartment buildings all over Chicago? Somebody’s moving in…and no one I know here can afford luxury market rate rents…

    Comment by ucity88 Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:38 pm

  34. =If you are going to run an ad about who is paying for a campaign then maybe JB should tell the voters who spent the most money to have Darren win the primary.=

Huh? Pritzker ran ads saying that Darren Bailey was too conservative for Illinois. The majority of ILGOP voters said that’s exactly what we want.

To the ad itself, I give it a B. It could be better, but like most of JB’s spend it will necessitate further explanations by Bailey. And those usually don’t go well if they happen at all.

Comment by Pundent Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:39 pm

  35. ===the many low information voters who have no idea===

I guess they missed this ad https://capitolfax.com/2022/05/13/new-irvin-tv-ad-calls-bailey-pritzkers-favorite-tax-raising-republican-campaign-claims-dga-is-doubling-ad-buy-this-week/

    And this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9YYLdLbWOE

There were others, but they’ve been taken off YouTube by Irvin’s campaign.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 4:46 pm

  36. A + Bailey leads one to believe he comes from middle class family. The truth is he has never wanted or needed anything in life. They have millions on their own. They chose to use your money.

Comment by Save Illinois Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 5:17 pm

  37. LOL at everyone thinking JB is responsible for Beetle’s primary win. Worth another LOL

Comment by danray Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 6:47 pm

  38. Solid B+. Would have been better with audio of Bailey’s handouts…that’s socialism, friends’ quote but guessing we’ll be seeing that after Labor Day. Not bad for an opening shot on Bailey’s government subsidies.

Comment by SIUEalum Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 6:53 pm

  39. Solid A. i can’t believe this ad took so long to show up. Hits bailey right where it hurts, totally accurate and indisputable.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 8:11 pm

  40. I’ll give it a gentlemen’s C. It has potential but doesn’t really hit home. As others have said, it really needs Bailey on screen complaining about handouts and then presenting the receipts.

Comment by David Agnew Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 8:39 pm

  41. It’s a C….

It’s not bad but I would argue it won’t change a single voters mind. Instead it just keeps the same narrative ongoing which I guess helps out JB.

Comment by The Dude Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 5:43 am

  42. C+. Only breaks the ice on the farm subsidy monies banked by the Bailey ‘family’ and related enterprises. But I get it, the rest are not directly running for Governor. Needs work.

Comment by XonXoff Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 8:20 am

  43. =Instead it just keeps the same narrative ongoing which I guess helps out JB.=

And others down ballot. You think Dan Brady or Tom Demmer are happy about having Bailey in the race? This is just as much about defining the party as it is Darren Bailey.

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 8:29 am

  44. I give the ad a solid A+ because it packs a punch in a tight 30 seconds.
I give all the campaign advisors here a C. ;)

Comment by Curious citizen Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 8:32 am

  45. B+ …Oh the pesky irony … that will resonate.

Comment by NorthsideNoMore Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 9:02 am

  46. A Great ad, it highlights Bailey/Republican hypocrisy over subsidies. Lots of subsidies for me and my family, none for all of you Democratic slackers out there. Bailey not thanking taxpayers puts over the top.
