  1. A month ago it’d get a solid B+.

Gas prices have been dropping for 22 days now.

Comment by huh? Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:23 am

  2. Weak sauce. Gas prices have been going down for weeks now.

And I see Illinois getting a lot worse under Darren Bailey.

  3. A
Simple but Effective and the double taxation is ridiculous.

Comment by Lurker Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:32 am

  4. D - ” over in Illinois ” outsider comment is a poor start - triggers a why watch the rest reaction

Comment by Red Ketcher Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:33 am

  5. That gas prices are high all over the country doesn’t factor into knee-jerk ads like this.

If any governor in the U.S. could affect inflation (including Republican governors), they’d have a right to say, “Why can’t we be like them?”

To the IGOP base, a B+. To thinking folks, D-.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:33 am

  6. Solid B. This reminds me of Frank Costanza’s airing of grievances. Should we blame JB for McDonald’s raising the cost of a large Diet Coke?

Comment by Jocko Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:38 am

  7. It’s a C+

It seems to be designed to keep the angry… angry, and those angry folks talking about why they are angry.

    As a placeholder, a C+

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:38 am

  8. F—- Doesnt make clear that Pritzker is responsible for the increase

Comment by low level Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:38 am

  9. Thought it would be about crime, seeing who its from, but that issue is not at the very top of voters’ concerns, like inflation and economy. As to the ad, kind of weak, rated C. The ad itself says Pritzker is offering gas tax relief. That’s not a good thing, inflation relief? Confusing.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:47 am

  10. B.
Try’s to cover a lot of ground in 30 seconds, but does ok with the material.
Shows a diverse group of speakers who just lay out certain facts which is a change from the angry white guy approach i thought may be coming.
The JBP comment is classic Pritzker.

Comment by Back to the Futue Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:47 am

  11. I hope Josh likes being the spokesman for Bailey and IPI. For my part, I will not be shopping at gas stations with the politically charged IPI sticker. There was never a need for the Josh and his members to act like victims.

Comment by Medvale School for the Gifted Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:48 am

  12. -D - ” over in Illinois ” outsider comment is a poor start - triggers a why watch the rest reaction-

Yeah, I found that a really strange way to start the ad as well. Maybe the guy is from here and filling up elsewhere, but they don’t say that.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:50 am

  13. D+. I disagree that it’s simple, it’s actually a very complex ad. Defensive about the gas tax holiday, detours into the minor sign controversy, and as others have said, gas prices are getting better.

Also detract points for “how much longer will you play the fool?” It’s an honest look at how Proft sees voters, but I wouldn’t call that kind of insult effective.

Comment by vern Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:51 am

  14. Amazingly Proft’s stuff seems to be improving since the move to FL. That said the spot is about a month late. The other reality that even if you think JB has become unaffordable you still have Dare-in’and the filthy pig. So no net gain of support

Comment by Annonin' Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:51 am

  15. A solid B. It is an opening Salvo, drawing attention to the governor’s constant desire to raise taxes. I presume we will be getting a lot more reminders about the tax burden in “low tax” Illinois from now through November, and more reminders that Mr. Pritzker doesn’t really care about that

    Comment by JB13 Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:54 am

  16. D-. Gas prices have been dropping for weeks and gas is still expensive in any state you live in. Do they want people to move out of Illinois, that’s the vibe I get from this ad?

Also, right after the line “how much longer will you play the fool” and then Josh appears. This bunch is playing Josh for the fool by his association with them. Josh is a decent guy, it’s hard to watch him being played by IPI folks and Bailey-Trumpers. Ugh.

Comment by Baloneymous Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 10:56 am

  17. If “gas is high” becomes the rallying cry for Proft/Bailey and crew, then gas drops below $4 at any point between now and November, seems like a pretty big *bet* to define your messaging on gas prices, which can go up and down pretty quickly.

    Comment by CubsFan16 Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:04 am

  18. B for them. great response ad can come…how much worse….for women, voting, guns. the ad just writes itself.

Comment by Amalia Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:05 am

  19. Hosted by Epik. That’s fitting.

  20. =governor’s constant desire to raise taxes.=

Except for the part where he paused the increase in the gas tax and grocery tax.

Comment by Cool Papa Bell Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:05 am

  21. B. Gas prices have decreased, but they’re still high compared to recent years. Anybody with a truck, anyone who commutes to work via vehicle, or has gone on a road trip is still feeling the pain related to gas prices.

Comment by Peter Griffin Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:06 am

  22. Ads about gas prices were probably more effective 20-30 years ago. I have facebook, I see people in California and Wyoming and Texas post complaints about gas prices with photos of the price signs literally every day. In a way people DIDN’T know 20 years ago, people absolutely know gas prices are high everywhere, there’s no “elsewhere” where they’ve stayed low.

Comment by Suburban Mom Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:06 am

  23. huh? @ 10:23 am get your own handle. This one is mine since blago was in office.

Mr. Miller - is there something that can be done about people poaching handles? The other day Demoralized was complaining about their handle being poached.

Comment by Huh? Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:12 am

  24. C. It’s ok, but I don’t think “how much longer will you play the fool” is an effective message.

    This…

=== “how much longer will you play the fool” is an effective message.===

Reminds me of “wake up” as a catchphrase.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:27 am

  26. It’s OK. Gas prices is a good issue, but switching between narration, news clips, and chyrons muddles the message.

== “how much longer will you play the fool” is an effective message.==

I strongly disagree with this. Telling voters that they’ve been dumb rarely helps.

Comment by Jibba Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:41 am

  29. Jocko’s question premise is rejected. McDs has not raised the price of a large soft drink. It’s been $1 since 2017-18.

Comment by Heat of Summer Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:53 am

  30. Rate C.
Single issue on gas prices. Thankfully, Candidate Bailey’s voice and face are missing from the spot.

  31. ===McDs has not raised the price of a large soft drink. It’s been $1 since 2017-18.===

    Franchises are independently owned.

Both locations I “visit” in Oswegoland have indeed raised soft drink prices, one to $1.29

I asked one location, why the change, and that was the answer.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 11:57 am

    Huh.
    Darren Bailey worse ?

    Comment by sal-says Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 12:35 pm

  34. Gents C. Gas is expensive everywhere and it isn’t because of JB. Unless he runs the oil industry.

It is more anger stoking for those who need to be angry aka, the ilgop.

=The JBP comment is classic Pritzker.=

The comment is also true, taxes can change the ilgop and ayatollah bailey just are not honest. Bailey as a school board member sure liked raising taxes.

  35. The Gas tax is less expensive in 48 states that somehow are able to have better roads and bridges than we have in Illinois

Comment by Lucky Pierre Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 12:39 pm

  36. === The Gas tax is less expensive in 48 states that somehow are able to have better roads and bridges than we have in Illinois===

    According to…

===In ranking the Best States for infrastructure, use of renewable energy and the quality of roads and bridges were major considerations. While the U.S. is among the top nations for education, entrepreneurship and quality of life, it lags behind in infrastructure, earning a C- in the American Society of Civil Engineers 2021 Infrastructure Report Card.===

    Illinois?

    Overall rank? 26th

    ENERGY: 20
    INTERNET ACCESS: 24
    TRANSPORTATION: 31

A 26th overall by actual engineers, and 31st before implementing any of the infrastructure upgrades…

Also, when was the last time you - Lucky Pierre - gave a statistical observation that rated Illinois “good”?

I can’t think of an instance.

If you can, lemme know where to begin such a search for your “half full” statistic.

You bash our state so much why do you even want to live here? If I had the opinions about Illinois that you’ve held for so many years, I would have left a long time ago. Sometimes I think you’re a planted troll just to generate more comments.

It’s the difference of saying vs showing as Wittgenstein and many ad executives would say.

Comment by Three Dimensional Checkers Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 1:19 pm

  41. I paid a buck per gallon less for premium at a suburban Chicago Costco than I did a month ago. I’m obviously not alone. Anyone with any knowledge knows the tax went up 19 cents. 19. On a five or six dollar gallon of gas. Now that prices are going down, I expect this issue to have far less intensity.

This ad reminds me of the Irvin “everything is about crime” strategy. It just doesn’t hit the bullseye the way they need.

The ad is a D. Not bad for the uninformed but not hugely impactful as most people don’t blame JB for high gas prices.

  45. ===37 states have better roads than Illinois===

You literally said 48 states had better roads than Illinois and it was 100% due to our gas taxes. Then you took some time to do some research and proved yourself wrong. Well done. And I’ve driven on roads and highways in Kentucky, they have crappy roads their too even though your stats say 92%.

Comment by Baloneymous Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 2:21 pm

  46. =The Gas tax is less expensive in 48 states that somehow are able to have better roads and bridges than we have in Illinois=

Even if the tax part is true, Illinois does not have worse roads than 48 states. Missouri, Michigan, and Iowa barely have paved roads.

You do not get out much apparently.

  48. ===37 states have better roads than Illinois===

So, you can’t say anything good about Illinois?

You think infrastructure was better under Rauner?

Illinois had no budget for two years… you defended that. Daily.

Rauner, Proft, Griffin, now even the sneaky Kass… they all left Illinois.

Who exactly are you advocating for, since all your heroes have left?

I dunno, when Illinois is ranked 31st by actual civil engineers last year, before infrastructure upgrades…

Your Stockholm Syndrome is now as farcical as the meaning of your identity here, LOL

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 2:36 pm

  49. ===Illinois is third in the nation for===

No kidding. Hence the reason for that massive capital bill with resulting tax hikes.

You think all this magically gets fixed in a couple of years? What kind of doofuses do you take us for here?

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 2:38 pm

  50. ===There are two parts to the equation

Illinois is third in the nation for structurally deficient bridges===

LP, we had no capital bill under Rauner and you 100% backed his destruction of this state for his own personal vendettas. And now you’re complaining about bad bridges?

Also, you do realize it’s not just “Illinois bridges”, like the ones going to and from Missouri, Kentucky or Iowa. If those bridges are horrible, Iowa and Missouri and Kentucky are also responsible for them. So why don’t you blame Missouri, Iowa and Kentucky for their horrible bridges?

Comment by Baloneymous Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 2:42 pm

  51. Jocko, Thanks for the sauce, glad I wasn’t charged extra and your premise is accepted where the price has increased.

Comment by Heat of Summer Friday, Jul 15, 22 @ 3:05 pm

  52. Rich - Thought “doofus” might come from Latin, so the response to LP should be “What kind of doofi…” but apparently it from the Scots “dolt”, so, never mind.

    Vote with your feet.

You literally can NOT complain about taxes… and spending… since you cheered ZERO spending… cheering Illinois not having a budget.

You’re an utter phony, maybe a fool by staying in Illinois, foolish for your own mental health as you can’t see a single thing good about this state and continually be obsessed with finding negative things.

None of what I wrote is snark.

However, if you’re just a gag, a phony that uses bot talking points, between us, don’t tell anyone, I won’t, lemme in on the gag.

It’s truly amazing how one can opine how they despise where they live and refuse to seek utopia elsewhere.

You should be able, and ably…

Find a better paying job, with lower taxes, better schools, better roads, less crime, lower property taxes, a bigger house, better health care,…

… and with all that better… you should be able to convince or help other family members move too, with all the good you’ll find.

Years snd years… all your heroes left already..,

Your last comment brought this response. You’re not a victim, I’m responding to your gripe(s)
