A Daily Herald survey of 20 municipalities, including Chicago, showed 13 grew and seven lost population between 2010 and 2020, according to census data.
The highest loss was in Aurora, where the population decreased by 17,357, or 8.8%, over the decade to 180,542 as of 2020.
Other suburbs where population declined were Geneva and Palatine by less than 1%, Algonquin by 1.2%, Hanover Park by 1.3%, Addison by 3.4% and West Chicago by 5.4%.
Aurora leaders including Mayor Richard Irvin, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, were skeptical of initial results and will seek a special census in 2023.
Census data determines how about $1.5 trillion in federal money is distributed to states over the next decade.
“The city of Aurora has long believed the reflection in our 2020 census count was due to an undercount in the official process and not because of nearly tens of thousands of residents leaving Aurora over the last decade,” spokesman Clayton Muhammad said.
“We remain hopeful that things can be rectified through the official process, especially with the most recent news of this issue being statewide.”

The hellhole gained population and Aurora lost?
Is this the message they want out the day before the Primary closes? Or do they just not care anymore?

Two thoughts:
1) Like SDW said, it does throw shade on Irvin’s Aurora is nirvana ad narrative.
2) Da mayor can get back to working on his current job.

Pretty sure JB has been saying this for weeks and the right wingers have been doing everything they can to debunk his message. Pretty sure this guy’s campaign is still parroting the people leaving IL narrative.

Wait, so if Illinois is poorly run by Dems for allegedly (and falsely) losing population, how come we haven’t heard any gripes about Irvin for being bad for allegedly losing significangly more population proportionally?

Interviewer: Aurora decreased by 17,357 in 10 years. Does that mean its popularity is waning?
Irvin: Oh no, no, no, no. Its appeal is, uh, becoming more selective.

1. Irvin is accusing the Trump administration.
2. The alleged undercount involves Latinos.
3. NE Illinois, including Aurora, lost more than 150K undocumented immigrants from 2010-2020.
3. What is the IPI’s take on the fact that the only demographic demonstrably “fleeing” Illinois is undocumented immigrants?
