Republican US Senate candidate Hubbard compared 1/6/21 insurrection to “a party at Showbiz Pizza,” but also warned of “civil war”

Posted in:

* Peggy Hubbard wouldn’t talk to Dave McKinney, so he did some digging

One of the apparent frontrunners in the Republican U.S. Senate primary in Illinois was part of the protests at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and has characterized the fatal insurrection as “a party at Showbiz Pizza.”

Just days ahead of the Capitol riot, Peggy Hubbard told her Facebook followers that she intended to board a Washington, D.C.-bound bus with “my fellow Illinoisans/Patriots” to take “the fight for our Constitution directly to the establishment” — or, “the swamp,” as she called it — and to “stir things up!”

Now, Hubbard, who has indicated she does not regard President Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election, is tied or leading in polls heading into the June 28 primary election. The winner of the seven-way race will go on to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth this fall. […]

But in front of supporters, Hubbard has minimized what happened while stumping on the campaign trail, telling an audience at a Back the Blue rally in downstate Bloomington last August: “I was there Jan. 6th. It was like a party at Showbiz Pizza. I’m telling you the truth. It wasn’t what everybody thinks it was.”

Hubbard said she was kicked off Facebook for a period of time following the insurrection.

“They took me down off of Facebook. I had 567,000 followers. I told the truth. Facebook shut me down within eight hours,” she said at that August law-enforcement rally in Bloomington. […]

On the night of the insurrection, at 7:52 p.m., Hubbard posted that “what I witnessed today, is the warning shots of a civil war in the making.”

  2. When you are actively engaged in the location of an insurrection and warn of a Civil War, you can’t be a serious person to an oath one must make to the constitution.

Like Rich had as a QOTD

“* What is your own, personal top 2022 campaign issue? Explain.”

    Saving democracy is mine.

Wholly unacceptable candidate if nominated. No brainer. No vote. No way.

  3. The Democrats see these fools Bailey, Devore, and Hubbard and their mouths just water. Guaranteed Democrat victories up and down the ticket come Nov. 8.

Assuming she thinks her 567K followers are dumb.

  7. Surprised that whack jobs being whack jobs is still news…Seems like the “news” GOPies acting like civilized humans. Wait til some of them win

  8. This is what the ILGOP is, no matter how much Durkin would prefer otherwise. The ILGOP in some respects put up a fight a bit longer than some of the other state GOP parties, but the national party happily going along with riding the tiger they can no longer control means that even if the ILGOP wanted to keep the Eastern Bloc folks in check, they just… can’t.

  9. She needs to update here reference, as Showbiz Pizza went out of business in 1992, and locations that remained open were re-named Chuck E. Cheese.

  11. Attended an event earlier this year at which Ms. Hubbard spoke and she said it was the “B-team” at the January 6 riot “and next time we are bringing the A-team”.

I don’t think she was referring to B.A. Baracus helping with her next insurrection.

  14. Showbiz ceased operations in *1992*.

Why are they all so intent to stay stuck in a past that no longer exists?

    But more specifically to something mentioned in a comment above;

“even if the ILGOP wanted to keep the Eastern Bloc folks in check”

And that’s just the name of the house crazy caucus. What has been happening out in the open at the republican county and township organizational level puts the Eastern Bloc to shame. Be glad you don’t see much news about those things - a kind of silver lining of the abysmal state of local news coverage.

The foundation of the ILGOP house crumbled in 2021.

  17. It’s scary how many Republicans talk about Jan 6th like they are reciting the narcissists prayer

    That didn’t happen.
And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.
And if it was, that’s not a big deal.
And if it is, that’s not my fault.
And if it was, I didn’t mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.

  21. The GOP legitimized authoritarianism and violence when it acquitted the former president for the insurrection, which the ILGOP strongly supported. Trumpism has a real and strong voice in American politics, thanks to Republican politicians. Check out the former’s daily statements and see a demented and dangerous autocrat, untethered to reality, still pushing the Big Lie.

  24. I could just laugh her off as nutty. but the talk of civil war makes me nervous and with the Thomas written Supreme Court gun decision today, those folks are emboldened. Remember, there were weapons caches found near the USCapitol and we’ve still not found the person who placed the bombs near the RNC and the DNC. Dangerous talk is dangerous.

  25. While insurrectionist nutbars need to be called out by all democracy-loving Americans, it’s hard to want to help the GOP put down their extreme wing when they’ve been riding it to power effectively for a while now. Also, the mainstream GOP has been doing an excellent job of harming democracy all by itself for the last 30 years in their power-grabbing culture war, so I don’t see a lot of practical difference between the extremes of the GOP. Helping them now might allow continued success rather than the split or infighting that might lead to reform.

  32. That article is really something. This candidate is really something. Peggy Hubbard is demonstrating that just spooning out the same rhetoric is all someone needs to do to get through the threshold to be accepted. It’s a mad and seditious litmus test and the Justice Department needs to really get the ball rolling on some high profile charges, arrests, and denial of bail so that it is a little less appealing for the Peggy Hubbards of the world to be a Peggy Hubbard.

I am also taken aback by the reference to Showbiz Pizza which hasn’t been a thing for 30 years, but I bet Chuck E Cheese is very excited that Peggy is just a bit out of touch with what the kids are up to these days.
