VoteVets is out with a $430,000 new ad accusing Delia Ramirez of wanting to defund the police. It’s a reference to a letter she signed on to two years ago calling on Chicago to “defund the Chicago Police Department.” VoteVets supports Gil Villegas in the IL-03 Democratic primary.

Vote Vets has a pretty good track record of winning races. Good Ad. The issue in the 3rd district is: do the more conservative voters on the western side out vote the east side?

With crime being a top issue in Chicago, if this ad moves the needle look for repeat performances in similar (law enforcement v. progressive) races in the Mayor’s race and Aldermanic races. not sure how this ad works with suburban Democratic voters who are less focused on crime.

Or, are Dems on the west of the side district actually conservative? I wouldn’t assume that suburban Dem primary voters are conservative.

Rep. Ramirez seems like a fine person, but she is a defunder and maybe even a police abolitionist, so I don’t want to vote for her. I consider myself pretty progressive, but the defunder/abolitionist crowd is dangerous.

Really interesting line of attack in a Dem primary. Crime hasn’t moved the needle much on the GOP side. If it does on the Dem side we’re really in bizzaro world.
But we saw polling earlier this year showing crime was by far the biggest concern of city voters. My question is do the Villegas folks have new polling data that shows primary voters in that district will reject Ramirez on her defund stance? One assumes they do or they wouldn’t run this ad.

Is it? It’s been brought up multiple times on this blog that polling shows voters don’t care about crime as much as folks assume, but is that different when we look at just Chicago?

A if it was an ad for a general election in a swing district. C for a Democratic primary in a district this progressive. It will move some undecideds but all of Ramirez’s endorsements and brand will get her across the finish line.

VoteVets is a legit and impactful group. And this is Delia’s record and there’s no way to spin it. And this district is not hardcore progressive bastion but nice spin. A.

It is a good ad. I genuinely believe that Villegas has a passion for community crime, police budget and policing in general. That being said, as a suburban voter in the new 3rd district, wouldn’t his passions be better served by running for Mayor? The mayor’s office would have a more direct hand in these things he clearly cares so much about than being a junior rep in the the likely minority party in the US House for the next several years.

True the district in a general election is solidly Democratic with a moderate electorate but the Democratic primary electorate may be the most progressive of all Illinois’ congressional districts. Sanders, AOC, and Medicare for All have plus 70% favorable rating. This ad may net Ramirez as many votes as it causes her to lose. Like I said great ad for the general election in a swing district but will be hardly effective in this particular primary. C

Somewhat misleading to imply that Ramirez’s statement was in reference to the current “crime wave” when it was written 2 and a half years ago.

I read the tweet. It doesn’t say that State Representative Ramirez would vote against State of Illinois funding going to the police. It was in reaction to a protest in which protesters were able to be mistreated (which I think any person with sympathy should agree with). She has voted for resources that the City of Chicago (for the Chicago Police Department) requested & the General Assembly agreed to & for funding of violence prevention initiatives. If the PAC enjoys lying to the public about Delia Ramirez, that says all we need to know.

Great ad and Gil is fantastic. The big question in who is going to turn out to vote? Early voting has been pretty slow in my neck of the woods.

The ad does some pretzel twisting on a statement made in regards to one specific incident 30 months ago. And crime is not the top issue on voters minds. Is it a fatal blow? Doubtful. Ramirez has built significant momentum and it will take a lot more than this to slow down her advance. Rated a B for magnitude of desperation by Villegas.
