  3. Recieve. Receive. And I know the “I before E except after C”. Correct way just doesn’t look right to me.

    Comment by Papa2008 Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:10 pm

  4. Remember. It somehow got shortened to “rember” in my head and has carried through from printing to cursive, manual typewriters to electric. It’s so nice to be able to make corrections without an eraser, or putting in a caret, or whiteout or correction tape. Even if we don’t all get to have jetpacks, it’s really nice to be living here in the future.

  5. Occurrence has plagued me since the 1964 episode “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” on The Twilight Zone. It was based on a short story by Ambrose Bierce and our sophomore English class read it. Our teacher also required us to watch it on TV so we could discuss it in class.

It bugs me and it is hard for me to stay mute about it.

  13. A new thing for me is always spelling constituents wrong. I keep typing without the second T.

If I see it spelled wrong, I can spot it but for some reason my lizard brain keeps skipping it when I type it.

    Comment by G'Kar Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:40 pm

  18. I won my local grade school spelling bee and advanced to the county competition. I made it to the final round and lost on the word assessor. Believe it or not I was so ashamed to spell A-S-S in front of an audience and on live radio that I spelled it ASESSOR. I lost, of course. I’ve had to spell that word a lot in my adult life and almost every time I do, I think of that day.

  27. Juxtaposing “there,” “their,” or “they’re” are my frequent errors when I’m quickly typing a Twitter of Facebook post.

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:52 pm

  28. ==I always spell ‘GRAY’, but isn’t ‘GREY’ also an acceptable spelling?==

That’s the American and British versions so both are correct. Same thing as color vs. colour. And there’s a bunch of other similar words in England there is an extra u between o and r.

Comment by Earnest Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:54 pm

  30. Search warrant has always been problematic. One word, two words, hyphenated?

Indictment is an even bigger problem. Seems like there should be a silent g in there. I mean the g seems to be in everything these days.

and then there’s conviction. Lotta problems. I just avoid at all costs.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:56 pm

    Comment by Anon221 Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:09 pm

  33. I ditto “Definitely”. Can never get that right. I am pretty much a terrible speller so I could have a long list. But I do try to make sure I write words correctly and I am one of those that actually love google correct except when I am trying to write like I talk.

Comment by Merle Webb’s Jump Shot Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:23 pm

  42. I have always been a poor speller. I think that caused me to have a good vocabulary because I would find an alternate word and it also made m have horrible handwriting. Always ask does spelling count on a test then I figured if teacher couldn’t make out all the letters in a word because my writing so bad maybe she would not see the misspellings

Comment by DuPage Saint Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:24 pm

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:25 pm

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:30 pm

  47. Over all.

When sports radio hosts are talking about when a particular player was drafted they will use words like “… was picked 12th over all …”

The only player picked “over all” was the number 1 draftees. Everyone else were picked afterwards.

    Drives me screaming nuts.

That’s how I spell, too. Sometimes I may not know how to spell a word correctly, but I can look at it and tell you if it’s wrong.

“Thoroughly” and “sleigh” are the words I went out of the spelling bee on in successive years. I neglected to ask for a sentence for sleigh, and spelled ’slay.’

Comment by Alex Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 7:31 pm

  62. Loose lose is a major irritant, almost as bad as c/w/sh/ould “of” instead of “‘ve.”

It would’ve been easier to write that without spell check.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 7:48 pm

  63. During Desert Storm my Father would address letters to me using Dessert Storm.

People I served with there when writing Saudi Arabia would write Saudia Arabia.
