With President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address calling for the nation to “fund the police” with better training and resources, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Best & Worst States to Be a Police Officer, as well as accompanying videos and expert commentary.

In order to determine the best states to pursue a career in law enforcement, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 30 key indicators of police-friendliness. The data set ranges from the median income for law-enforcement officers to police deaths per 1,000 officers to state and local police-protection expenses per capita.

  1. I think this is what always struck me about how useless the fund vs defund debate ultimately was.

It became almost totally divorced from whether or not the money we’re already spending is being used effectively.

  4. I guess that is why Champaign PD is down 25 officers and a private security firm from Chicago patrols downtown Champaign.

  5. I am surprised the people that complain about their property taxes being too high haven’t complained about this ad nauseam.

They’d rather not take a vaccine, and honestly the Champaign PD has been absolutely incompetent for the past decade, so it’s not a bad thing, but if they are hiring the same old status quo than it’s a problem. Hopefully new chief comes in and does better.

Also University of Illinois Police Department helps subsidize this staff shortage too.

But the private security firm is actually hilarious because liberals hate it because they think police should do their jobs and GOP thinks they are defunding the police. The contract seems reasonable, but downtown Champaign has a problem because there’s nothing else to do besides drink, so there’s going to be problems, especially after midnight.

  7. Friendly reminder that the American Police force, if classified this way, would be the third highest budgeted army in the world. Behind China and the US again for it’s actual military. We give them infinite money and they use it to buy tanks and minesweepers that they’ll never use. Funding is not the issue.

  9. A few years back now it became obvious to me why local police budgets and performance were divorced from reality.

The D.A.R.E. program was found to be so ineffectual and lacking of data to support its stated goal, that federal grant funds are prohibited from being spent on it now. In order for local departments to continue the program, it has to be funded 100 percent with local dollars - property taxes.

Very few departments dropped the program, with their reasoning being due to the lack of evidence that it worked, or the new costs associated with continuing it. Unfortunately, many departments did not drop it and the program continues on to this day - despite the lack of any evidence it is accomplishing its stated purpose, and even evidence it is actually counter productive to its purpose.

The 1033/LESO program also blew up police budgets, because while the items acquired were free(like mine-resistant personnel carriers), the continuing upkeep of those items was not free and never considered.

It’s a perfect microcosm of the decision making process on the finance side of most police departments.

Questioning what the police do is ‘unpatriotic’, and many of the police chiefs operate their budgets knowing that.

And for that money, what do we get in return…

Actually the City gave up every thing south of Green to UIPD in exchange for 800k.

But you knew that. Remind me again what there is to do after 0 dark 30 besides drink?

  11. I think funding the police would go down a little easier if it was not a question of fund or not but a question of continue maintaining military equipment that we hvae/haven’t used (insert cause of have used or even plausible reason for might use); or pay $xxx which goes straight to line officers and $yyy that goes straight toward administrative services; or spend $zzz for school progams including (a,b,c). In other words if it was broken down into what normal budgets look like. I mean, every police agengcy has a money guy, who plans out expenses, this stuff isn’t hidden.
