  4. As possible the only person in Illinois who has never seen any of the Star Wars movies, I just want wish everyone, Happy Cinco de Mayo Eve.

  5. May the Fourth is now officially public service recognition day in Illinois. It would seem that the Governor chose this auspicious day to recognition the servants of the Republic. Let’s hope future employee “food days” are Star Wars themed. A true gift for the employees of the state for years to come.

On a serious note, it is nice to see our Governor catch onto an official acknowledgement of Public Service Recognition Week which has been a thing since oh, before some of us were born.

  6. Welcome to almost exam week. Ah, the emails that show up this time of the semester.

=By not uploading the PowerPoints for tomorrow’s exam, many students (who missed lectures that the syllabus didn’t say were mandatory to attend) will fail the test and maybe even the whole class.=

    To wit, I replied, “True.”

    Another.

=I understand I should attend class but I also believe that these external sources like [your] PowerPoints and being able to use the assigned course textbook should be available.=

To wit, I replied, “The last time you came to class was on March 11th, before Spring Break. Since you have not been attending class, it is up to you to keep track of what you are missing.”

Teaching in Illinois is a joy not unlike elsewhere I have taught. Have a great day, everyone.

  17. oh I love all the Star Wars movies. but right now what I would love is the Star Wars Christmas special. I need a hearty laugh.

  18. Anybody who bemoans Disney de-canonizing the “Expanded Universe” but doesn’t like the prequel/sequel trilogies needs to evaluate some things.

For every Thrawn Trilogy in the Expanded Universe, there’s dozens upon dozens of stories that make Jar-Jar Binks seem delightfully novel with dialog that makes Hayden Christensen’s performance feel Shakespearian by comparison.

Also, for those of us who are Arrested Developmentarians, happy Cinco de Quatro!

  19. My first date was to see Star Wars. It was of course with a girl, in a world where the natural expectation was me growing up and marrying one. That I felt differently about my male best friend meant nothing–the closest thing to a gay role model was Billy Crystal’s epitome of negative gay stereotypes on Soap and horrible portrayals in movies, and a small town farm boy like me was nothing like that. There was no way to get information or connect with others. It was illegal to marry, no right to serve my country in the military and Ronald Reagan would soon demonize us for the AIDS epidemic and wait for hundreds of thousands of lives to be lost before even saying the word. I came out to a family who wanted me to be cured and still avoids the topic, marched in protests and faced down the hostility, had the depression when I got worn down. I made it through to a day when Illinois passed gay marriage and didn’t have to be forced to implement by the US Supreme Court, Most Illinois political officials celebrate Pride Month, the federal government granted the right of military service, and laws were put in place to help end deeply rooted discrimination in the workplace and public life. I can’t imagine how different I’d be to have grown up in this world of possibility, seeing role models in such great variety and having avenues to connect with support and other peers. Please excuse the soapbox and long post to moderate, Rich.

  24. === National Crab Day was March 9, so you’ve already had your turn. ===

I do love crab, but I prefer National Pizza Day on February 9th. Maybe there should be a National Crab Pizza day on February 23rd to split the difference, but then then the Banana Bread folks would feel slighted.
