  2. Nice to have you back, Rich.

I had the pleasure last week of going to hear Ray Long talk about his book about Madigan. Interesting stuff, and I’m looking forward to reading it

  3. Springfield radio changes today probably of interest to posters here.

After at least a quarter-century as a news/talk station for Springfield, WMAY 970’s talk programming will go FM-only on 92.7 (where it had simulcast already for at least a year) starting today.

970 will now be simulcasting the new “Lake” 60s, 70s, and 80s format on 102.5 (which is best heard around Chatham and southwest Springfield–and fitting around Lake Spfd).

Jim Leach and Co will be FM talkers only starting today:

  4. SJR does not have an official story yet, but early this morning I saw several Springfield-area Facebook friends posting that Mark Kessler of Recycled Records downtown (which is in the process of being sold) has passed away sometime over the weekend. Sad loss for downtown Springfield and the area, and for music lovers everywhere. Prayers and sympathies to his family, friends and customers over the years.

  5. Hope you had a restful, enjoyable time away.

You were missed, glad you’re back.

  6. I hope you had a good time off Rich.

I haven’t been using the CTA regularly, but I was on a Brown Line train last Wednesday and they were still playing the announcement about how masks were mandatory on all CTA vehicles. It was played a lot. The only people on my car without masks were a couple of white guys in their 20s, wearing Cubs hats and playing music over their phones, sans headphones.

  7. Rich goes away, the weather gets hot. Rich returns, freeze warning for tomorrow morning. Just saying.

  8. ===The only people on my car without masks were a couple of white guys…===

Same with my experience on this morning’s Brown Line commute. Nobody is required to wear masks anymore, but so far, most people still are. I’m a white guy, and I plan to wear one when I ride. Even before COVID, the CTA was a petri dish. Can’t believe masks haven’t been in use there for decades.

Same with hospitals and doctors’ offices, and even schools and other germ-infested places, also hard to believe they didn’t require masks in there decades ago as well. Not even pre-COVID during major flu outbreaks some winters (including early 2020 right before the pandemic started).

  11. Good morning. It is a good morning for Illinois, with our new credit upgrade. Not such a good morning for certain sports teams, one who has time to improve, the other on the brink of elimination.

  12. I was in a Texas airport right after the judge knocked out the mask mandate and as word spread, people were taking off their masks. You could see it ripple through the terminal crowd. I still wore mine, even though I have been vaxxed, boostered and naturally immunized (I got the virus on New Year’s)

Honestly the biggest long term impacts I’m hoping come from COVID will be the combination of people not going to work/school while actively sick, and/or wearing a mask when they have the sniffles.

The American culture of “I must endure every terrible thing and take pride in my bad decisions” needs to die.

  14. Great Suntimes article covering indicted teamsters Boss Coli and his threat against Cinespace. Brought down Dem State Senator Cullerton - but the real gem are the wiretaps between Coli and Cinespace Chicago president Alex Pissios, could be from a Hollywood script

  15. RIP Mark.

A real legend of Springfield and of downtown merchants. Recycled Records might have been the first store I ventured into when I moved to town.

I guess it was fitting - that Mark passes on Record Store Day weekend. Springfield will sound a little less cool moving forward.
