* Some folks received this text message last night…

* Sorry about the video quality

To build something that lasts, you start at the bottom. At age 10, Gary Rabine was delivering papers and dumpster-diving for cans on Chicago’s northwest suburbs. And on that foundation, he built paving businesses that have employed thousands.

Gary Rabine.

Gary knows firsthand that some problems aren’t just on the surface. That’s why Gary Rabine is ready to clear away the career politicians to pave the way for a stronger future.

Conservative. Businessman. Gary Rabine.

  3. ===Hey Patriot===

The lack of a comma here really bothers me since they use punctuation in the rest of the message. Almost as much as the extent to which this panders to the reader like bad video game dialog. The word patriot must have no meaning to whoever wrote this.

Comment by Candy Dogood Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 8:54 am

  4. That’s a good primary message. And it’s kind of ironic–a slick ad about how the answer isn’t just slick ads.

Comment by Torco Sign Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 8:54 am

  5. you had me at PATRIOT. Man, that word has really taken off in the past 18 months.

That’s why we need to pave over them, never to be seen again. /S

  7. Anyone that “dumpster dove” and calls me a “Patriot”

It has the feel of your “old timer neighbor” who’s continually fixing that lawn mower with “found” parts and invites you for some decent bourbon but tells how the “country has gone to…” as a price to partake.

    It’s… a thing I guess.

  11. It’s a C-, (rating)

If I was looking for someone to replace my driveway, dress up for a child’s birthday party as “Bob the Builder” or be my 5th “Village People” person for Halloween, this ad rocks…

    Even as a phone-y, text-y, bit… yikes.

  13. The name Rabine has been used to create 25 Corporation/LLC Names at the Illinois Secretary of States Office. Thirteen are still active so somebody has been busy.

Comment by Bigtwich Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:16 am

  14. Via his business, which presumably uses asphalt, inquiring minds want to know how many degrees of separation he is from Bill Cellini, former executive director of the Illinois Asphalt Pavers Association.

  15. Did he forgot to say he was running for Governor or was that just cut off at the end?

Comment by uialum Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:19 am

  16. Lotta potholes in the streets that I use. Maybe if Gary used better materials, and not build in planned obsolescence to keep on raking in profits, we’d have better roads. Thanks for reminding me of the potholes, Gary…F-

Comment by PublicServant Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:32 am

  17. “Maybe if Gary used better materials, and not build in planned obsolescence”

Uhm, those are dictated by IDOT. Contractors to IDOT, build what they are told.

Comment by Downstate Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:39 am

  18. I didn’t realize there were so many paving references you could fit in a 30 second ad.

Is he running for an office, or is he just advertising his paving business?

Comment by Steve Rogers Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:41 am

  19. “Contractors to IDOT”

Thanks for the reminder that w/o big gubmint, Gary Rabine may not have such a successful business.

    Comment by Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:44 am

  20. How’d Gary get those contracts? Any contributions we ought to be looking in to around the time he got on the government gravy train? Just wondering.

Comment by PublicServant Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:47 am

  21. C. Nothing special. The question is how many people will see it.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think I’ve seen any over the air ads for Rabine. I’ve seen plenty for Irvin and even Sullivan. Bailey seems to have a way of generating unpaid media and getting attention. But Rabine? He needs to get on the air and introduce himself, and quickly. No. One. Knows. You. Sending texts to fellow “Patriots” isn’t going to get it done.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:54 am

  22. C-
The voice sounds like it’s from the 70’s or 80’s, one of those recorded health hotlines.

It’s a good story. If Rabine has the money he should actually show it with a better campaign operation.

    “Hey Patriot”

People who look like me but act like us. The “Real America” platform of the GOP/RNC and Trump.

  24. Someone warn Bill Belichick he could also be cancelled by the speech police

Comment by Lucky Pierre Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 9:59 am

  25. Nice short introduction Ad.
Like some other folks the use of “Patriot” did throw me off.
Not sure this is a solid long term strategy when you have three candidates in the race that don’t have to use that word to highlight their public service. Of course, you don’t have to have served in government to be a “patriot”, but his approach is a bit unsettling.
Not saying Mr. Rabine is not a “patriot”, but he is running in a field that has a decorated war veteran in Mayor Irvin, Paul Schimpf, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who served as a military prosecutor as well as a Lt. Colonel in the Marines and Beverly Miles, who is a retired U.S. Army Major and a nurse at Hines.
On grading the Ad, I would give it a B- and suggest Mr. Rabine lighten up on the “patriot” buzzword game.

  26. —Is he running for an office, or is he just advertising his paving business?–

No way, couldn’t be. His campaign slogan is “Paving the Way”

he’s in this for the fight

Comment by Anthony Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 10:16 am

  27. Dear hubby received this last night. Asked me what he was running for, said “I don’t know what’s it say in the message”? At minimum shouldn’t you put the office you are seeking in the text? (facepalm).

Comment by Metro East Transplant Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 10:17 am

  28. Gary needs his name smeared all over his equipment for voters to see it’s construction season

Comment by Rabid Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 10:20 am

  29. “Reared on the mean streets of the NW side of Chicago”
Even better- from what I can find, he was born in Gurnee and went to Richmond-Burton.

Comment by Proud Papa Bear Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 10:22 am

  30. Michael Flynn endorsement has tainted Rabine for consideration for me. No ad is going to wash that stain off.

Comment by Nearly Normal Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 10:25 am

  31. ==Is he running for an office, or is he just advertising his paving business? ==

So much of Trump wing politics is just a grift…

    To the ad:

The production values feel dated, but maybe that’s just the video quality? Not mentioning the office is a big problem for an unknown candidate, too.

But the big question is if this is even on the air anywhere.

Comment by Arsenal Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 10:49 am

  32. C- on the ad.
== Gary Rabine is ready to clear away the career politicians == In both parties?

    Comment by anon2 Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 11:03 am

  33. I’d give the ad a C. There’s nothing that tells me why he’s running or how his background has enabled him to lead the state. It’s just a bunch of bad puns strung together in an attempt to be clever. Might be a better ad for his paving business than governor.

Rabine seems more interested in “beating the left” then actually becoming our next governor. There’s absolutely no evidence, or path, that shows that “owning the libs” is an effective statewide election strategy.

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 11:36 am

  34. Wow. Are they so hard up that they couldn’t afford voice over talent? But it’s so bad it reminds me of the old Victory Auto Wreckers ads…and not in a good way. As an ad for his paving business I’d give it a C. As an ad for governor, it gets a solid D-. Only didn’t give it an F because I have a feeling he’s going to need room to go down.

  35. Who is Cary Radine?

Comment by Ok Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 12:36 pm

  36. I rate it a W. As in Who is this and What is he running for?

Comment by Lurker Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 1:04 pm

  37. More nauseating phony bootstraps nonsense. He was born into a family paving business. The silver spoon apparently caused brain damage.

Comment by Excitable Boy Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 2:33 pm

  38. I see him and think Michael Flynn. It’s hard to watch any ad of his because of that. I’d give it a C. Nothing makes it above or below average.

Comment by Fayette County Thursday, Apr 14, 22 @ 3:11 pm

  39. “on Chicago’s northwest suburbs.”

    What? Where?

I listened, that is what the v/o actor says.
