Sen. Rezin announces reelection, so Sullivan is still looking for running mate

Posted in:

* As subscribers know, Republican gubernatorial candidate Jesse Sullivan has been trying to convince Sen. Sue Rezin to run as his lt. governor candidate. Rezin’s decision to run for reelection means that Sullivan still can’t pass petitions almost two weeks after the truncated circulation season has begun…

Today, State Senator Sue Rezin announced her campaign for re-election to the State Senate to continue to work with the families of the 38th District to fight for their needs at the Illinois statehouse.

“My team and I are focused on promoting legislation that will support law enforcement and mental health organizations, and will increase public safety and lower taxes in our neighborhoods and around the state,” Sen. Rezin said. “After speaking with countless constituents, business leaders, and elected officials in our district, I believe there is still more work to do together, and I am honored by the support of my campaign to continue to represent this amazing community.”

…Adding… I’m kinda pressed for time right now, so let’s make this into the Question of the Day: Who should Jesse Sullivan choose as his running mate? Explain.

  5. Good call by Senator Rezin. She’s a great legislator. Would have hated to see her career end as a Lt. Gov sidecar to a guy who’s going to get 4% in a Republican primary.

  8. He should select a female business leader. That way he can run an “outsider” campaign against those who have been in the system. Someone with the business chops and possibly some civic engagement background.

  10. I know he has a few bucks behind him, but it’s hard to see a clear path forward for Sullivan. He seems to now be positioned somewhere between Irvin and Bailey/Rabine. And that’s a narrow band of the GOP. And if he wasn’t compelling enough to draw Ken Griffin’s attention his backers might make note of that and set their sights elsewhere.

  39. ===Who should Jesse Sullivan choose as his running mate?===

Some nice young republican who has never held office and no one has ever heard of would be the most appropriate candidate for their Lt. Governor spot. I’m not sure how appealing it is for anyone that I would suggest might like to run for Lt. Governor to be on the ticket with someone who is a political novice. Why risk your own political capital, clout, reputation, or even just undeveloped potential by tying yourself to an unknown that was able to get a handful of people to throw what most people consider a life changing amount of money behind him.

  44. My serious answer is that he should find some right-libertarian twenty-something former frat bro with a decent sounding job in the Loop. A young lawyer, management consultant or future c-suite tenant whose politics and aesthetic come primarily from Barstool Sports. I have no idea if it would work, but Irvin is gonna wipe him out of the suburban moderate lane so he’s gotta get some votes somewhere. Might as well try to convince some inactive voters who are gonna make six figures their entire lives to start voting in Republican primaries.

That said, here’s my joke short list:
    Richard Boykin
    Jim Gardiner
    Neal Sales-Griffin
    Rickey Hendon
    Mark Shaw

Comment by Candy Dogood Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 4:59 pm

  48. Jesse Sullivan really is a great example of learning to walk before running. All these ads don’t matter one iota if you don’t have a running mate or if you don’t find one in enough time to gather enough signatures to get on the ballot. As to the question, his only path (narrow that it may be) would be to get a more conservative suburbanite who could potentially help him garner conservative and suburban votes. Who that is, who would also want the gig, I have no idea.

Are you talking about the Tom Shafer from Springfield who always calls in to local talk radio (e.g., Madonia’s show, most of the WMAY local shows)? And had longshot school board candidacies the last few years?
