And now for something completely different

* Is this really still a thing?

Bigfoot has apparently been spotted near what’s being called a “hot spot” for Sasquatch activity in Illinois.

A group called Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization reports a sighting on November 27, 2021 in Cass County. The expert spoke to the witness and calls it a ‘very reliable’ sighting. […]

The witness reported he saw a large animal jump into the road about 40 yards ahead of his vehicle. He says when the animal hit the road he could see very large legs spread wide with large swinging hair arms. He said it lept across the road in two jumps. […]

A YouTube Documentary called the “Sasquatch Theory” recently released a video about a possible sighting near the Mark Twain Forest in Missouri. This is quite some distance from central Illinois but some wondered if the two incidents could be related.

Some have wondered!

I suppose they could be promoting anti-vax propaganda instead. But that’s a pretty low bar.

…Adding… Oh my goodness, the Tribune did a story on this last month. A bit less credulous, though.

Maybe Bigfoot was lured by Right to Work, low taxes, and the beautiful Mark Twain wilderness?

I’ll wait for IPI, Kass, or Statehouse Chick to confirm… but…

“Chicago liberals are at it again. Ignoring the recent news about the threat we face from the Bigfoot. Cass County cannot continue to sit by and be dictated by the Governor that Bigfoot is not real, and that we are prohibited from using our freedoms to protect ourselves from this existential threat to our farms and our way of life.”

  21. Bigfoot in the Midwest? I didn’t think he/they left the Pacific Northwest for anything. Result of climate change, I suppose.

This has been a genuine passion for some people. I worked at UofC’s science library while a student, and a retired cryptozoologist would come in every now and then. People tended to whisper and point, which was all a bit sad since the cryptozoology overshadowed the legit science work he did over his career. His passion was heartfelt, however:

  30. Bigfoot sightings tend to increase in areas of declining social and economic progress. It’s often used as a tourist-generating activity in areas which can’t otherwise bring in outside money.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a local out in Roswell, NM a few decades ago(in the 90s). As a lifelong resident, he patiently told me how almost all the local businesses were involved in pumping up the alien story to ‘put the town on the map’. Even if there is a kernel of truth to the crash story, it has long since transformed into a marketing entity of its own. I had the impression is was an ‘open secret’ to those who have lived in the town for a long time. After all, the only reason I was there was to check out the UFO museum in town while on a road trip. He looked at me, waved his hands around gesturing at everything, and said the entire town only exists because of that story. Without that story, Roswell wouldn’t be any more remarkable than Clovis, New Mexico - most of the downtown of Roswell wouldn’t exist today.

The stories themselves usually reflect the local area, similar to the Mothman/aliens in WV, and the “Bridgewater Triangle” in MA. From an anthropologic perspective, these stories are interesting if for no other reason than for how they came to be.

  31. Let’s keep our mythical beast terminology straight. In Southern Illinois, there is no “bigfoot” only the Big Muddy Monster. Cass County is a bit far north for the BMM; so, I suppose “bigfoot” is OK to use.

  35. I often worked late and took the late shuttle from home during grad school and got to know the driver pretty well. He always listened to Coast to Coast when it came on. He’s a pretty centered guy so I asked him what he thinks about all of the weird claims on the show. He shrugged, “Sure, why not? It doesn’t hurt anything.” (all caveats about how that crosses over to conspiracy theories that are a problem)

We could invite Denver Riggleman to Illinois to search, but he’s busy with the investigation into the insurrection right now.

  38. About 4-5 years ago, someone put a human-sized black Bigfoot outline along Athens Blacktop between Athens and Petersburg and they used to occasionally move it from one spot to another for laughs. Now multiple people in the area have them in their yards. Are they starting a new tourist draw for Athens/Petersburg? It’s pretty darn close to Cass County.

  41. The people that put on a bigfoot costume should be very careful running across roads. Someone was hit by a car and killed, they misjudged the car speed or distance. Dangerous stunt.
