Republican who fundraised with Blagojevich says he’s running for Batinick’s seat

Posted in:

* I told you yesterday that Republicans have a decent shot at holding on to retiring Rep. Mark Batinick’s seat. That’ll depend on who wins the primary. This guy? Maybe not

One month after announcing plans to run against Meg Cappel in next year’s State Senate 49th District race, Tom McCullagh has switched gears.

McCullagh notified Joliet Patch’s editor on Wednesday that he now plans to run for the seat held by State Rep. Mark Batinick of Plainfield. An officeholder since 2014, Batinick announced that he will not seek re-election next year.

“I want to thank Mark Batinick for his almost eight years as a state rep providing great conservative leadership in the greater Plainfield area,” McCullagh remarked. “When looking at places to live, the Plainfield-Shorewood area stood out because Mark Batinick was the state rep. After hearing of his intent to not run again, I decided to run to fill the seat in the ‘22 cycle. I know I have a lot to live up to, but I intend to represent the people of the 97th district to the best of my ability.” […]

After learning of Batinick’s plans to retire, McCullagh had this to say: “I stand firmly behind advocating the removal of CRT and early age sex ed from our children’s curriculum, as well as being a strong advocate for parental rights and involvement with their children’s education. Mark is leaving big shoes to fill, but I am up to the task.”

* From last year when he ran for state Senate as an anti-corruption candidate…

To be clear: we have nothing to do with this event and we don't condone it. It's a bad idea. Republicans in Illinois are for cleaning up Democrat corruption that has plagued us for too long - not celebrating one of its most insidious characters. #twill https://t.co/sRjHFumhlz

* He also claimed Pritzker was planning to issue mitigation orders so he could get pension money from the feds

“I firmly believe he’s trying to show the worst impact of COVID that he can so he can get the federal bailout he wants to address all the state’s other problems, like pensions,” McCullagh told the Will County Gazette. “He’s trying to politicize the moment by using people’s suffering to get the bailout that he wants.”

McCullagh lost by about 12.5 points.

  2. A quick Google search revealed he was going to run against Senator Cappel again, despite a decisive loss last time. This dude seems like a dream candidate for Dem opposition.

  9. ===I stand firmly behind advocating the removal of CRT…===

It’s on the news media to report more than the garbage that comes out of the mouths of candidates. It’s called context and facts, and the fact is, critical race theory is not now nor has it ever been taught in K-12 schools in Illinois or anywhere else. Nor is teaching CRT being proposed in any K-12 school.

Facts matter. The news media is helping perpetuate this stuff by not calling bull$#*^ on it from the get-go.

Your larger point is spot on, but I would tell you that there are a few districts in this nation that are teaching CRT. Maybe not by name, but he philosophies and practices. The number is infinitesimally small, and in the big picture completely irrelevant. I don’t know of any in practice in Illinois.

But your overall point is totally founded and accurate.

  14. Can any politician claiming to want to remove CRT define exactly what it is and specifically name a K-12 school district in Illinois that has it as any part of their approved curriculum?

Comment by Maddog Thursday, Nov 4, 21 @ 4:34 pm

  17. To the idea that CRT isn’t taught in schools: 1) there are state education agencies/commissions and advocacy groups on the left that explicitly support - in writing - using the tenets of CRT in the classrooms. Use Google - it’s not that hard. 2) CRT as a legal theory is not something you “teach”. It’s a world view/framework/lens through which to look at all of our issues and you can bet the teachers coming out today’s universities that are steeped in CRT are teaching with that same lens in their classrooms. There is too many examples of this happening classrooms across America as reported on by parents for that not to be the obvious truth. Again, Google is your friend.

So it’s a higher ed problem? You probably forgot “today’s liberal universities”, amirite?

  20. Stop calling it CRT. Just say you don’t want to teach children that racism exists in American society. That seems to be what you’re trying to say. Just say it.

That’s exactly what they are saying. If race is discussed at all they immediately yell “CRT.” I would bet you 99.9% of the people using the term have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. What they want is for race to be swept under the rug and for teachers to only teach that that everything is fine and dandy. The level of ignorance here amazes me.

  23. Hahaha- telling everyone to use google to verify the facts you claim to have pretty much backs up my previous statement - people are dumb. Saying you know and not providing specifics is a campaign ploy. Just like this candidate is doing.
But more importantly white people learning about black people is also a problem for you. Congrats on your screen name- Hahaha shows us all your level of compassion and use of intelligence in arguments.

  25. He swaps offices he is running for just when Batinick announces his retirement.

Going from wanting to run for a state senate seat, then shifting to wanting to run for a house seat, seems like a step backwards.

…Unless Batinick wants to run for that senate seat.

Comment by TheInvisibleMan Thursday, Nov 4, 21 @ 7:28 pm

  26. I have a ton of respect for Rep. Batinick but I am hoping to see a blue pickup in this district. Especially with this joker angling for the seat
